Arnold A. Laine
CONNEAUT - Arnold A. (Archie) Laine, 81, of Mill Street, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at University Hospital, Cleveland, following a short illness.
Born Jan. 1, 1921, in Conneaut, he was a son of Anton and Selma (Parkomaki) Laine.
A lifelong Conneaut resident, he was a 1939 Conneaut High School graduate and served on the reunion planning committees. He was a carpenter by trade and worked for several area contractors, including Loomis and Laituri, John Wirkkala, Jim Bunnell and Waino Mackey, before retiring from the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Co.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Italian and North African theaters of operation. He was a member and past commander of Cowle Post 151, American Legion.
Mr. Laine was a member of the Democratic Party and was interested in government affairs and politics. He enjoyed watching C-Span I and C-Span II to keep up with current affairs.
An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching the Cleveland Browns and Indians. He enjoyed outside work, wildlife, his family and especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Helen M. (Surma), whom he married May 26, 1945; two daughters, Cindy A. Downs of Yorktown, Va., and Janie K. Laine of Ashtabula; a son, Greg A., of Sugar Land, Texas; a sister, Viola Halkola of Hancock, Mich.; two brothers, Raymond of Conneaut, and Donald of Cedarburg, Wis., nine grandchildren, Jennifer Vincent, Jessica Downs, Timothy, Kristen and Melissa Haight, John Loeffel Jr., Erika Loeffel, Melanie and Eric Laine, and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Service is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Raymond Thomas of St. Mary's and St. Frances Cabrini Church officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, with the American Legion conducting military rites.
Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Francis A. Chiro
CONNEAUT - Francis A. Chiro, 76, formerly of West Springfield, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Villa at the Lake.
The son of Michael and Mary (Mancuso) Chiro, he was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Silvercreek, N. Y.
Mr. Chiro was a 1942 graduate of Silvercreek High, and a U. S. Army veteran, honorably discharged from the 498th Bomber Squadron as staff sergeant.
He was employed by Nickel Plate Railroad, and later retired after 36 years of service as a conductor with the Norfolk and Southern Railroad.
He was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Conneaut, Veterans of Foreign War, Jefferson Square Dancers and Moose Club.
Mr. Chiro enjoyed woodworking, carving, stained glass and carpentry. He was also active as a Boy Scout leader.
Survivors include his wife, Betty M. (Brown), whom he married May 11, 1953, in Albion, Pa.; two daughters: Jeanne Miller of Girard, Pa., and Mary Jo Haranin of West Springfield, Pa.; three sons: Howard Gibson of Albion, Pa., Terry Gibson of Kirtland and Michael of Madison; two sisters: Mildred Karr of Silvercreek, N.Y., and Christine Jerome of Buffalo, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Church, 480 State St., Conneaut, with the Rev. Raymond Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at East Springfield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Raisian Funeral Home, 581 Harbor St., Conneaut.

Dennis F. Hazeltine

CONNEAUT - Dennis F. Hazeltine, age 60, of Conneaut, died Thursday, September 20, 2007 at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was born April 29, 1947 in Conneaut, the son of Elwin E. and Edythe R. (Weaver) Hazeltine. Dennis had worked as a backhoe operator for the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company retiring February 18, 2004.
He was a member of the Conneaut Moose Club, and the Eagles Club. Dennis loved his grandchildren, was a kind hearted friend to many and could always make them laugh. He loved the outdoors, driving in the country, and Harley Davidsons.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Hazeltine and her boyfriend, Roy Lane of Cleveland, Ohio, and Angela Hazeltine and her fiancé, Justin Martin of Mingo Junction, Ohio; four sisters, Sharon (Steve) Mitrovich, Patricia Feathers and Tony Mostello, all of Conneaut, Debra Theiss of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Pamela (Mark) Brady of Indianapolis, Ind.; two brothers, Wallace E. Hazeltine, and Gerald L. Hazeltine, both of Conneaut; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his best friend, Frank Sumner; and his brother-in-law, Michael Theiss.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Monday, September 24, 2007, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with family friend, Carl Salters officiating.
Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Sunday, September 23, 2007, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Charles Bowers, Jr.

CONNEAUT - Charles Bowers, Jr., of Carl St., died Thursday, September 20, 2007 at his home.
He was born October 29, 1926 in Conneaut, Ohio to the late Charles Bowers, Sr. and Mazie (Kinney) Bowers. Charles was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during WW II as a Staff Sergeant in the Philippine Islands. He was a Foreman for the PNC Dock Company retiring in 1985.
Charles enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Ashtabula, and had previously been a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Conneaut. Charles was a member of the Conneaut Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #472, Life Member of American Legion Cowle Post #151 and a Life Member of VFW Post# 2836.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Jeanette in 2006; brothers, Arthur and Harold Bowers; sisters, Matilda Rose and Dorothy West; and brother-in-laws, Vernard and Glenn Kinney.
He is survived by a sister, Gladys Ferguson of New Mexico; brothers, Donald (Charlotte) Bowers of Conneaut, and Bill (Delores) Bowers of Sheffield; sister-in-laws, Carol (Ken) Simon and Winifred Guy both of Conneaut; nephew, Louis (Shirley) Bowers of Ashtabula; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Midnight.
Funeral Services will be held at 11a.m. Monday, September 24, 2007 at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, with Mother Barbara Johnson, Rector of St. Peters Episcopal Church officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens where the American Legion Cowle Post #151will conduct military rites.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, September 23, 2007 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
Robert Guy Sr.

CONNEAUT - Robert Guy Sr., 79, of Conneaut, died Sunday, September 16, 2007, at the V.A. Medical Center in Erie, PA. He was born June 3, 1928 in Conneaut, the son of Ray and Clara (Ross) Guy.
Robert was a veteran of U.S. Army serving during World War II, and had worked for U.S. Scrap Iron as a crane operator. He was a member of Lakeview United Methodist Church, raced cars for many years at Raceway 7, enjoyed fishing, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Winifred (Kinney), whom he married November 29, 1950; his daughter, Carol Wright and her special friend Mark Ellingson, both of West Springfield, PA; two sons, Robert Guy, Jr., and Rickey (Bonnie) Guy, all of Conneaut; gradchildren Ed Guy, Tori Guy, both of Conneaut, Wendy (Jason) Bish of Albion, PA, Kayla Wright, Alford Wright, Kristy Wright, and Casey Sikora, all of West Springfield, PA; his step-granddaughter Charlene Lewis of Havelock, NC; three great-grandchildren, Devon Guy, Jeffrey Bish, and Peyton Bish, all of Albion, PA; and his brother, Homer Guy, of Girard, PA.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and step-daughter Kay Struchen.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with the Rev. David Miller of Lakeview United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, OH, with military rites conducted by the Geneva VFW Post 6846.
Friends may call at the funeral home today, Tuesday, September 18, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Scot Lee Allen
CONNEAUT - Scot Lee Allen, 37, of South Ridge Road, Kingsville, died Tuesday, August 28, 2001, at the UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital.
He was born September 12, 1963, in Ashtabula, the son of Floyd J. and Darline (Richmond) Allen.
He was a graduate of Ashtabula High School. He previously worked as a janitor for Ashtabula Area City Schools and Community Counseling Center.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, and spending time with his family.
Survivors included his wife, Virginia (Johnson), whom he married June 22, 1996; one brother, James Allen of Kingsville; three sisters, Shirley Partridge of Ashtabula, Bobbie Andrejack of Kingsville, and Beckie Walsh of Chardon; a stepdaughter, Shawna Rose; two step-grandchildren, several nephews and a niece; and his mother, Darline Allen.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1971.
A private service will be held at the family gravesite at Edgewood Cemetery. The Rev. Jack Woods, Pastor of First Assembly of God, Conneaut will officiate.
Calling hours will be Thursday, August 30, 2001 from 7 to 9 P.M. at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula.
