Howard I. Andrus
AUSTINBURG – Howard Ira Andrus, 79, formerly of Saybrook Township died Sunday, February 1, 2009 at the Austinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born October 19, 1929 in Ashtabula, the son of Ernest and Anna (Bowen) Andrus and had been a lifelong Ashtabula resident.
A 1949 graduate of Ashtabula High School, he worked on the family farm on Ninevah Road and then as a pipefitter for East Ohio Gas Company before his retirement.
On May 25, 1979, he married Darlene K. Woodworth at the Saybrook United Methodist Church, where he had been a member.
A former member of the Moose Lodge and the V.F.W., he loved to dance and attended dances at these organizations regularly. He also loved antique cars and was especially proud of his 1932 pink Packard Convertible.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene, of Austinburg.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Gordon Andrus; and his parents.
A calling hour will be from 11 to 12 on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at the Zaback-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula. A service will follow at 12 Noon with Rev. Shirley Deemer, Pastor of Mentor Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in Saybrook Cemetery.

Abbie J. Pacholke, 76 of Lenox-New Lyme Rd., Jefferson died Sunday (August 12th) at her home. She was born August 23, 1935 in Cleveland the daughter of Anthony and Angela (Gagliardo) Schiavoni and has been an area resident since 1960.
She had been a cook and had worked at Con Lea Nursing Home in Geneva, Jefferson Geriatric, and Austinburg Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
She is a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Geneva. She enjoys reading her Bible; gardening; her flowers and spending time with her grandchildren. Her dog “Coco” was her close companion.
Surviving her is her husband, Wayne; two sons, Duane (Karen) Pacholke of Rock Creek and Brett (Teresa) Pacholke of Morgan Township; three daughters, Robin Cowell of Jefferson, Brandy (Brian) Carroll with whom she made her home and Candy (Lester) Gordon of Tallmadge; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three brothers, Orlando Schiavoni of Willoughby Hills, Anthony Schiavoni of Wisconsin and Dominick Vaccariello of Madison and two sisters, Sandra Sacash of Myrtle Beach and Carmela Patchin of Painesville. She was preceded in death by her parents ; by a son Shane Allen Pacholke in 1974 and by a brother, Chuck Schiavoni.
Funeral services will be Thursday (August 16th) at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 811 South Broadway, Geneva, Ohio with Pastor Jonathan Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in Mechanicsville Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Wednesday (August 15th) from 6 to 8 PM at the Geneva Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 323 South Broadway, Geneva, Ohio and on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Richard A. Sasala

Richard A. Sasala, age 85, S. Elm St., Jefferson, died Friday morning in the loving arms of his family at the Jefferson Healthcare Center. He had been a patient there the past 19 months.
He was born March 28, 1927 in Cleveland, the son of Stephen & Margaret (Duch) Sasala and has lived in the Jefferson area since 1948, coming from Cleveland. Mr. Sasala was a graduate of Cleveland Hts. High School and attended Ohio State University. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Force, serving in World War II and always talked about his service time in Garmish, Germany and was pleased when his son visited there this summer. Mr. Sasala farmed for many years raising Ayshire cattle and breeding border collies for which he won 1st place at the Ashtabula Co. Fair. He also worked at Ashtabula Bow Socket for 20 years, retiring in 1982. He then worked several summers with the Ashtabula Co. Engineers office on the covered bridge projects.
He is a member of St. Joseph Calasanctius Church where he served as an adult acolyte, on Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister enjoying taking communion to the home bound. He was a proud charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4212, serving as treasurer for many years and proud member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Sir Leo J. Kane Assembly, serving as faithful navigator. His hobbies included model trains, listening to music, especially classical, making maple syrup, spending time in his woods and most of all spending time with his friends and family, especially his nine grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, R. Joyce (Zimmerman) Sasala, whom he married on August 22, 1959 at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, five children, Dr. Stephen Sasala of Parma, Mary Beth (Gary) Simpkins of Tucson, AZ, Carol Sasala of Cleveland, Dr. Richard (Nancy) Sasala of Toledo & Mark (Rosemary) Sasala of Pittsburgh, PA and nine grandchildren, Ann, Andrew, Matthew, Lauren, Daniel, Erin, Gabriel, Christian & Xavier Sasala.
His parents and two brothers, Raymond & Dr. James Sasala preceded him in death.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the nurses and aids of A-wing at the Jefferson Healthcare, as well as Tridia Hospice for their loving care.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A. M. Wednesday at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, 32 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Fr. Charles Poore officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery where Geneva Post #6846 of the V. F. W. will offer full military honors.

Samantha H. Erxleben

Samantha H. “Samie” Erxleben, age 56, W. Riverview, Austinburg Twp., died peacefully late Monday evening at her residence.
She was born September 20, 1955 in Cleveland, the adopted daughter of William & Helen Erxleben and has lived much of her life in Lake & Ashtabula Counties.
Samie attended the Austinburg First United Church of Christ. She enjoyed relaxing on her patio on the river and cruising her pontoon boat on Roaming Shores Lake. She loved animals of all kinds.
Samie was her son’s absolute best friend. She was extremely kindhearted and she made friends everywhere she went. In the past decade, Samie found her soul mate and partner for life. More than anything she loved her cat, Tabby. All of Samie’s friends and next door neighbors were also like family to her. She lived her life with happiness, love and fun. The sun will shine a little less brightly without Samie here on earth. She was truly loved and will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her adoptive parents and her cousin, Bill Schlegel.
Survivors include her son, Gregory L. Dassel of Roaming Shores, her partner, R. B. Grampp of Austinburg, Tabby the cat, a brother, Mark (Barb) Gerken and their three children & a cousin, Heather Schlegel and her two daughters.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A. M. Tuesday at the Austinburg First United Church of Christ, St. Rt. 307, Austinburg, with the Rev. Allison Milligan officiating. Burial will be in Mechanicsville Cemetery. A celebration of life for Samie will follow the committal services at Hunter’s Inn, 4518 Footville-Richmond Rd. in E. Trumbull.
Calling hours will be held Monday from 5-9 P. M. and Tuesday form 9:30-10:30 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson. Virginia M. Hennigan

Virginia M. Hennigan, age 86, a resident of the Sanctuary in Geneva died peacefully Tuesday morning at her son’s home in Austinburg Twp.
She was born May 23, 1926 in Ashtabula, the daughter of Frank & Ruth (Bisbee) Babcock and has resided in this area most of her life. She was a 1944 graduate of Edgewood High School and was valedictorian of her class. Virginia married Francis E. Hennigan on July 7, 1951 in Ashtabula.
Mrs. Hennigan worked at Carlisle’s Dept. Store in housewares for many years. She was a great cook and loved music and pets. The Hennigan’s were great supporters of the Edgewood Music Boosters working “Buckeye Boo” & “Buckeye Bash” for many years. She enjoyed bingo, volleyball, bowling and gardening. Her family was her life and her focus.
Survivors include three children, Karin Sue (Rick Goldsmith) Hennigan of Brantingham, NY, Dennis M. Hennigan of Ashtabula & Daniel L. (Elly) Hennigan of Austinburg Twp., four grandchildren, Michelle Hennigan Gillespie of Ashtabula, Melissa (Ricky) Furman & Corey Hennigan, both of Jefferson & Mark Hennigan of Cleveland, six great-grandchildren, Madeline, Mason, Joshua, Brandon, Danielle & Mark and a sister, Jeannette (Ron) Ball of Concord Twp.
Her parents and her husband, Francis in 2010 preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 A. M. at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 526 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of the Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.

Margaret A. Skidmore, 85, of Jefferson, died at the hospice unit of the Ashtabula Medical Center on Wednesday morning.
She was born April 6, 1927 in Herbert, Pa., the daughter of George & Sophia (Yaworsky)Kelner. She was married on July 25, 1953 to Charles J. Skidmore at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church. She has been a resident of the Jefferson area since 1932.
She retired from Society National Bank as a head teller working for 17 years, previously worked for State of Ohio, division of aid for aging for nine years, also for Hamilton’s Furniture and Laskin Greenhouse.
Survivors include her son, Timothy (Vanessa) Skidmore of Jefferson, and a daughter, Louise (Rick) Cape of Pinnacle, North Carolina, and one granddaughter, Marie Skidmore of Jefferson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chas. Joseph in 2008, her parents, sons David and Anthony at birth, step-granddaughter, Heather Armstrong, three brothers, Frank, Edward & William Kelner, sisters, Josephine Ewing, Irene Lazanis, Mary Ewing, Helen Blatnica and Stella Sheffeo.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 16th at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, 32 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Father Charles Poore officiating.
