Dr. John R. Patterson, Sr.
December 15, 1919 - December 9, 2011
Services: December 14th, 2011 at 10:30 A. M.
With his loving family surrounding him, Dr. John R. Patterson Sr. set sail on his final voyage on the morning of Friday, December 9th. Born the fourth child of John and Daisy (Sayre) Patterson, young John was welcomed into this world on December 15th, 1919. He was 91 and was eagerly looking forward to celebrating his 92nd birthday.
As a youth, John grew up in Beaver Falls, PA delivering papers and working in his father's gas station. He came of age during the Great Depression and, like many, worked multiple part-time jobs to help support the family. After graduation from Beaver Falls High School, John matriculated to Geneva College, located in the same small town. As a young man, he joined the Elks Club (Lodge #348) and was nearly a 70 year life member. Prior to, and during the early stages of, WW II, he worked as a chemist for A.N. Bowers of Ambridge, PA. In due course, John joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific theatre until his honorable discharge in 1946. His experience in the Navy solidified his beliefs about service for the greater good. Little did he know at the time that his life of service had really just begun.
John was determined to finish his education and so, he ventured to Indianapolis where he enrolled at the Lincoln Chiropractic College. After his graduation in 1951, he returned to PA and practiced in Venango, just north of Meadville where his parents had moved. To help support his parents while he established his practice, the new doctor worked at the Talon plant in Meadville. It was here that his life would change forever when he met, in February 1955, the love of his life, Donna Lines. After a whirlwind romance, the two were married on July 9th, 1955 and moved to Jefferson (OH) in August. Never ones to halfheartedly pursue anything, John and Donna began their family with that same passionate enthusiasm. In short order, John Jr. was born in 1956 followed by Kenneth in 1958 and Cindy in 1959.
During this time, Dr. John joined the Exchange Club of Jefferson and was a former past president and proud member until it disbanded. He served this organization with great pride and enthusiasm for over 50 years. He also bowled and golfed with the teams sponsored by the Exchange Club.
Throughout the 1960's his practice continued to grow. Practicing first in two rooms, and then in three rooms of his residence, he decided to purchase a small house directly behind his home on West Ashtabula St. to accommodate increased business. Thus in 1969 the Patterson Chiropractic Clinic officially opened on West Pine St. Dr. John would practice there until his retirement in 2002. All told, he served the Jefferson community for 47 years.
Serving his patients was exceedingly important to him whether that be during normally scheduled office hours or, as was often the case, when a patient needed immediate relief. Many times he would excuse himself from family functions to serve the needs of a patient. He believed to his core that serving others was an absolute necessity and part of his duty to uphold the Hippocratic oath.
John attended the Jefferson United Methodist Church and served as an usher there for many years. He was also a 32nd degree Mason with the Scottish Rite, Valley of Cleveland and a member of the Tuscan Lodge #342 F. & A. M. in Jefferson. Dr. John was a member of the American Chiropractic Association and the Northeast Ohio Academy of Chiropractic.
Just last month he was presented with a Veterans' pin by Hospice of the Western Reserve. John was very proud to have served his country during WW II. Furthermore, his legacy of service to his nation, his community, and his patients was a special gift he not only modeled, but bequeathed freely to his family.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna, son John, Jr. (Nancy), and daughter-in-law, Linda. Grandchildren include Kim (Greg) Cotton, Ginger (Steffel) Hofstetter, Holly, Amber, Joshua, Whitney, and Jeremiah. Great-grandchildren include Conner and Courtney Cotton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Dorothy (Murphy), Ruth (Balzer), and Dolly (Miley), brother William, son Kenneth and daughter Cindy. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 A. M. at the Jefferson United Methodist Church, 125 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery with American Legion Post #103 providing military honors.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 P. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004 or the Jefferson United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 125 E.
