Funeral service for Eugene "Sonny" Johnson, age 71, of Mentor, will be 11 a.m. Friday May 28, 2004 at Brunner Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor.
Mr. Johnson died May 26, 2004, at his residence. He was born July 21, 1932, in Cleveland, he lived there before moving to Mentor 42 years ago.
He enjoyed fishing and anything to do with nature and the outdoors. He was also a fan of the Cleveland Indians.
Mr. Johnson worked as a rigger and ironworker for Teamsters 407 for 30 years.
Survivors are his wife of 53 years, Donna (Holmberg); children, Linda Witt of Mentor, Sonny Johnson Jr. of Florida, Lillian Blevins of Perry, Bruce (Diane) Johnson of Mentor, John (Janie) Johnson of Florida and Ed Johnson of Florida; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sisters, Grace Lehr and Shirley Meads.
His brothers, Bill, Bob and John; and grandson, Justin, are deceased.
Friends may call Today from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests contributions to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 5786 Heisley Road, Mentor 44060.

Private service for Lawrence V. Judd, age 65, of Concord Twp., will be held in Scoville, Kentucky.
Mr. Judd died Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Hospice House in Cleveland. He was born January 28, 1939 in Levi, Kentucky, he lived in Madison before moving to Concord Twp. 16 years ago.
Mr. Judd worked for Lubrizol in the maintenance division for 33 years, retiring in 1995.
He raised and loved horses, founding Basic Tack, a horse saddle and other accessories business based at the Lake County Fairgrounds Flea Market for the past 6 years.
He was a graduate of Riverside High School, class of 1957 and a U.S. Army Veteran. He was also a member of the Perry Amvets #1971. He was a devoted husband, son, brother, father, nephew, cousin and friend to many and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors are his wife of 16 years, Judy Joyce (JJ); son: Larry (Barbara) of Painesville, stepsons: John (Jill) of Xenia and Jerry (Donna) of Washington Court House; mother: Pauline Newsome of Painesville Twp; brothers: Gary Judd of Concord Twp and step brothers: Greg Newsome of Perry and Kirby Newsome, Jr. of Painesville Twp.; aunts: Maggie Mayse of Painesville, Fannie Chapman of Perry and uncle Ben Caudell of Painesville. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephew and cousins.
His first wife, Peggy, daughter: Luave, Father Vernon, stepfather Kirby Newsome, Sr. and brother Michael Neswome are deceased.
Contributions may be made in Lawrence’s memory to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 5786 Heisley Rd., Mentor, 44060.

Funeral service for C. Richard “Coogan” Reese, age 87, of Punta Gorda, Fla. will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday April 6, 2004 at Brunner Funeral Home & Cremation Service 8466 Mentor Ave. Mentor, Ohio.
Mr. Reese died Sunday March 28, 2004 at his home in Florida. He was born July 16, 1916 in Mermill, Ohio.
In 1934 he graduated from Hamler H.S., he was in the U.S. Army from 1940 – 1946, where he received various awards: Combat infantry award in Burma, Bronze Star, Chinese government award, Asiatic – Pacific Ribbon with three battle stars and his highest rank attained – Captain in the infantry.
He earned his BA degree from Hiram College in 1949, 1955 Masters degree from Kent State University ( Ohio ), 1949 – 1952 Taught and coached at Lordstown H.S. ( Ohio ), 1952 – 1979 Taught and coached at Mentor H.S. ( Ohio ).
On October 28, 1988 Mentor H.S. (Ohio) football stadium was dedicated to Mr. Reese and in November of 1998 he was inducted as a coach into Mentor H.S. (Ohio) Sports Hall of Fame.
Memberships include Life member of National Education Assn., BPO Elks, USA – Lodge 2606 Punta Gorda, Fl., AARP, China, Burma India Veterans Assn.: Local – Tarpon Basha, State Membership, National membership; AAA, Burma Star – Life member, United States Golf Assn., Deep Creek Golf Club (Fla.), Deep Creek Civic Assn. (Fla), The Retired Officers Assn with rank of Captain. (local and national) and the American Legion Post 110 in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Survivors include his sons William R. (Hazel) of Dayton, Ohio and James L. and wife of Boston, Mass.; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Louise; parents Charles and Lulu Reese; sister Marguerite Miley 12/15/1997.
Family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Monday April 5, 2004 at the Funeral Home.
Interment Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland, Ohio.

Funeral service for Earl Rutland, age 83, of Mentor will be held 11 a.m. Thursday April 1, 2004 at Mentor Baptist Church, 7500 Johnnycake Ridge Rd. Mentor.
Mr. Rutland died March 29, 2004 at Mentor Way Nursing & Rehabilitation Center where he has resided for 47 years. He was born August 28, 1920 in Cleveland.
He was employed by Mentor Way at various odd jobs over the years at his request.
A beloved member of the Mentor Baptist Church for whom he hosted Bible study heard weekly at the facility and a special friend of Lakeshore Assembly of God Church. Mr. Rutland was often seen riding his 3-wheel bike throughout the community meeting people and stopping by many businesses to maintain friendships. A true lover of classical music with the ability to name not only the piece and the composer but almost always the conductor and orchestra within hearing the first few bars.
Countless friends and his Mentor Way family survive Mr. Rutland.
Visitation will be held Wednesday 7-8 p.m. at Mentor Way Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 8881 Schaefer St. Mentor, Oh. & Thursday 10-11 a.m. at the church.
Interment Mentor Cemetery, Mentor.

Howard R. Cavell, age 93, a 31-year resident of Perry Township and former 24-year resident of Willowick, passed away Oct. 24, 2010. He was born Jan. 26, 1917, in Cleveland. A 1936 graduate of East High School in Cleveland, Howard was a talented athlete, excelling in football, baseball and track. Mr. Cavell was employed at The Madison Foundry in Cleveland as a sales engineer for 30 years. He completed his career as the general manager of The Electromark Corp. of Willoughby before retiring in 1982. He served as an active member of the Willowick Recreation Board for many years and was a charter member of the Willowick Midget Football League. He was the head coach of the Willowick "Lightweight Rams" for many years and also managed many teams of Little League, Pony League, and American Legion baseball. He was a long-standing member and former president of the Eastlake North High Athletic Boosters. He truly loved coaching and mentoring young people and was always an active participant in his children's, grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's school activities and athletic events. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed organizing the annual family fishing trips to Canada that spanned more than 60 years and five generations of his family.
Survivors are his children, Phyllis "Judy" (Al) Albright of Perry, Gary (Pam) Cavell of Concord Township, Jerry (Donna) Cavell of Eastlake and Howard (Pam) Cavell of Concord Township; grandchildren, Robert (Sue), Christine (Tim), Jerry Jr. (Moira), Mandy (Ricky), Rosa, Howard Jr. (Dawn), Scott (Jenny), Michael (Stacy), Jason (Michelle), Holly (Brian) and Katie; great-grandchildren, Zackery, Ryan, Blake, Taylor, Howie, Scott Jr., Joey, Mia, Ava, Gino, Olivia, Leo, Tesa, Sam and Willa. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Louise "Sis" Cavell in June of this year. They had been happily married for 70 years. Also deceased are his sisters, Ethel (DeeDee), Lillian "Sis"; brother, Thomas; and his parents, Thomas and Lillian Cavell.
The family would like to thank Hospice of the Western Reserve Heisley Road office for their compassionate care of our father during this difficult time.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Brunner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor 44060, where family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Cleveland, OH 44119.

Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Yvette B. (Cardin) Slattery, 67, of Mentor, a homemaker, will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday March 27, 2004 at St. John Vianney Church, 7575 Bellflower Road, in Mentor.
Mrs. Slattery died March 23, 2004, at University Hospital in Cleveland. She was born Dec. 31, 1936, in Hartford, Conn., she lived in Hartford before moving to Mentor 40 years ago.
Yvette's greatest joy was loving her family and seeing them happy. She loved baking, cooking, antiquing, bingo, casinos, and traveling. She was also a 1954 graduate of Hartford High School in Hartford, Conn.
Survivors are her daughters, Denise (Robert) Ahlstrom of Mentor, Patricia (Thomas) Frantz of Mentor, Maureen (Roger) Slattery-Grant of Mentor, Pauline (Randy Swan) Slattery of Mentor, and Katherine (Kip) Amerin of Andover; son, John "Jack" (Julie) Slattery of Mentor; grandchildren, Marriette and Bobby Ahlstrom, Mathieu, Brittany and Hilaire Frantz, Nicholas and Jacob Amerin, and Emily, Sarah, and Megan Slattery; and brothers, Willie Cardin of Naples, Fla., and Donald Cardin of Punta Gorda, Fla.
Her husband, Robert J. "Bob" Slattery; parents, Willie and Blanche Cardin; and brothers, Robert and Norman Cardin, are deceased.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brunner Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 8466 Mentor Ave., in Mentor.
Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
The family suggests contributions to Yvette's preferred charity, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, The Diabetes Research Foundation, 4500 Rockside Road, Suite 420, Cleveland 44131.

Funeral Mass for Beatrice "Betty" (Louch) Stepp, 85, of Mentor, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Roberts Catholic Church, 23802 Lakeshore Blvd., in Euclid.
Mrs. Stepp died March 23, 2004, at Summerville Assisted Living Home in Mentor. She was born March 5, 1919, in Brockville, Canada, she lived in Euclid before moving to Mentor more than three years ago.
She was a member of St. Roberts Catholic Church in Euclid, where she was involved with the Society of Mary. She also loved music, poetry, and traveling.
Mrs. Stepp worked as an executive secretary to the president of the former Cleveland and Ameritrust Bank.
Survivors are her husband, Martin R. Stepp; sister, Nora Louch Sutton of Canada; nieces, Susan (Ken) Withers of Napanee, Ontario and Suzan (Louis) Sutton Miller of Canada; stepdaughter, Paula (Reno Marcotuli) Sak of New Castle, Pa.; and stepdaughter-in-law, Ceil Stepp of Havre De Gras, Md.
Her first husband, Charles Kemp; sisters, Amy Louch Graham and Margaret Louch McKay; and stepson, Roy M. Stepp, are deceased.
Friends may call 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Brunner Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 8466 Mentor Ave., in Mentor.
Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.
