Palma de Csicsery
DANVILLE, Calif. - Palma de Csicsery, née Palma Tahy, 95, formerly of Ashtabula, died at a convalescent hospital on March 29, 2003. She was born Dec. 5, 1907, in Budapest, Hungary, the daughter of Jakab de Tahy and Margaret de Lukacs, the sixth of eight children. The Tahy family traces its origins to one of the seven tribal chieftains who accompanied Arpad when the Magyars invaded and settled in the Carpathian Basin in 896. Over the centuries, the family spawned numerous notable Hungarian government officials, military leaders and clergymen.
At 7 years old, while vacationing with her family on the Adriatic Coast of the then Austro-Hungarian Empire, Mrs. Csicsery witnessed the royal tour of Archduke Francis-Ferdinand only two days before his assassination in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, the event that sparked World War I.
She attended a French boarding school run by the Notre Dame Sisters in Budapest and gained a proficiency in French and classical culture. In 1927, she married Lt. Zsigmond Csicsery. The couple had three sons, Sigmund, Michael and George. Until the end of World War II, she lived the life of a Hungarian army officer's wife.
She was living in the city of Kassa, now Kosice in Slovakia, when that city was bombed by Nazi Germany as a successful ruse to bring Hungary into its war against the Soviet Union. In 1945, she left Hungary with her husband and second son. They became refugees in Germany, first living in Regensburg, Bavaria, where her husband worked as secretary to the Archduke Joseph von Habsburg, and later in Herrenalb near Baden-Baden. In Herrenalb, she worked as a secretary in the professional training office of the French occupation authorities. The family emigrated to the United States in 1951, settling in Cleveland.
After doing a variety of work, including as a domestic servant, Avon products salesperson and restaurant owner, she found a position at the slide department of the Cleveland Museum of Art during the mid-1950s, eventually becoming the department's director. She retired from the museum in 1973 and moved to Ashtabula to be near a favorite beach.
She lived in Ashtabula for 27 years and spent a part of every day walking on Walnut Beach or swimming in the lake. She moved to Moraga, Calif., in 1999, when a stroke made it impossible for her to continue living alone.
Her survivors include two sons, Sigmund M. Csicsery of Lafayette, Calif., and George P. Csicsery of Oakland, Calif.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Zsigmond, in 1962; one son, Mike M. Csicsery, in 1978; three sisters; four brothers; and her parents.
A memorial Mass for Mrs. de Csicsery will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Church, Ashtabula, the weekend of April 27. A celebration of her life will be held in July in California, where her children and grandchildren reside. In addition, a memorial Mass is planned for later this year at the chapel in Balatonszemes, Hungary, where her remains will be entombed with those of her husband, in the Tahy family crypt.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Steven Gerencser Calasanctius Fund, c/o G. Csicsery, P.O. Box 22833, Oakland, CA 94609. Local inquiries may be directed to Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula.
