Albert D. Salsbury
Friday, October 5. 2007
CONNEAUT - Al Salsbury, age 77, passed away peacefully the morning of October 3, 2007, in the care of Hospice, with his wife, Clara, and daughter, Lynn, at his bedside.
Up until his death, Al spent a lifetime overcoming the odds. He was born near the beginning of the Great Depression, on June 28, 1930, the last of Fred and Ivah Salsburys three children. His arrival alone was a surprise, as his mother was nearing 47 years of age at his birth, and his father was 50. As a youngster, Al contracted polio. He recovered, and spent his youth helping his parents eke out a living on their small farm.
Al was raised in West Springfield, Pa. The family farmhouse never had running water, plumbing or central heat. They obtained electrical service when Al was 15. His parents’ primary vehicle for travel was a horse and wagon. Al loved automobiles and couldn’t wait to own a Ford coupe, just like the one Robert Mitchum drove in “Thunder Road.” Graduating from West Springfield School in 1948, Al taught himself automobile repair. He eventually became renowned in the area for his skill as an automobile damage repairman, a “body man.”
Al courted the love of his life, Clara Woodworth, and they married on July 18, 1953. They had four children: Steven, Mark, Scott and Lynn. Al was a firm parent, who acted as sternly as circumstances required. He was ahead of his time with household chores. After putting in a 12 hour day at work, he washed dishes every night after dinner. When the children were young, he bathed them in the tub upstairs, and helped them wash their hair in the kitchen sink. He spent most of his Saturday mornings washing clothes at the Laundromat.
Al worked hard to take care of his family. He worked two jobs up until his younger two children were in high school. To increase his income, Al became an automobile damage appraiser in the late 1960’s. He traveled from Conneaut to Cleveland, covering most of Northeast Ohio. In the winter, it wasn’t unusual for Al to be somewhere on Interstate 90 when blizzard conditions would require the closing of the highway. He didn’t work for a company that afforded vacations until late in his career. When he retired from Motorist Mutual Insurance Company in 1995, he was one of the company’s most trusted appraisers.
Al played almost as hard as he worked. In his younger years, he loved to roller skate. He was an excellent dancer. Al enjoyed watching the Blue Angels. He followed the Cleveland Indians. Al loved to bowl. For many years, he and Clara bowled in a couples league. Al also bowled competitively in Moose Lodge Tournaments. He was a life-long member of the Conneaut Moose Lodge, and served twice as its Governor.
Although reserved by nature, Al had an excellent sense of humor. He was proud, but never boasted. He was direct but judged sparingly. Al never complained, and he didn’t give opinions unless asked. Like Will Rogers, he never met a man he didn’t like. People liked him as soon as they met him. He said what he meant, and meant what he said.
Al was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease when he was in his early 50’s. He spent the next 25 years ignoring its increasingly debilitating effects. Al was first diagnosed with cancer more than a decade ago. He faced it bravely through two series of treatment, remission and reoccurrence. This summer, Al could no longer take care of himself, necessitating his admission to a nursing home. Unfortunately, he succumbed to Parkinson’s and cancer. He leaves behind to honor his memory his wife, children and several grandchildren.
Calling Hours for Al will be held at Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, on Sunday, October 7, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Monday, October 8, 2007, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, Al’s family requests that donations be made either to the Conneaut Rescue Squad or to Hospice of the Western Reserve. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.
