Harold Gibson Barrett Jr.
MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. - Former Geneva (Ohio) resident Harold Gibson Barrett Jr., 92, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at his home.
He was born June 20, 1908, in Wilmette, Ill., the son of Harold Gibson Barrett Sr. and Mayme (Gulke), and was raised in Wilmette.
He was a graduate of New Trier High School.
He came from a family that were pioneers in golf club technology, and his interest in the sport began when he worked as a caddie at Chicago-area golf courses, starting at age 12. He was an excellent golfer, and played in tournaments in Ashtabula and Lake counties.
When the Monsanto Chemical Company developed a hollow celluloid tubing for steel golf shafts that resembled wood, Mr. Barrett's father developed a process of heating the celluloid tube with steam and stretching it over the steel shaft.
His father was a partner in the Pyratone Products Company, and in 1929 Harold Jr., who also worked for Pyratone, came to Geneva at the request of True Temper to supervise the covering of steel golf shafts with the special sheath. He became a permanent employee of True Temper in 1934.
During World War II, he became plant manager on the night shift for True Temper's bayonet works in Ashtabula. Later, he worked in the accounting department and in 1955 became manager of accounting for the tubular products division. He retired in 1972 as comptroller for the division.
He was a member of Madison Country Club for many years, and continued to play golf after he and his wife, the former Marianne Crittenden, moved to Hemet, Calif., in 1978.
He also enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include his wife, whom he married in Geneva in 1932; daughters Mary Ellen Prichard of McKinleyville, Calif., and Shirley Parsons Reiner of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, Thomas Barrett of Pismo Beach, Calif.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters; a grandson, James Barrett; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Prichard.
A memorial service was held in McKinleyville.
Beverly J. Allen
GENEVA - Beverly J. Allen, 74, died Jan. 4, 2001, at UHHS Hospitals in Cleveland.
She was born Sept. 5, 1926, in Akron, the daughter of Haskell H. Keep and Mary Gladys Kelley.
Mrs. Allen moved to Dorset in 1932 and graduated from Dorset High School in 1944. She attended Kent State University as a vocal music major until her marriage to Robert G. Elliott Sept. 10, 1946.
She married Edgar H. Allen, a Geneva-on-the-Lake businessman, Dec. 13, 1974, in Geneva. They operated Allen Court General Store and Cottages. Prior to Mr. Allen's death they enjoyed gardening, music, creating and sharing handmade decorative arts and home-grown floral arrangements. Mrs. Allen continued her folk art and music until her death. She also enjoyed genealogy, feeding birds and her dogs.
Earlier in life, Mrs. Allen was employed in the business office at Carlisle-Allen in Ashtabula. She later assisted with her first husband's business. She was employed 10 years as secretary at the Ashtabula County Ohio State University Cooperative Extension Service.
She was organist at Plymouth United Methodist Church and choir director for numerous years at First United Methodist Church, Jefferson. She was a Girl Scout troop leader in that area for many years while teaching piano privately.
Survivors include two brothers, James D. Keep of Estes Park, Colo., and Ralph H. Keep of Dorset; three daughters, Susan E. Zacharias of Woodstock, Va., Kathleen Elliott of Geneva and Victoria Allen Shatto of Geneva-on-the-Lake; a son, James E. Allen of Geneva-on-the-Lake; and two grandchildren, Rachel B. Boyer of Virginia and Jesse Allen Shatto of Geneva-on-the-Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Edgar, December 1988; and her first husband.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Jan. 22 at Kennedy-Billman Funeral Home Inc., 323 S. Broadway, Geneva, with the Rev. Kathleen Evans officiating. A private inurnment service will take place at the Dorset family plot.

Martha E. Reynolds
GENEVA - Martha E. Reynolds, 88, of South Eagle St., Geneva, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the Country Club Retirement Center in Ashtabula, after a long illness.
She was born February 22, 1915, in Holloway, OH, the daughter of Harry and Louella (Douglas) Mitchell and has been an area resident since 1950.
She was a member of the Geneva First United Methodist Church, where she had been very active. She was a member of the Miriam Circle of the Church, and she also enjoyed baking.
Surviving her is a daughter, Helen (Tom) Cameron of Geneva; two grandchildren, Patrick and Louise; and a great-grandson, Ted Cameron.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman, in 1978; a brother, Ralph; and two sisters, Edith and Anna Myers Ward.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 13, 2003, at the Kennedy-Billman Funeral Home, 323 South Broadway, Geneva, with the Rev. Hugh Hookway officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Cadiz, OH. Calling hours will be today, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Helen M. Underwood
GENEVA - Helen M. Underwood, 84, of Clyde Rd., N. Madison, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at RAE-ANN Geneva.
Helen was born October 26, 1918, in East Liverpool, the daughter of William E. and Ethel L. (Sharp) Grady. She was a homemaker and had worked at American Viscoe in Parkersburg, WV, from 1936 until 1955.
Mrs. Underwood enjoyed taking pictures, spending time with her grandchildren, and cooking. She was a member of Madison TOPS.
Survivors include her husband, Burl; one daughter, Diana Mundie of Geneva; two grandchildren, Roger Camp Jr. of Avon, and Halle Shipley of Geneva-on-the-Lake; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Dwight Grady; and one sister, Ruth Lawrence.
A Memorial Service will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 16, at the Donald E. Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman St., Geneva. Mrs. Underwood's grandson, Roger Camp Jr., Pastoral Associate of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Avon, will be officiating.
Calling hours will be held Friday, June 13, from 6–8 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home.
Frances L. Scrimshaw
GENEVA - Frances L. Scrimshaw, 93, formerly of Richard Street, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Sacred Heart Nursing Center of Geneva.
She was born in Harpersfield Township, the daughter of George H. and Maude (Wharram) Walter and had been a lifelong area resident.
She worked at Wright's Department Store in Geneva. She was also a homemaker and a member of Unionville United Church and the Women's Fellowship of the United Church of Christ; was president of the American Legion Auxiliary of Geneva's George Call Post 124; a member of Artist Group and Geneva Garden Club; was an American Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer and was a member of the Mayflower Society.
She enjoyed gardening and scrimshawing, the art of carving on ivory.
Survivors include a son, Robert W. Brown of Geneva; a daughter, Betty J. Beech of Cuyahoga Falls; five grandchildren, Scott, Cindy and Raymond Beach, Diane Haines and Ryan Brown; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert W. Walker of Mentor.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jennings W. Brown, in 1938; her second husband, Charles F. Scrimshaw, in 1993; a daughter, Barbara L. Brown; a granddaughter, Deborah A. Brown; and a brother, Barton Walter.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Donald E. Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman St., Geneva. The Rev. James H. Lane, of Faith Baptist Church in Perry, will officiate. Burial will be at Unionville Cemetery in Unionville.
Calling hour at the funeral home is 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of service.
Theresa Pelcarsky
GENEVA - Theresa Pelcarsky, 82, of Centennial Street, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at UHHS Memorial Hospital of Geneva.
She was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Short Creek, the daughter of John and Theresa (Bartock) Yuhas.
Mrs. Pelcarsky was a homemaker. She married Michael Pelcarsky on Nov. 11, 1939, in Jefferson.
She enjoyed hooking rugs and gardening.
Survivors include son, Michael A. of Geneva; two grandsons, David and Joshua; two sisters, Mary Yuhas of Rock Creek and Jeannette Baker of Jefferson; and a brother, James Yuhas of Austinburg Township.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael; her parents; two sisters, Helen Helsel and Margaret Jozafczek; and a brother, Steve Yuhas.
Graveside service is 11 a.m., Monday at the Unionville Cemetery, Unionville, with Stan Herren officiating.
The Donald E. Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman St., Geneva, has charge of the arrangements.
