Florence L. Armstrong
MECCA TOWNSHIP - Florence Lucille (Poling) Armstrong, 68, of Greenville Road, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was born Oct. 3, 1933, in Ashtabula, to Ernest C. and Katherine B. (Spencer) Poling.
She was a 1951 graduate of Williamsfield High School. She married Charles Armstrong June 26, 1955, in Williamsfield Methodist Church.
Mrs. Armstrong was a homemaker and secretary for her husband's business, C.W. Armstrong Inc., for 31 years.
She was a member of the Mecca Community Church and vice president of her local women's Aglow group at church. She enjoyed sewing, traveling, square dancing, Bible studies and her grandchildren.
Survivors include sons Randy C. Armstrong and Dean A. Armstrong, both of Mecca Township; a daughter, Connie Lucille Lafon of Knoxville, Tenn.; sisters Helen Eagle of Youngstown, Marian Friedrich of Jefferson and Doris Simon of Andover; and grandchildren Shannon, Derek and Ashley Armstrong, Alexia and David Battaly, and Joel, Paige and Hallie Lafon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her sister Edith Poling.
Services were July 26, and burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Cortland. Arrangements were handled by the Shaffer-Winans Funeral Home, Cortland.
Gertrude A. Vail
MECCA - Gertrude A. Vail (Franks), 65, of Mecca, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 3:31 p.m. at her residence.
She was born January 2, 1938, in Merritstown, PA, the daughter of Norman Franks and Sara Higgenbottom. She was a lifetime resident of the Mecca area.
Mrs. Vail was a self-employed homemaker and was a woman who enjoyed family functions. Spending time with her family and her grandchildren is what she enjoyed most.
She was married to Norman Vail on August 31, 1973.
Survivors include her husband, Norman; two sons, Edward (Diana) Thomas of Niles, and David (Melissa) Thomas of Jefferson; one daughter, Dorothy (Harold) Stewart of Cortland; two brothers, Clint Franks of New Jersey and Dwayne Franks of PA.; seven grandchildren, Eddie & Melissa Thomas of Niles, Brandon Stewart of Cortland, Cody & Tyler Thomas of Jefferson, Lori Poponack of Cortland, and Renzo Thomas of Cortland; two great-grandchildren, Brianna Stewart of Cortland and Kyle Poponack of Cortland.
Mrs. Vail is also survived by her best friend, whom she loved like a sister, Judy Rudkin of Kinsman. She has known Judy most of her life (since they were teenagers). They enjoyed spending time with each other's families, shopping and have always been there for each other. Throughout the years, each has helped the other through so many days of happiness and sadness.
Mrs. Vail was preceded in death by four brothers, Norman, Delbert, George and Paul Franks; also by two sisters, Norma Huntley and Judy Redmond.
Visitation will be held at Shafer-Winans & Lamer Funeral Home in Cortland, OH, on Tuesday, June 10, 2003, from 6 p.m.8 p.m.
Services are June 11, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Shafer-Winans & Lamer Funeral Home in Cortland, OH.
Place of Interment will be Hillside Cemetery, Cortland, OH.
Gary L. Smith
HOWLAND TOWNSHIP - Gary L. Smith, 58, of 1311 Patchen Ave. SE, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001 at University Hospital in Cleveland following a lengthy illness.
He was born Dec. 29, 1942, in Altoona, Pa., to George W. and Hazel (Clemens) Smith. He married Erika Blum May 1, 1965. He is a lifetime area resident.
Mr. Smith graduated from Conneaut High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps four years.
He was a press operator for 26 years at Brainard Strapping in Warren, retiring in 1990. Following that, he was a press operator for Oxford Automotive in Masury for eight years. He was also a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician for the Howland Township Fire Dept. for 34 years, serving as a lieutenant for 12.
Mr. Smith was formerly a counselor for the Trumbull County Junior Fire-setters, keeping that position 10 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Warren.
Survivors include wife Erika; daughters Lisa Smith of Warren and Heidi Smith of Niles; brother George Smith of Ashtabula; sister Merrie Ann Burns of New Waterford; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Corina Lynn Smith and one granddaughter.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Robert H. Roberts - Clark Memorial Home, Warren. Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and an hour before the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial is in Pineview Memorial Park.
Donations may be made to the Memorial Fund at St. Pauls Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
Georgenia Cibella
MCDONALD - Georgenia Cibella, 84, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Autumn Hills Care Center, Niles.
She was born June 26, 1916, in Argentina, the daughter of George and Anna (Strizin) Siberia, and had lived in Warren most of her life before moving to McDonald in 1973.
A member of Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church, Warren, and the Orthodox Woman's Romanian Club of Niles, she enjoyed crocheting, baking and flower gardening.
She had worked at the Kmart on Parkman Road in the Trumbull Plaza.
Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Baboi of Geneva and Dianna Hordobet of McDonald; a son, Vincent of Leavittsburg; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank, on Jan. 6; two sisters, Victoria Miholovich, Anna Sanko; two brothers, Victor and George Siberia; and a granddaughter.
Funeral is 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church, 1836 North Road NE, Warren. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road in Warren and one hour prior to Monday's service at the church. Saracusta Service will take place at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Ruth P. Saunders
GIRARD - M. Ruth Saunders, 87, of Honeybrook Ct., Girard, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at St. Vincent Health Center.6_17_Saunders_eps_
Born February 26, 1916, in Harrison, a daughter of the late Chester D. and Edna Milhorn Patterson.
She was raised and educated in Greenville, PA, graduating from the Greenville High School. She later graduated from the Cleveland Bible College (now Malone College). She became a minister and ordained Elder in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1939 (now Alleghany Wesleyan Methodist Connection). She and her husband were ministers in Niles from 1939 to 1940, and later Greenville, Greenwood and New Salem Charge. They moved to Sierra Leone, West Africa, where she served as a missionary and pastor for 15 years. Upon returning to the U.S., she assisted her husband as pastor of the Greenwood Wesleyan Methodist Church for twelve years.
She was a member of the Conneaut Wesleyan Methodist Church, where she remained very active as Missionary President, Sunday school teacher, organist, Class leader, member of the Young Missionary workers Band, and president of the Women's Missionary Society.
She received her master's degree in education from Edinboro University. She taught elementary school at Greenfield and West Fallowfield elementary schools. She enjoyed sewing and reading.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Louise Kelch and her husband, Niles, of Girard; Esther J. Williams and her husband, David, of Lake City; a brother, Ralph E. Patterson of Greenville; seven grandchildren, Ruth Ann Lloyd, Nancy D. Proske, Lisa J. Pieri, Brenda Graver, Genevieve Marcy, Norman W. Williams and David D. Williams; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William "Norman" Saunders, on March 23, 1986, whom she married August 29, 1938, in Barberton, and she was also preceded by a granddaughter, Nila Louise Kelch, on June 15, 1968.
Friends may call at the Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A service will be held at the East Conneaut Wesleyan Methodist Church, 315 Main St., East Conneaut, on Wednesday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Robert Brooks, Rev. William Cope and Rev. David Blowers will co-officiate.
Memorials may be made to the Missions Dept., Wesleyan Methodist Church, 315 Main St., East Conneaut, OH 44030. Burial will be in the Shenango Valley Cemetery, Greenville, PA.
Richard G. Alm
NEWTON FALLS - Richard G. Alm, 78, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Community Skilled Nursing Center, Warren.
Born Jan. 28, 1924, in Chicago, he was the son of Otto and Anna (Johnson) Alm and had been an area resident for 45 years.
A graduate of Illinois Institute of Technology, he was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.
He married Jane E. Books on Aug. 22, 1964,
Mr. Alm worked as an electrical engineer at Packard Electric, retiring in 1989 after 10 years of service. He then joined the Packard Electric Retiree Association.
A member of Champion Presbyterian Church, he was an avid golfer and a member of many leagues. He enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Heintzman of Warsaw, Ind.; a son, Richard of Dallas, Texas; two stepdaughters, Katherine Mertz of Williamsfield Township and Linda Komandt of Bristolville; three granddaughters, Pamela Wolfe of Southington, Christian Hollis of Williamsfield Township, and Jennifer Frampton of Lansing, Ill.; two grandsons, William Rossman of Williamsfield Township and Darren Heintzman of Warsaw, Ind.; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; and a grandson, Daniel Metcalf.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday at Champion Presbyterian Church, Champion. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Cortland.
Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, 533 N. Park Ave., Warren, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Francis Moger
NEWTON FALLS - Francis Moger, 70, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at St. Joseph Health Center, Warren, after a lengthy illness.
Born May 30, 1930, in Newton Falls, he was a son of Thomas and Mary (Csapo) Moger.
He married Dorothy Merie Leggett Dec. 14, 1955.
He was a retired sales engineer and had worked at Taylor-Winfield in Warren.
He was a member of the Warren Amateur Ham Radio Operators and his call letters were W8KAK.
One of his hobbies was ballroom dancing and he had danced at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Ashtabula.
Survivors include one son, Steven of Lake Milton; three daughters, Sally Warner of Newton Falls, Susan Moger of Leavittsburg and Sandra Byrnes of Niles; one brother, John of Newton Falls; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife on May 25, 1984; and his parents.
Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Borowski Memorial Home, 30 Ridge Road, Newton Falls.
Burial will be in Newton Township Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
