Winfried Karl Martin
CHARDON TOWNSHIP - Winfried (Marty) Karl Martin, 79, of Chardon, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at home after a long struggle with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
He was born April 17, 1923, in Wolfmannshausen in Thuringen, Germany, the son of Oskar and Rosa (Raeder) Martin.
In April 1942, he was drafted into military service and served on the northern Russian frontier until he was wounded and sent back to Germany. From April to August 1945, he was a prisoner of war in Camp 404 in Marseilles, France. While still in the hospital, he married Liselotte Arnold, on Dec. 2, 1944.
After completing his graduate education, he was appointed district forester with the Bavarian government.
In 1953, he and his wife left family and friends, immigrating to the United States aboard the Italia, in search of greater freedom and opportunity.
He attended night school to improve his English and earned his American high school diploma, with honors, from John Hay High School. He worked at General Electric for 15 years.
His love of nature led him to buy two acres of land on Welk Road in Chardon, where he and his wife planned to build a home. He worked on the acreage tirelessly with primitive hand tools. After a time, they bought an additional 28 acres.
In 1960, he and a carpenter worked on the house during the day, while he worked at the General Electric Co.'s Willoughby Quartz plant on second and third shifts. The house was completed in 1961, and he lived there ever since.
In 1968, Mr. Martin made a career change when R. Henry Norweb Jr., then the director of the Holden Arboretum, hired him to work on the 600 Baldwin acres. In 1970, he was appointed superintendent of Lantern Court and assistant superintendent of the arboretum. In 1974, he was promoted to superintendent, a position he held until his retirement in 1989.
At the Holden Arboretum, he not only was instrumental in the meticulous upkeep of the grounds and buildings, but also helped to develop the facility's infrastructure, including buildings to serve the public, facilities for the growing maintenance department, work roads, ski touring trails, a sugarbush, lilac and rhododendron collections and a wildflower garden.
He also founded the summer intern program, through which many international students gained experience and learned about American culture. For this successful program, he received the prestigious James Newby Award (England) for the arboretum in 1992, and the program was named, in his honor, the Marty Martin International Internships.
He was a member of the American and Canadian Rhododendron societies, American Rock Garden Society, Northeast Heather Society, International Lilac Society, World Wildlife, Sierra Club, National Park Association, Geauga County Humane Society, International Association of Superintendents of Botanical Gardens and the Nature Conservancy. He also enjoyed skiing and woodworking.
For 40 years, he maintained a small Christmas tree farm, which was more of a hobby than a business. He enjoyed watching children choose their tree and wishing families well for the coming year. In later years, he had customers who were second and even third generation of families who had been coming to him for a tree since the 1960s.
Survivors include Liselotte, his wife of 58 years; a daughter, Sonya M. Schwaegerle, of Portsmouth, N.H.; four grandchildren, Kristen, Peter, Noah and Kate; a sister, Erna Eisenmann of Germany; and a brother, Wolfgang Holzmeier, also of Germany.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Roland.
A private memorial service will be held, followed by a farewell gathering at 4 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Holden Arboretum.
Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Chardon is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Nature Conservancy, 6375 Riverside Drive, Suite 50, Dublin, 43017.
