William R. Nye
HARTSGROVE TOWNSHIP - William Robert Nye, 78, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Blossom Hill Care Center, Huntsburg.
He was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Hartsgrove Township, to Robert Eugene and Clara (Kampf) Nye.
Mr. Nye was a lifelong area farmer. He married Joanne White July 1, 1961, in Cleveland Heights.
He was a member of Hartsgrove Community Church, a 50-year member of Hartsgrove Grange, a 25-year Hartsgrove township trustee with many years as chairman, and a former vice president and member of the Ashtabula County Trustees Association. He was also a past member of the Agricultural Stabilization Committee, past president and member of the Ashtabula County Farm Bureau and a past recipient of Conservation Farmer of the Year. He was the 1991 recipient of the Farm Bureau's Distinguished Service Award to Agriculture.
Mr. Nye enjoyed his family, travel adventures and community service.
Survivors include his wife; sons William Jr. and David of Hartsgrove Township and Charles of Westlake; daughter Sarah Pick of Indianapolis, Ind.; sisters Cynthia Marsh of Orwell, Mary Fuller of Hartsgrove Township and Elizabeth Holmes of Mill Valley, Calif.; brother J. Perry Nye of Hartsgrove Township; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Hartsgrove Community Church, 5260 Route 6, Hartsgrove Township, officiated by the Rev. Paul Sundburg. Internment is at the Hartsgrove Center Cemetery.
Visitation is 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, at Paine-Simpson Funeral Home, 140 E. Main St., Orwell.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hartsgrove Community Church.
Elizabeth W. Strauss
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio - Elizabeth W. Strauss, 86, died Aug. 15, 2002, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Mayfield Heights.
Born Oct. 23, 1915, in Canton, she was the daughter of Alex and Sophia (Horvath) Toth.
Mrs. Strauss was self-employed as an interior decorator with her husband.
A 60-year resident of Cleveland Heights, she was a graduate of Cleveland Heights High School and the Cleveland Institute of Art.
She partnered with George Strauss for 40 years and was married to him for eight years.
Mrs. Strauss enjoyed antiques, nature, birds, trees, mountains, gardening, reading and history. She also enjoyed traveling to the Adirondack Mountains in New York; visited Finland, England, Germany, Canada and Peru; and enjoyed snowmobiling in Wyoming and Colorado.
Survivors include two friends, Gundaga Lojek and Margaret Bakale
She was preceded in death by her parents; her adoptive parents, John F. and Grace (Chester) Wagner; her husband, on March 18, 1979; and two brothers.
Service is 10 a.m. Saturday at the grave site at All Souls Cemetery, Chardon Township, with The Rev. Gregory Fedor of St. Mary Church, Orwell, officiating.
No calling hours will be observed.

Sally J. Zygmunt
GLENDALE, Ariz. - Sally J. Zygmunt, 53, Glendale, Ariz., died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000.
Born July 30, 1947, in Ohio, she moved to Arizona in 1971.
Mrs. Zygmunt was a 1965 graduate of Grand Valley High School in Orwell and also attended Kent State University.
She was a teacher's aide in the Phoenix, Ariz., school system and a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, James of Glendale; two sons: Jeff of Glendale and Jimmy of Phoenix; her mother, Lois "Jean" Andronico of Phoenix; one sister, Gay Krieg of Phoenix; and five grandchildren.
Calling hours were held at Sunland Mortuary, 15826 Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, on Oct. 27. Service was at St. Raphael's Catholic Church Oct. 28.

Barbara L. Bogun
ROCK CREEK - Barbara L. Bogun, 55, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Orwell Township. She was born Dec. 15, 1946 in Euclid, the daughter of Forrest O. and Laurel (Landis) Thorpe.
She graduated from Euclid High School and attended Southington Baptist Church. She worked as a house mother for a handicap health care service.
She was a member of four computer prayer chains and a strong supporter of the Salvation Army. She enjoyed clothing design, sewing, crafting, reading, collecting angels and collecting cookie jars.
She also enjoyed morning doves at her home and especially enjoyed her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, David W. Bogun, whom she married on June 18, 1970, two daughters, Bonnie Siembieta of Orlando, Fla. and Diana Roth of Orwell; two sons, Benjamin and David Bogun of Orwell; two brothers, Richard Thorpe of Los Angeles and Robert Thorpe of Euclid; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the Chapel in Union Cemetery in Rock Creek, with Pastor Rocky Tilson of the Southington Baptist Church, officiating.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, at the Paine-Simpson Funeral Home, 3119 West Water St., Rock Creek.
Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Rock Creek.

Gertrude M. Sawicki
WINDSOR TOWNSHIP - Gertrude M. Sawicki, 78, formerly of Colebrook Township, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Grand Valley Country Manor, Windsor Township.
Born June 22, 1922, in Halle (Saale), Germany, she was a daughter of Ernst Otto and Anna Martha (Liebe) Hentze.
She worked as an inspector at Kennametal for 15 years. She was a member of St. Mary Church, Orwell, and the American Legion Auxiliary, Memorial Unit 719, Orwell.
She enjoyed traveling, sewing, knitting and reading.
Survivors include two daughters, Rosemarie M. Thompson and Edeltraud E. Distler of Germany; four sons, Werner S. of Chandler, Ariz., John J. of Cleveland, Klaus P. of Smithville, Texas, and Thomas M. of Colebrook Township; four grandchildren; and several brothers and sisters in Germany.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stanley F.; and several brothers and sisters in Germany.
Graveside service is 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Colebrook North Cemetery, Fee Road. The Rev. Gregory Fedor, of St. Mary Church, will officiate.

Bernice C. Mendenhall
ORWELL - Bernice C. Mendenhall, 88, of Orwell for 17 years, formally of Mentor, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Geauga Hospital in Claridon Township.
She was born on November 1, 1914, in Belfast, N.Y.
Mrs. Mendenhall was a homemaker, active in the girl scouts, Volunteers of America, taught ceramics and enjoyed crafts.
Survivors include two sons, George Gunnerman of Georgia and Richard (fiancé Angela Duncan) Mendenhall, of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Elizabeth (Douglas) Merrell of Rome, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jessica, Tina and Stephen; one great- granddaughter, Mackenzie; and two sisters, Almeda (Del) Smith of Euclid and Ruth Ledwith of Orwell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carrol Harrison Mendenhall; three brothers, Norm, Ed and George Hotchkiss; and three sisters, Ruthie, Mae and Berdella.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the Brunner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Margaret M. Kroege
ORWELL - Margaret M. (Peg) Kroeger, 88, of Orwell died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at Ashtabula County Nursing Home, Kingsville.
She was born Sept. 22, 1913 in Denmark, the daughter of John W. and Anna Ruth (Lillie) Lynagh.
Mrs. Kroeger was a homemaker.
Survivors include her brothers, Homer J. Lynagh of Ashtabula, Arden B. Lynagh of Pierpont and D. Lee Lynagh of Delaware.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin E. (Bud) Kroeger on Nov. 24, 1999; sisters, Johanna Cox, Ruth Lynagh, Naomi Hayford and Ardys Anthony; and a brother, James Lynagh.
Services will be 2:30 p.m., Monday at the graveside in Orwell South Cemetery, Moore Road, Orwell.
There will be no calling hours observed.
