HELEN W. SMOLEN
JEFFERSON -- Helen W. Smolen, age 89, departed this life peacefully on Thursday, April 13, 2006, at the Jefferson Health Center, Jefferson, Ohio, with members of her loving family by her side.
Born August 29, 1916, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late Phillip and Anna Washut.
She was the wife of John W. Smolen Sr., and the mother of three sons, John Jr. (Marie) of Jefferson, Richard (Susan) of Baden, Pennsylvania, and Gerald (Dianne) of Holland, Ohio. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Andrew of Jefferson, Julie (Mark) Forgach of Toledo, Kristen (David) Carrel of Mentor, Jeffery (Kristin) of Gross Point, Michigan, Steven of Pittsburgh, Katheryn (Greg) Snyder of Toledo, and Elizabeth (Jack) Hunter of Toledo; seven wonderful great-grandchildren; a brother, Mike (Shirley) Washut; and a sister, Rosanne Werenko of Jefferson.
She moved to the Jefferson area as a child with her parents, who had acquired the dairy farm on Route 46 North, where she and her husband eventually purchased the farm from her father, and operated it lifelong.
Helen had a heart of gold to help those who were less fortunate. She will always be remembered for her unselfishness and generosity to her family, friends and community. She was generous to her sons, whom she insisted that they better themselves by getting the education that she couldn't get as a young person. All of her three sons graduated from Ohio State University, and moved on to productive lives as an engineer, veterinarian, and a university professor.
She was a member of St. Joseph Calasanctius Catholic Church of Jefferson.
Her kitchen was the focal point for her many friends that dropped by for a visit. She always insisted that they "eat something" before they leave. This could include something ranging from a piece of one of her delicious homemade pastries to a full meal with the family.
Her activity in the community centered on her lifelong membership in the Griggs Grange. She could be counted on to take one of her specialty desserts to the grange meetings.
In her earlier years, she worked tirelessly on the Ashtabula County Fair Grange Exhibitors' Booth. Her pastry or grain exhibits frequently won a prize at the fair's homemaker exhibits.
Her passion, however, was her garden and the farm animals. Throughout the year, she shared her frozen garden vegetables with her family, giving grandchildren a chance to experience the taste of these true farm fresh delights. Her sweet corn was legendary among the kids. Working the dairy farm hand-in-hand with her husband, she understood the business of farming, both its rewards and the risks. Her favorite task was selecting a name for each of the dairy cows that best reflected their character.
In many respects, she was ahead of her time in gardening and animal husbandry. She proved herself somewhat of an organic gardener and dairy farmer. As newly developed chemicals became readily available for use in plant insect control and in animal health care, their routine use was objectionable to her. Her attitude was, "I don't want those chemicals in our food supply, they can't be good for you!" Helen also understood the positive role of vitamins in achieving a healthy diet.
She had been suffering from declining health for a number of years, but courageously continued living independently with her husband, John, until about six months ago when she suffered a mild stroke. At that time, he couldn't care for her adequately, and then she moved into the nursing home.
