Dorotha J. Johnson
CONNEAUT - Dorotha J. Johnson, 86, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Inn-Conneaut Health Center.
She was born Nov. 4, 1915, to William and Rose (Schlaich) Stillwell, in Conneaut.
Mrs. Johnson was a 1933 graduate of Conneaut High School. She lived in Colorado Springs, Colo. from 1979 to 1995, when she returned to Conneaut.
She was affiliated with First United Methodist Church at one time and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. She was a gifted seamstress and enjoyed sewing and cooking.
Survivors include daughters Colleen Bruntz of Golden, Colo. and Denise Johnson of Conneaut; sons James of Ashtabula, Robert of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Ron of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and grandsons Steve Williams of Conneaut and Nate and Jack Johnson of Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband L. Nathan Johnson in 1973, and brothers Robert and William.
Family services are this afternoon at Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, officiated by the Rev. David Harding of First United Methodist Church. Burial in City Cemetery will follow.
Memorial contributions may be made to the activity fund of Inn-Conneaut Health Center. Envelopes available at the funeral home.
Christopher M. Peters
ROME - Christopher M. Peters, 27, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in a car crash in New Lyme Township.
He was born April 4, 1974, to Mary Ann (Schneider) Peters in Parma. He was a lifelong Hartsgrove and Ashtabula County resident.
Mr. Peters graduated from Grand Valley High School in 1992. He attended Kent State University, Trumbull campus.
He was employed in the computer field.
Mr. Peters played on the Kennametal softball team. In high school, he played football and basketball. He enjoyed his daughter, sports, computers, carpentry, hunting, fishing, working on cars and music.
Survivors include his mother; daughter Courtney M. Peters of Bristolville; sisters Terry A. Miller of Roaming Shores, and Sharon L. Gruskiewicz of Wayne; and brother David M. Peters of Orwell.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Church, 103 N. Maple St., Orwell, officiated by the Rev. Gregory F, Fedor. Visitation is 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesday.
Burial is at St. Mary Cemetery, Orwell.
Patricia C. Messent
KINGSVILLE - Patricia C. Messent, 78, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 28, 1922 in Ashtabula, the daughter of Emil and Florence (Andrews) Cederquist.
Mrs. Messent has been a lifelong Ashtabula County resident.
She earned her bachelor's degree from Bethany College, W.Va., where she was homecoming queen.
She married William F. Messent on Nov. 11, 1948.
Mrs. Messent was a homemaker most of her life and worked briefly for Goodwill Industries.
She was a member of the Reader's Club and the Antique Club. She golfed on various area women's golf leagues.
Survivors include one son, Michael Messent of Ashtabula; two daughters, Maryann Carpenter of Pierpont and Melinda Messent of Ashtabula; four grandchildren, Jenifer Carpenter, David Carpenter, Michael Messent, Jr, and William Messent; and one sister, Marylou Winchester of Bradenton, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, William on Jan. 10, 1972.
A private family service will be at St. Joseph Cemetery Chapel.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
No calling hours will be observed.

Bernie L. Hoskins Jr.
BOSTON, Va. – Bernie Lawrence Hoskins Jr., 85, a former resident of Ashtabula, died Thursday, May 17, 2001.
He was born July 15, 1915, in Geneva, the son of Dottie (Sovelia) Nichols and Bernie Lawrence Hoskins Sr.
Mr. Hoskins and his wife, Alice, retired to Yuma, Ariz., in 1979.
He was a graduate of Geneva High School and later attended Case Western Reserve, Kent State and received an associate degree in engineering from the University of Michigan. He retired from Reliance Electric Co. as an engineering manager and quality assurance manager. He also helped establish the Reliance Credit Union. He was a veteran of the United States Army being stationed in the Philippines during World War II.
Mr. Hoskins was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Scottish Rite – Rising Sun Lodge, Al Koran Shrine, Grotto Hall, Reliance Retirees and Ashtabula Rotary Club.
He enjoyed people, golf, traveling and carpentry.
Survivors include a daughter, Amy Jo “Amo” Merritt of Boston; a granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Merritt of Boston; two sisters, Nettie Eileen “Nan” Wood and Louise “Bettie” McCoy; and a brother, Richard Lee, all of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 58 years, Alice E. Field.
Memorial service and burial at Edgewood Cemetery will be at a later date.

Lawrence A. Papotta
CONNEAUT - Lawrence A. “Joe” Papotta, 61, of Harbor St., died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, of a probable coronary.
Born Sept. 8, 1939, in Cleveland, he was a son of Maurice and Ella Papotta and had been a Conneaut resident for the past five years.
Mr. Papotta worked as a machinist for Lamotype Corp., Cleveland, for many years.
He enjoyed his family, the outdoors and oldies music.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Lockwood of Conneaut; a son, Joseph of Conneaut; six grandchildren; and three sisters, Marie Gordon of Chester Township; Betty Dolan of Cleveland Heights; and Pauline Krznarich of Brooklyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Louis.
No funeral will be observed.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Marcy Funeral Home, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut.

Arvo J. Palo
CONNEAUT - Arvo J. Palo, 98, formerly of Day Street, Conneaut, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at the Inn-Conneaut Health Center.
Born in Perry, OH, on March 15, 1905, he was the son of Johanes and Sigrid (Aysto) Palo, and had resided in Conneaut most of his life.
Mr. Palo owned and operated Palo's Grocery Store on Day Street for over 30 years, and retired as Conneaut's Health Commissioner after 20 years of service.
In his earlier years, he also sailed on the Bessemer II Car Ferry. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Mr. Palo was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a charter member of the Conneaut Fish and Game Club. He enjoyed raising and training German ShortHaired Pointers, and was an excellent craftsman, specializing in custom gunstocks.
He is survived by a brother, Edward and his wife Marjorie Palo of Conneaut; a god-daughter, Linda Mulholland of Tampa, FL; nephews, Maurice (Skip) Palo of Mission Viejo, CA, John and wife Carolyn Palo of Conneaut, and Paul Palo of Venice, CA; and nieces, Susan Ensign of Cortland, OH, and Julie Cohen of Cleveland.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; a brother, Maurice Palo; and two sisters, Juliann Thomas, and Lillian Guy.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main Street, Conneaut, with the Rev. Frederick Grimm, Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Jefferson, officiating. At his request there will be no calling hours. Following cremation, internment will be made in St. Joseph Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorials be made in his name to the Conneaut Fish and Game Club. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
