Albert Waters
PFAFFTOWN, N.C. Albert Waters, 74, of Pfafftown, N.C., died suddenly on Sunday, April 6, 2003.
Born and raised in Andover, Ohio, he was the son of Sullivan Charles and Francis Mochell Waters. He graduated from Andover High School in 1946 and was a member of the National Honor Society and the 4-H clubs.
In June of 1946, he enlisted in the United States Army, and rose in ranks to Chief Warrant Officer 4. His first 8 years in the army were spent in Europe, where he met and married Grete Thorslund from Aarhus, Denmark in 1952. He continued his education at the United States Army Air Defense School at Fort Bliss, Texas and became a Nike & Hawk Missile Maintenance Officer.
His last assignment was as a Logistics Analyst for the Sentinel and Safeguard System. He retired from the United States Army in 1971, and shortly here after joined AT&T as a Technical Writer. In 1990, he retired from AT&T. Mr. Waters spent his 13 years of full retirement traveling in the United States.
He left behind his loving wife of 50 years, Grete Waters; two sons, Gary Waters, of Cincinnati; and Eric Water of Cary, N.C.; two granddaughters, Erica and Dana Waters of Cincinnati; and one sister, Beverly Mead of Andover.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Internment with military honors will be held privately at a Military Cemetery at a later date.
Margaret D. Hartman
CONNEAUT - Margaret D. "Nani" Hartman, 88, of Madison Street, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at UHHS-Brown Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 12, 1914, in Conneaut, she was the daughter of William and Olive (Harrington) Brabender. She had been a Conneaut resident for most of her life.
Mrs. Hartman was employed by the former Goldette and retired from the Astatic Corp. as an assembler in 1967.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and DAV Auxiliary. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing cards, reading and being with her family.
Survivors include her husband, David, whom she married in 1967; two daughters, Melody Morris and Laurine Pataky, both of Conneaut; a son, Rex Oleson of Homestead, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edith Dombrowski of Erie, Pa., and Charlotte Andes of New Albany, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Laurie Oleson; a daughter, Cheri Makepeace; two sisters, Isabel Engleke and Willow Giddings; and three brothers, Frank, William Jr. and Harold Brabender.
Service is 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Greenlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum, with the Rev. Craig McKinley of First Assembly of God officiating. Burial will follow.
Per Mrs. Hartman's request, no calling hours will be observed.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Conneaut Station 3 Rescue Squad. Envelopes are available at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, which is in charge of arrangements.
Evelyn C. Davis
CONNEAUT - Evelyn Cecelia Davis, 86, formerly of Mill Street in Conneaut, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at The Villa at the Lake in Conneaut.
She was born Sept. 17, 1915, in Baltimore, the daughter of David and Emma Cecelia Wiley, and moved to Conneaut from Cleveland in 1948.
A licensed practice nurse, she also worked as a clerk for the former First Federal Savings and Loan and the credit bureau.
She studied music at Edinboro State University, and traveled to Europe, including Hungary and Vienna, studying student management at the University of Salzburg.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Pythian Sisters. She was treasurer of the Friends of the Library, president of the Daughters of Union Veterans and a member of Lone Star Grange. Poems she wrote were published in "World of Poetry."
She was a photographer for senior citizens and wrote about plants and herbs for the Conneaut Courier. She was also an avid supporter of the Miss Conneaut Scholarship Pageant.
Survivors include a brother, Donald Wiley of Conneaut.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Frank M. Davis.
Service is 2 p.m. Friday at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut. The Rev. Walter Coy, pastor of the United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will follow at City Cemetery in Conneaut.
Calling hours at the funeral home are 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Margaret E. Schmidt
NORTH KINGSVILLE - Margaret E. Schmidt, 84, of Gore Road, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
Mrs. Schmidt was born April 8, 1918, in Conneaut, a daughter of Neal and Rhoda (Evans) Tanner. She was a lifelong resident.
A graduate of Conneaut High School, Mrs. Schmidt also had two years of college education.
She attended First Assembly of God and was a member of the Ashtabula County Historical Society.
In addition, Mrs. Schmidt had been employed by the city of Conneaut as municipal court clerk, police chief clerk and radio dispatcher of the Conneaut Police Department.
She also had been a city reporter for the former Conneaut News-Herald.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, story-writing and was an avid photographer.
Survivors include her husband, Daniel T. Schmidt, whom she married Oct. 16, 1939; three daughters, Lenora Toth of Victorville, Calif., Dannette Ingersoll of Conneaut and Billie Gee of West Springfield, Pa.; her son, Tom of Millcreek; her sister, Betty Smith of Conneaut; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Paul, at birth.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Jack D. Woods and Rev. Fred Schmidt of First Assembly of God officiating.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Conneaut.
No calling hours will be observed.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Fama D. Hicks
CONNEAUT - Fama D. Hicks, 85, of Conneaut, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at the Inn-Conneaut Health Center.
She was born Aug. 26, 1916, in Walton, W.Va., the daughter of Issac and Martha (McCroskey) Walker, and spent most of her life in Conneaut and Monroe Township.
A homemaker, she attended East Conneaut United Methodist Church and Monroe United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed nature, gardening, playing cards, crocheting and spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet Curtiss of Conneaut; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mayble Thomas of Ona, W.Va.; and a brother, Berl Walker of Polk City, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald F.; a son, David; three sisters and three brothers.
Service is 1 p.m. Thursday at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut. The Rev. Armando C. Arellano, pastor of East Conneaut United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Ronald Gamble, pastor of Monroe United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Kelloggsville Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.
Beverly J. Crellin
HOUSTON, Texas - Beverly Jean Crellin, 74, died Nov. 18, 2001, at the Clearlake Regional Hospital, Houston.
She was born June 1, 1927, in Ashtabula, the daughter of Josephine Quick.
Mrs. Crellin moved from Painesville to Houston, Texas, and had lived there for the past 24 years.
She was a homemaker. She enjoyed socializing with her family and friends.
Mrs. Crellin was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Church, Houston.
Survivors include two sons, David and Greg Bezzeg of Tampa, Fla.; and a daughter, Karen Bezzeg of Houston.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Elwin.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenlawn Mausoleum Chapel, North Kingsville. The Rev. Phillip Miller of St. Joseph Church, Ashtabula, will officiate. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Mausoleum, North Kingsville

Lois M. Kalmers
CONNEAUT - Lois M. Kalmers, 77, Detroit St., died Friday, December 20, 2002, in UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Allison, Pa., Oct. 16, 1925, to James Nixon and Freda Harries and had resided here since 1945. Prior to that, she had made her home in the Youngstown area.
Mrs. Kalmers was employed by the former Astatic Corporation as a Secretary for 11 years. She and her husband Ed bought the Johnson Drive In, which they ran for 38 years until their retirement.
Mrs. Kalmers was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Conneaut Elks and the Irish Colleens. In her leisure time, she enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles and Bingo. She was an avid Indians fan and while watching kept her own statistics of each player. She also enjoyed being with her family and eight grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Edward W., to whom she had been married to for the past 57 years; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Joan) Rockwell of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Mrs. David (Amy) Gruenberg of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Tonia Ward, Ronald Ward Jr., Jennifer Chaplin, Jeff Chaplin, Jeff Rockwell, Stephen Gruenberg, Adam Gruenberg and Salima Davidson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Marcia Ward.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Harding, Pastor, officiating.
Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Calling hours will be Monday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut.
The family requests that memorials be made in her name to the Conneaut Station #3 Rescue Squad or the church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
