Andrew Pencak
HOUSTON, Texas - Andrew John Pencak, 72, died Wednesday, May 28, 2002, in Houston.
Born in Geneva, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Jeannine; a daughter, Kimberly Pencak; son, Andrew "Dru" Pencak III; two grandchildren, Andrew IV and Kyle; and a brother, Richard.
A service was held June 1 at the Chapel of the Settegast-Kopf Co. Funeral Directors, 3320 Kirby Drive, Houston, Texas. Burial was in Houston National Cemetery.
Isabelle M. Congdon
GENEVA - Isabelle M. Congdon, 92, of Commerce Place, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Rae-Ann Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 14, 1910, in Cleveland, to William and Threasa (Angowski) Pokorski. She was formerly an Ashtabula resident.
Mrs. Congdon was a machine operator at Industrial Rayon Corp in Painesville for 20 years. She was a member of Peoples Church of Geneva.
Survivors include sons Gerald Congdon of Willoughby and Thomas Congdon of Geneva; grandchildren Jim, Thomas Jr., Randy, Justine, Angela and Chrissy; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Randall Congdon; son Ronald Congdon, brothers Joseph, Raymond and Alfred Pokorski, and sister Regina Novak.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Donald E. Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman St., Geneva, officiated by the Rev. Jimmie Walker of the Peoples Church of Geneva. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Geneva.
There will be no calling hours per Mrs. Congdon's request.
William Griffin
CHICAGO - Former Conneaut resident, William P. Griffin, 74, of Chicago, died Wed., Nov. 7, 2001, in Chicago.
He was born Oct. 3, 1927, in Conneaut, a son of John and Lucy (Bricker) McCallister.
A Chicago resident for the past 34 years, he was an apartment building custodian and was employed by the Union of Janitorial Services. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Betty Vorse of Geneva; a niece, Barbara Soltis of Geneva; and a nephew, Barry Vorse of Jacksonville, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ethel "Edie, " and a brother, John.
Graveside service is at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, with the Rev. Armando Arellano of East Conneaut United Methodist Church officiating.
The Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, is in charge of arrangements.
Thomas D. Scalise
NEW YORK CITY - Thomas D. Scalise, 48, of New York City, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born March 12, 1953, in Conneaut, the son of Bernard V. and Carol (Harlacher) Scalise. He lived in New York City for the past 17 years, moving there from Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was a student of fine art and illustration at the Parsons School of Design between 1988 and 1994, and a drafting student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City between 1990 and 1991. He was an archaeological illustrator, and at the time of his death was employed in the Egyptian art department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He also was an illustrator in his private business, "Black and White Lace."
As part of his field work for his illustrations, he explored Easter Island cultures; excavated 14th century ceramic tiles in Moscow; illustrated fresco and landscapes in Pompeii, Italy; did ceramic artifact illustrations in LaPaz, Honduras; and conducted soil profiles and test pit grids in Huaraz, Peru.
He had worked in Egypt and was commissioned to do work in Canada and Argentina. He also was a world traveler, having toured Switzerland and England in addition to his work-related journeys.
He was a performer, appearing on Broadway with Anthony Quinn in "Zorba the Greek, " and also in "Fiddler on the Roof." He also was involved in wardrobe for many Broadway plays.
He loved nature and the outdoors, and in his leisure time, he enjoyed bicycling and hiking the Grand Canyon.
Survivors include his mother, of Ashtabula; and a brother, Gary B. Scalise, of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut. The Rev. David Hines, pastor of the Kingsville Baptist Church, will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kingsville Baptist Church Memorial Fund or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Barbara Ellen Jean Lane
BUSHNELL, Fla. Barbara Ellen Jean Lane, 58, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, in Bushnell.
Ms. Lane was born in West Virginia. A former Ashtabula resident, she moved to Florida 23 years ago and had been a resident of Bushnell since 1993.
She was employed as a waitress.
Survivors include two daughters: Shelly Fletcher of Vanceburg, Ky., and Brenda Watson of Crystal River, Fla.; two brothers: Henry Bryan of Bushnell and James Bryan of Ashtabula; two sisters: Ethel Griffith and Carolyn Lemon, both of Ashtabula; six grandchildren; and one stepson, Daniel Varkett of Ohio.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ohio.
Purcell Funeral Home, 114 W. Noble Ave., Bushnell, is handling arrangements.
Edward F. Rappold
SPRING HILL, Fla. - Edward F. Rappold, 82, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000 at Regional Medical Center, Bayonet Point, Fla. He was a resident of Spring Hill, Fla.
Mr. Rappold was born in Geneva and moved to Florida 23 years ago.
He was an electrical engineer with ITT in the aerospace division. He graduated from Tri-State University, a member of Plantation Golf Resort, a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of the Nativity Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Aino of Spring Hill, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were made by Turner Cremation and Memorial Chapel, Spring Hill, Fla.
Dorothy A. Armush
GENEVA - Dorothy A. Armush, 92, of Geneva, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Geneva.
Born September 10, 1910, in Randolph, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Emmett and Gertrude (Lansinger) Horning.
Having spent most of her life in the Geneva area, she married Nick Armush, July 15, 1971, in Geneva.
She enjoyed cooking, embroidery and flower gardening, and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Madison.
Survivors include two sons, Herman Magargee of Geneva, and Franklin Magargee of Rootstown, Ohio; one daughter, Mary Walters of Akron; one brother, Hubert Horning of Randolph, Ohio; five sisters, Joan Myers of Randolph, Mary Christman of Uniontown, Jeanette Horning of Canton, Rita Withrow of Akron, and Threse Vigh of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick Armush, in 1988; one sister, Anna Horning; one grandson; and her parents.
The funeral will be Wednesday, June 18th, at noon, at the Donald E. Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman Street, Geneva, OH.
Burial will be at the Trumbull Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 18th, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
