Hazel Plants
CHARDON TOWNSHIP - Hazel Plants, 73, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Burton Healthcare Center, Burton.
She was born May 27, 1929, in Claysville, Pa., the daughter of William and Nellie Sprowls.
She married William T. Plants April 17, 1954, in Claysville.
Mrs. Plants had lived in the area for the past 40 years after moving from Cleveland. She worked at the Maple Elementary School cafeteria, Chardon Local Schools, for 15 years.
She was a lifetime member of the Great Geauga County Fair Board ladies auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, making candy and decorating cakes.
Survivors include her two sons, Sam Plants of Hambden Township, and Roger Plants of Lyndhurst; three grandsons, Roger, Ryan and Tyler; seven brothers, Franklin Sprowls of Eastlake, Charles Sprowls of Bedford, Oliver Sprowls of Claysville, Pa., Harley Sprowls of West Alexander, Pa., James Sprowls of Scenery Hill, Pa., and Elmer and John Sprowls, both of Washington, Pa.; and two sisters, Hilda Waychoff of Willowick, and Opal Woodburn of Claysville, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, who died Dec. 3, 2001.
Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, with the Rev. Henry Woodruff, pastor of the Chardon United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial is in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens, Chester Township.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Samuel Blum
CHARDON TOWNSHIP - Samuel Blum, 88, of Chardon Township, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at his home.
Born April 26, 1913, in Lorraine, Kan., he was a son of Samuel and Lena (Kunz) Blum and had been an area resident since 1954. He also lived in Rocky River for a time.
He married Louise Woodruff on April 26, 1940, in Rocky River.
Mr. Blum was vice president of Midwest Forge Co., Cleveland. He retired from the auto parts manufacturing firm in 1980 after 30 years on the job.
A graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, he appreciated classical music and sports, especially football and baseball. He was an avid reader and enjoyed general history. He especially enjoyed maintaining the grounds around his home.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Nancy Blum of Olney, Md., and Louise Sullivan-Blum of Corning, N.Y.; three sons, Robert of Lakewood, John of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and James of Chardon Township; six grandchildren, Troy, Jay and Todd, Blum, Liam and Lucy Hulbert, and Zoe Sullivan-Blum.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
Graveside service is 10:30 a.m. Friday at Riverside Cemetery, 3607 Pearl Road, Cleveland.
The family will receive friends at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday. An informal ceremony will be held at 4 p.m.

Robert L. DeVies
CHARDON - Robert L. DeVies, 88, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Chardon Assisted Living.
He was born July 1, 1913, in Detroit, Mich., a son of John and Hazel (Shoemaker) DeVies.
A 61-year resident of the area, Mr. DeVies was vice president of manufacturing at Flambeau Products, Middlefield. He retired in 1978 after 38 years with the company, where he started as a tool and die maker.
A graduate of Wellington High School, he was a member of First United Methodist Church, Middlefield. He was a former member of the Knights of Phythias, Middlefield, and the Parkman 55 Club.
He enjoyed woodworking, traveling and serving as the family handyman.
Survivors include two daughters, Marillyn Stone of Novelty and Jeannine Martinson of Bay Village; his brother, Richard of Wellington; four grandchildren, Koni Casey, Kathy Munn, Tricia Williams and Tammie Distelsweig; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1991, and his parents.
Services is 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Russell Golden Rule Funeral Service, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield, with the Rev. Ray Mullet of Burton officiating. Burial will be in Overlook Cemetery, Parkman Township.
Calling hour is from 1 p.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Geauga County Humane Society or to the charity of choice.
Joseph Veverka
CHARDON Joseph Veverka, 88, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Meridia Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights.
He was born Nov. 1, 1912, in Cleveland, the son of Joseph and Anna (Forster) Veverka. He has been a lifelong Geauga County resident.
Mr. Veverka was the owner of Veverka Disposal in Hambden from 1957 to 1992; he was previously a carpenter for Pokorny and Bosworth of Chardon for 10 years and a caretaker foreman of The Hambden Apple Orchard for 10 years before that.
He enjoyed woodworking and reading.
Mr. Veverka was a member of The Czech Society of America in Cleveland.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Butler of Chardon; grandchildren, Michael, Robert, Christopher, Thomas, Sean and Heather Butler and Jaime Coe; sisters, Hattie Vlcek of Clearwater, Fla., and Margie Roubic of Auburn Township.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine (Albrecht) Veverka in 1993; a son, Robert Veverka in 1970; his parents; brothers, Louis and Henry "Hank"; and a sister, Anna Veverka.
A private family service will be held. Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township.

Loran Gulyas
CHARDON TOWNSHIP - Loran Gulyas, 49, of Chardon Township, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Lake West Hospital in Willoughby.
He was born July 17, 1952, in Ravenna, the son of Dennis and Phyllis Gulyas.
Mr. Gulyas has lived in Chardon Township for the last five years, moving from Cleveland Heights.
He was a professor of Sociology and the Social Sciences for the last 18 years at Lakeland Community College.
He also worked at Point One, which was a mental health agency in Lake County for about 10 years. Mr. Gulyas was the director of After Care.
He married Sara Hruby on March 21, 1997 at the United Methodist Church in Madison.
Mr. Gulyas was board president at Extended Housing in Painesville, was named Who's Who of Teaching in 2001, was a member of the Lake County ADAMHS Board Advisory Committee and was the program director of the Human Services Department at Lakeland Community College.
He was an avid outdoorsman and loved nature. He enjoyed collecting gems and minerals and all types of music.
Mr. Gulyas was a caring and well loved friend of many, and was a loving and caring husband.
Survivors include his wife, Sara; mother, Phyllis Gulyas of Hiram; four brothers, Dennis of Columbus, Peter and John, both of Cleveland Heights and Ben of South Euclid.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Services will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, with the Chaplin Rick Sonnycalf of Lake Hospital System officiating.
The family will receive friends and relatives after the service.

Myrtle E. Pelton
CHARDON - Myrtle Emma Pelton, 96, died Wednesday, June 4, 2002, at Chardon Healthcare Center, Chardon.
She was born Dec. 22, 1905, in Russell Township, the daughter of Ray and Anna (Sindelar) Hall, and moved to Chardon from Chester Township in 1969.
She worked in a defense plant during World War II, and with her husband was a caretaker for Hale Homestead Museum in Bath.
She married Clarence E. Pelton on July 2, 1924.
Mrs. Pelton was a graduate of the former Geauga Seminary, Chester Township, and was a member of Chesterland Baptist Church and Chester Grange. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and sewing, and won many ribbons at the Great Geauga County Fair for her crafts.
Survivors include a daughter, Lois Boykin of Mentor; three grandchildren, David Boykin, Linda Binkley and Robin Enderle; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters Ruth Savata of Chardon, and Margaret Morton of Anchorage, Alaska; and two brothers Ray G. Hall of Indiana, and Clifford Hall of Painesville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Aug. 22, 1991; six sisters, Vivian Boam, Hilda Collin, Gertrude Small, Florence Ransom, Evelyn Hitter and Betty Albrecht; and two brothers, David and Theodore Hall.
Memorial service is 11 a.m. Friday at the Ritondaro Funeral Home, 126 South St., Chardon. The Rev. Harry Banfield will officiate. Burial of cremated remains will be at Riverview Cemetery, Novelty, at a later date.
Visitation at the Chesterland Baptist Church, 12670 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township, will immediately follow the memorial service.
