Ralph E. Curie
JEFFERSON - Ralph E. Curie, 83, of St. Rt. 46 South, Jefferson, died unexpectedly in the early morning hours on Saturday at his residence.
He was born September 14, 1920, in Jefferson, the son of Charles J. & Della M. (Swickard) Curie, and has been a Jefferson resident all of his life, wintering in Mt. Dora, Fla., the past 12 years. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Ohio State University. Mr. Curie was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Gen. Omar Bradley's headquarters in London, France and Germany during World War II.
Mr. Curie was a teacher and superintendent in the Pierpont Schools from 1946-53, served as Edgewood High School principal from 1953-58 and superintendent for Buckeye Local School System from 1959-69, and served as Jefferson Elementary School principal from 1969 until his retirement in 1982.
He was a member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, the Jefferson Rotary Club and served on the Kent State University College Committee. He was a master carpenter, learning the trade from his father, building his home the couple lived in the past 58 years. Mr. Curie was an excellent husband, superb father and grandfather, lived to extremely high standards and encouraged all around him to strive to do their very best, as he did by example.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine E. "Jo" (Corkrean) Curie, whom he married on November 14, 1942, in Jefferson; two sons, Edward R. (Valori) Curie and Dr. Charles A. Curie, both of Jefferson; six grandchildren, Paul Curie of Jefferson, Camie Easton of New Lyme Twp., Carrie Curie-Ross of Kansas City, KS., Vanessa, Elizabeth and Andy Curie, all of Jefferson; four great-grandchildren, Kyle, Legend, Kalie and Phia; and a brother, Dr. C. Lyle Curie in Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathleen, at birth; and a brother, Robert V. Curie.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at the Jefferson United Methodist Church, 125 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of the church and the Rev. Fr. Stephen Wassie, of St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 5-8 PM at the Fleming Funeral Home, Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson. The family requests memorial contributions to the Jefferson Rotary Club Scholarship Fund; envelopes will be at the funeral home.
Robert J. Hall

JEFFERSON - Robert J. Hall, age 87 of Cornerwood Dr. Jefferson, Ohio, died Monday, September 17, 2007 at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was born October 20, 1919 in Plymouth Township the son of Emmett J. and Elsie (Fulmer) Hall and has been a lifetime area resident. He is a Veteran of the Army serving in the European Theater of Operation during World War 2, where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He received a Purple Heart with one Bronze Cluster. He was still a member of the Society of the Fifth Division.
He had been employed with Burnell Foam in Jefferson and had worked for over twenty five years at Geneva Metal Wheel.
He enjoyed woodworking, farming, the wild life, traveling and camping and he enjoyed the covered bridges in Ashtabula County. He was fond of his dog “Sparky”.
Surviving him are two daughters, June E. (Larry) Cartner and Ruth L. (Charles) Judson, both of Jefferson; a son, James A. Hall of Cleveland; five grandchildren, Todd and Nolan Cartner, Carrie Lyerly, Kimberly Travers and Denise Hall; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth Miller of Geneva.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Louise F. Hall in 1987; his second wife, Phyllis Bailes Hall in 2005; two brothers, Clifford and Donald Hall; and a sister, Alice Scott.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., today, Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the Jefferson Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 West Jefferson St. Jefferson, Ohio, with Pastor Michael Williams of the Lenox Federated Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Calling Hours were held on Wednesday (yesterday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

David W. Porter
JEFFERSON – David W. Porter, 71, of Maple Road died Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was born July 6, 1938 in Greenville, PA., the son of Samuel G. and Martha (Bates) Porter and had been a long-time area resident.
He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1956 and was employed with Rockwell Brake, retiring after 25 years of service. His lifelong passion for cars and racing began at an early age. He began racing quarter midgets at the age of 8 and continued racing karts, motorcycles and midget cars into his early twenties. Dave was an impressive metal fabricator and enjoyed building street rods and custom cars. He was a past member of the National Hot Rod Association, National Street Rod Association, and Kustom Kemps of America. His other interests included model airplanes, reading, watching the history channel, Jay Leno, David Letterman, and speed tv. He above all enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Porter, whom he married May 28, 1960; his children, Lisa (Jeff) Gildersleeve and Russell Porter, both of Jefferson; grandchildren, Michael (Audrey) Meredith, Kimberly (Randy Williams) Meredith, Robert Hanft, and Tyler Porter; 3 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ethel Berg of Painesville and Joyce (Jack) Martin of Jamestown, PA.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Samuel, mother Martha, and stepmother Delma.
A celebration of life will be held on August 2nd from 2:00pm-5:00pm at Fischer’s Pine Lake, Maple Rd, Jefferson, Ohio.
No calling hours will be observed.

Arthur “Art” W. Allen
JEFFERSON - Arthur W. “Art”’ Allen, 88, passed away on December 24, 2007 at his home.
He was born on February 11th, 1919 in Dorset, the son of Arthur A. and Pearl (Prentice) Allen.
He joined the military on January 27, 1942, for the Army Air Corp. He served as an airplane bomber mechanic and ground crew chief of the Air Force mostly in Australia and New Zealand. He received awards such as the Unit Citation Badge and also received four stars, two for Philippine Liberation and two for the Asiatic-Pacific medal.
On November 24, 1946, he married the love of his life, Alice R. (Clark) Allen. They had five children and also ran a successful family business, known as The Allen Lumber Company, until retirement. Arthur was a Sunday School Superintendent for many years with the Eagleville Bible Church and also served as a Trustee and Deacon of the church. He was also the President of the Ashtabula Organ Society for several years. His hobbies included racecar driving, playing golf, boating, camping, hunting, football, baseball, music, and dancing. Most of all, he loved his family, many friends, and the Lord.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 61 years Alice (Clark) Allen; two daughters, Kathleen A. Allen and Susan A. Allen; sons, Joel A. (Gaye) Allen, Thomas L. (Susan) Allen, and James A. Allen; a sister, Mildred McCoy, three grandchildren, Leeanne R. Blevins, Jason Kull, and James Kull; his nieces Judy Laitinen, Roberta Watson, Jane Stoneman, Joyce Sedlak, Jeane Corey, June Spiker, Dawn Csepegi, and Susan McCoy; five nephews, Jim Mason, David Laitinen, Rick Laitinen, Terry McCoy, and Christopher Clark; and also a number of great-grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephews all of whom he loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters, Vera Mason, Frieda Foster, and Inez Laitinen; a niece, Janice Mason-Crabtree, and a nephew, Lloyd Clark.
Services will be held 1:30 PM at Eagleville Bible Church on Saturday, December 29, 2007. Associate Pastor Chris Christian will officiate. Burial will be in Dorset Cemetery with full military honors.
Calling hours will be held from 12PM until 1:30PM at the church.

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP - Allen M. "Al-Po" Pochedly, 54, Griggs Road, Jefferson Township, died Thursday evening from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Sheffield township. JEFFERSON - Mildred A. Haines, 86, formerly of West Erie St., died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at the Jefferson Geriatric Center.

Carl A. Anderson
DORSET - Carl Arthur "Junior" Anderson, 76, of Footville-Richmond Road, died Friday, August 1, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.
He was born on June 3, 1927 in Denmark Township, the son of Carl John Peter and Mildred (Housel) Anderson and had been a lifelong Ashtabula County resident.
Prior to his retirement, he worked 28 years for True Temper, retiring as Shipping Supervisor.
A Veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Allene (Evans), whom he married on March 17, 1962; three daughters, Linda (husband Mark) Fogus, and Brenda (husband Steve) Lautanen, both of Dorset, and Kathy (husband George) Wight of Clearwater, FL; one son, Dale Thompson of Linesville, PA; 7 grandchildren, Timothy and Daniel Shoby, Thomas and Jessica Wight, Joshua and Haley Thompson, and Jacob Fogus; one great-granddaughter, Bernice Shoby; one sister, Clarice Franklin of San Antonio, TX; and one brother, Larry Anderson of Santa Anna, CA.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Norman Anderson; three sisters, Donna Piper, Arlene Easton, and Diane Anderson (in infancy); and his parents.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Monday, August 4, 2003, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the family home at 4028 Footville-Richmond Road, Dorset. At his request, no services will be held.
