Carl J. Grassi
JEFFERSON - Carl J. Grassi, 87, of East Cedar Street, Jefferson, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, following an extended illness at the Park Haven Nursing Home in Ashtabula, where he has resided the past seven months.
He was born May 18, 1915 in Bellevue, the son of Biagio and Carmella (Lapresti) Grassi. Mr. Grassi had lived in Bellevue all of his life before moving to this area in May.
Mr. Grassi married Beatrice V. Wise, July 20, 1954 in Milan. He was a 30 year employee of both the Nickle Plate and Norfolk and Western railroads, retiring in 1975.
Mr. Grassi was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bellevue. He enjoyed traveling, especially western trips, going for rides in the car and watching television.
Survivors include his wife, a grandson, Roger Jordan, Jr. of Green Springs, four great-grandchildren, a brother, Frank Grassi of Marblehead and two sisters, Angela Blue of Fremont and Mary Schoepflin of Southport, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepson, Roger Jordan, two brothers, Jim and Charles Grassi; and a sister, Annie Scrozelli.
Graveside services will be noon Thursday, at Bellevue Cemetery in Bellevue, with the Rev. Father Robert Tucceri of the Immaculate Conception Church, officiating.
Calling hours are noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson.

Dr. Harold C. Franley
Jefferson - Dr. Harold C. Franley, 82, of West Jefferson Street, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center following a short illness.
He was born July 20, 1919, in Cleveland, the son of Charles and Clara A. (Metzdorf) Franley and had been a Jefferson resident since 1948, coming from Cleveland.
Dr. Franley was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
He graduated from Adelbert College in Cleveland and Western Reserve Medical School.
He was married to Joan Kelly on June 10, 1944, at St. Christopher's by the River Church, Gates Mills.
Dr. Franley started his practice in Jefferson in 1948 and retired in 1982. During his career, he delivered more than 4, 000 babies. He was a 50-year staff member of the Ashtabula County Medical Center and served on the Ashtabula County Medical Center Foundation Board. He also was a 50-year member of the Ohio State Medical Association and the Ohio Academy of Family Practice.
Dr. Franley was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and was involved in the Men's Group. He was a member of the Jefferson Exchange Club and a former member of the Jefferson Rotary. He was a volunteer and board member of the Ashtabula County branch of the American Cancer Society. He also served two terms on the Jefferson Area Local Board of Education.
He served as president of the Ashtabula County Little League, donating land and helping build the first official Little League field in Jefferson behind his home on West Jefferson Street in 1958.
In his honor and because of his dedication, Franley Field was named after him at the new Jefferson Little League complex. He was an "Over the Hill Gang" golfer, loved to play bridge, was an avid Ohio State university football fan, a dedicated Browns' fan, and loved the Cleveland Indians, attending the very first and last baseball games played in Cleveland Municipal Stadium.
Survivors include three children, Douglas K. Franley M.D. of Ashtabula; Deborah K. Franley M.D. of Milan, and Hal C. Franley D.D.S. of Jefferson; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Arlene Jorgenson of Lake Ozark, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Joan, in 1997.
Service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 89 E. Satin St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Fred A. Grimm officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Fleming Funeral Home Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, and from noon until the time of service Wednesday at the church.

Millard O. King
JEFFERSON - Millard O. King, 86, formerly of South Market St., died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Austinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Jan. 16, 1916, in Jefferson, the son of Homer and Mertie (Jones) King.
A resident of Jefferson most of his life, Mr. King lived in Union City, Pa., from 1957 to 1973. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Evelyn M. (Reiser) Dec. 8, 1940, in Cleveland.
Mr. King was a 37-year employee of True Temper Corp., retiring in 1973. Following his retirement he was employed at the Miller Funeral Home, then Fleming Funeral Home in Jefferson.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Jefferson where he was in the Win-A-Couple Class and served as a deacon. While living in Union City he attended First Baptist Church, served as a trustee and deacon and was also a Union City councilman.
Survivors include four children, Robert O. of Union City, Ruth Anne Ahl of Meadville, Pa., Ella Rose Camplese of Ashtabula and Laura J. Hewit of Canton; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1992; three brothers, his twin Willard, Raymond and Chester in infancy.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, 85 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. William L. Offutt officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Fleming Funeral Home Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson.

Helen M. Gaylord
JEFFERSON - Helen M. Gaylord, 95, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Ms. Gaylord was born Jan. 7, 1906, in Duluth, Minn., a daughter of Cora E. (Hart) and Benjamin B. Gaylord.
She was a long-time area resident and lived in Jefferson for the past five years.
Ms. Gaylord was a 1924 Williamsfield High School graduate and assisted her father in operating a general store in West Williamsfield for a number of years.
She also was a librarian in Cleveland for several years and was later a caretaker for her aunt in Ashtabula.
Gaylord was a member and deaconess at the West Williamsfield Congregational Church and was a member of its 55 and over club. She also enjoyed crafting.
Ms. Gaylord was preceded in death by her two brothers, Sidney L. and Paul B. Gaylord. She is survived by Cora Mae Rogers, a niece from Tucson, Ariz.; and two cousins, Gaylord Hart of Andover and Lester Hart of Wayne Township.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover. Burial will follow in Hayes Cemetery in Wayne Township.

William C. Blake
HOLLY, Mich. William C. Blake, 58, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Blake was born Sept. 9, 1942, in Conneaut, the son of William and Nellie (Langell) Blake.
He was a vice president of American Construction of Southfield and was formerly with the Austin Company of Cleveland.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; a daughter, Tammy Ward of Madison; a son Bill Blake of Madison; seven grandchildren, Bart, Phillip and Ryan Ward, Melissa and Reanna Blake, and Aleesha and Shawn Sprafka; two sisters, Rhea Riley of Colorado; and Ruth Gifford of Illinois; and a brother, Dan Sarka of Ohio.
A funeral service was held Jan. 27 at the Holly Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jack Craft officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Feb. 3 in Lulu Falls Cemetery in Kingsville.

Elina (Elaine) M. Bell
SEBRING, FL - Elina (Elaine) M. Bell, 74, of Sebring, FL, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2003, in Sebring.
Born December 15, 1928 in Conneaut, she was the daughter of Thomas and Ida (Sippola) Golden. She has been a resident of Sebring since 1981, coming from North Kingsville.
She was a homemaker, and avid fisherwoman, and a Pentecostal by faith.
Survivors include her husband, James W. Bell of Sebring; two sons, James W. Bell, Jr. of Sebring, and Larry Gene Bell of North Kingsville; one brother, Richard Golden of Ashtabula; two grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marjorie Luce; and brother, Edward Lawrence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 31, 2003, at 1:30 p.m., graveside at Bougainvillea Cemetery, Avon Park, FL, with Rev. James Coates officiating.
Visitation with family will be held one hour prior to service time, at 12:30 p.m. at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home, 4001 Sebring Parkway, Sebring, FL 33870.
