Jeffry E. Fagerstrom
SAN FRANCISCO - Ashtabula native Dr. Jeffry E. Fagerstrom, 58, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco, Calif., after an inspirational 12-year battle with brain cancer.
He was born Aug. 11, 1942, in Cleveland, the son of Elmer O. and Eleanor J. (Hoover) Fagerstrom. He grew up in Ashtabula, graduating in 1960 from Edgewood High School.
He attended The Ohio State University in Columbus, graduating summa cum laude in 1967 from the College of Dentistry with a doctorate of dental sciences.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for three years, including a one-year tour of duty in Thailand, where he treated soldiers injured in the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged as a captain, he returned to the OSU College of Dentistry, where he earned a master's degree in periodontology. Dr. Fagerstrom practiced periodontics in Colorado before moving to San Francisco in the late 1970s, where he continued his practice.
Dr. Fagerstrom taught for many years at the dental schools at the University of California at San Francisco and the University of the Pacific, also in San Francisco. After his cancer diagnosis in 1989, he left private practice to become a full-time instructor at UOP. He was the recipient of numerous teaching awards.
He retired from teaching in 1994 and moved to Glen Ellen, in Sonoma County, Calif., where he combined his love of teaching and respect for nature by becoming a volunteer and docent at the Bouverie Preserve. He was very active at Bouverie until mid-year 2000, when failing health forced his retirement.
Dr. Fagerstrom was an inspiration to many as he embraced his cancer as an opportunity to grow spiritually. With no acceptable treatment available to him through Western medicine, he chose the path of Eastern and alternative medicines and healing practices. This lifestyle allowed him to outlive the prognosis of traditional doctors by a full decade.
Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Betty Brachman of San Francisco; son, Eric of Boulder, Colo.; daughter, Kirsten of Puerto Rico; brother, Scot of Kent; sister, Jacqueline Fagerstrom of Kingsville.
He was preceded in death by his mother in 1977, father in 1992 and brother, Richard Allen, in 1948.
