Alvis E. Seckler
JOHNSTON TOWNSHIP - Alvis E. "Mike" Seckler, 82, of Stoddard-Hayes Road, Johnston Township, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at the St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.
He was born Aug. 27, 1918, in Johnston Township, the son of Malcolm and Edith Mae (Beatty) Seckler, and was a lifelong township resident.
He retired from the former Warren Aluminum Products Co., where he worked more than 20 years at a screener.
He married the former Margaret M. McKay on June 30, 1956.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, woodworking and doing handyman chores for neighbors and friends.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Edith M. Lynch of Johnston Township, and Jennie I. Proper, of Vienna; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Irene Brown, Helen Gates and Vera Seckler; and three brothers, Vern, Howard and Donn Seckler.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover. Cremation will follow.
There will be no funeral service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Catherine C. Miller
JOHNSTON TOWNSHIP - Catherine C. Miller, 74, 7450 Stoddard Hayes Road, Johnston Township, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.
She was born April 12, 1927, in Glen Ferris, W. Va., a daughter of Grafton and Julia (Hogg) Hypes. Formerly of Canton, Mrs. Miller had been a resident of Johnston for a short time.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family, playing the guitar and sewing. She attended the Fair Hope Presbyterian Church in Canton.
She is survived by five daughters, Shirley A. Rogos of Johnston, Karen S. Price of Canton, Mich., Joyce E. Tarr of New Boston, Mich., Connie L. Kirkland of Mentor and Renee Yocco of Canton; one son, Michael J. Messina of Amsterdam; one sister, Camilla Byrd of Lizemore, W. Va.; two brothers; Dale Hypes of Lizemore, W. Va., and Daniel Hypes of Robertsville; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St., Kinsman. Burial will be in Johnston Township Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad St., Canfield 44406.

James F. Culver
JOHNSTON TOWNSHIP - James F. Culver, 76, of Warner Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown.
He was born Oct. 24, 1924, in Warren, the son of Fred and Lela (Burlingham) Culver.
Mr. Culver was a lifelong resident and was an electrician for Van Huffel Sheet and Tube in Warren for 32 years, retiring in 1977.
He married Betty L. (Fairchild) on Jan. 23, 1946.
He later owned and operated Culver Electric for many years.
Mr. Culver was a World War II veteran, having serving in U.S. Army in the European Theater. He served in the battles at Normandy, the Ardennes, Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe.
He was a member of the Johnston Federated Church, a lifelong member of the Bailey-Barto Veterans of Foreign War Post 7614, Johnston; a member of the Cortland Moose Lodge and an associate member of the Johnston Fire Department.
Mr. Culver enjoyed bowling, playing cards, doing jigsaw puzzles and hunting in his earlier years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sandra R. Butler of Johnston Township and Ethel L. Bidinotto of Vernon Township; a son, Ronald J. of Johnston Township; a sister, Margaret Goldner of Cortland; a brother, Richard of Leavittsburg; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gladys Young; and two brothers, Clarence and Milton.
Service is 11 a.m. Friday at the Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St., Kinsman. Burial will be in Johnston Cemetery.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Thomas G. Roach
CORTLAND - Thomas G. Roach, 65, of North High Street, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at his home.
He was born Oct. 6, 1935, at Eagle Bend, Minn., the son of Jess E. and Martha (Gould) Roach. He moved to the Cortland area in 1959.
An Army veteran, he was a 1953 graduate of Eagle Bend High School, and in 1959 earned a degree in psychology and social science from St. Cloud State College, St. Cloud, Minn.
He worked as a job counselor for the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services, retiring in 1999 after 30 years of service.
He was a member of the Mahoning Valley wood-carving club and was club treasurer. He also was a member of the National Model Railroad Association. In his leisure time he enjoyed target shooting.
He married the former Patrician Crain on Nov. 6, 1959.
Survivors include a son, Michael Roach of Conneaut; a daughter, Barbara Sandrock of Cortland; a brother, Dan Roach of St. Cloud, Minn.; a sister, Cynthia Haack of Charlotte, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, on Nov. 16, 1999.
Memorial service is 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Peter Rossi and Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road, N.E., Warren.
Calling time will be held at the funeral home one hour before Wednesday's service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association of Northeast Ohio, 225 W. Exchange St., Akron, 44302.

Marian M. Lucha
CORTLAND - Marian Margret Lucha, 91, of Phillips Rice Road in Cortland, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in San Antonio.
She was born April 15, 1911, in Cleveland, the daughter of William A. and Elizabeth A. (O'Brien) Moeller. She moved to the Cortland area one year ago from Ashtabula, where she had lived 56 years.
She was a homemaker and, after her family was raised, worked 15 years as a practical nurse at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
She married Emanuel W. Lucha on Oct. 27, 1933.
She was a member of St. Robert Catholic Church in Cortland and previously had been a member of St. Joseph Church in Ashtabula. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Austinburg, MFC Club and Grange 1607, and enjoyed reading, vacations, playing games and spending time with family.
Survivors include a son, Don Lucha of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a daughter, Carol Gladd of Mecca; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emanuel, in 1982; a sister, Charlotte Soeder; a brother, William Moeller; and a grandchild, Randolph Palm.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Shafer-Winans and Lamer Funeral Home, 164 N. High St., Cortland. Burial will be at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of service, at the funeral home.

Frank A. Whitmore
CORTLAND - Frank Arthur Whitmore, 85, of Warren-Meadville Road, Cortland, Johnston Township, died Wednesday morning, April 10, 2002, at his home.
He was born April 6, 1917, in Sharon, Pa., the son of William and Bessie Brown Whitmore McClearn, and moved to Johnstown Township from Gustavus 44 years ago.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He was a foreman at Brainard Strapping for 35 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of the Johnston Federated United Methodist Church, and had served as a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed art, music and growing flowers.
Survivors include his wife, the former Elizabeth Lahner, whom he married Nov. 2, 1938; three daughters, Madena Hollis of Andover, Janice Allen of Erie, and Sherry Parks of Warren; two sons, Budd Whitmore of Salem, and James Whitmore of Warren; a granddaughter, Heather Whitmore; a half-brother, Robert McClearn of Farmington; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence, James and Walter Whitmore; and a half-brother, John McClearn.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Shafer-Winans and Lamer Funeral Home, 164 N. High St., Cortland. Burial will be at Johnston Township Cemetery.
Calling hours are 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Richard Belew
CORTLAND - Richard Belew, 76, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at St. Joseph Health Center, Warren.
He was born Dec. 20, 1925, in Clayborne County, Tenn., to Lewis and Adleine (Bowman) Belew. He was a former Madison and Howland resident, living in Cortland since 1971. He married Mirtie Jo Clutter Oct. 5, 1962.
Mr. Belew was a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater.
He was an ironworker for the former Elwin Smith Co. in Pittsburgh for more than 25 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Iron Workers Local 17.
Mr. Belew enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife; daughters Joan Barton and Patsy Moyers, both of Middlesboro, Ky.; stepsons Dewey Cutlip of Burghill, Bill Cutlip of Painesville and Robert Cutlip of Galivats Ferry, S.C.; a sister, Myrtle Queener of La Follette, Tenn.; five brothers, James Belew and Ben Belew, both of Knoxville, Tenn., and Bill Belew and Jake Belew, both of Duff, Tenn., and Marion York of Cleveland; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Della Hatfield and Viola York.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St., Kinsman, officiated by the Rev. Steven W. Trimble. Military services and burial will follow in West View Cemetery, Vernon.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
