Brown spent his childhood in Jacksonville and showed early signs of having an inquisitive scientific mind and inventive ingenuity. As a child he became very interested in bird nests and eggs and began photographing and documenting what he learned. Brown and his father gardened together and experimented with hybridizing German bearded iris.
Throughout his life he continued to manage his ancestral family's farms. He loved to climb mountains in Wyoming and Colorado in his younger years. He was a naturalist and an accomplished ornithologist, photographing and studying birds worldwide. He also loved to travel out west in his Model “A” to search and collect geological specimens. He made jewelry from the semi-precious stones he found, cut and polished on his own homemade machines.

He retired in 1988. He was Professor Emeritus of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He had his own laboratory and did research on Radioiodine. He developed the first stationary directional Geiger counter, which allowed him to locate tracer radioisotopes within the thyroid. He made 13 trips to study and treat Marshall Islanders who were exposed to fallout from the first hydrogen bomb test off Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean in 1953.
He received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach for three months in Australia after which he spent a month in the remote highlands of New Guinea studying goiters in native people whose diets lacked iodine. Two of the most prestigious offices he held were president of the American Thyroid Association and president of the Cleveland Surgical Society. In his day he was one of the world's pre-eminent surgeons in thyroid and parathyroid matters. MetroHealth's Dobyns Surgical Suite was named after him.
