Martha S. Joiner
HUNTSBURG - Martha S. Joiner, 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Blossom Hill Care Center in Huntsburg.
She was born Nov. 12, 1909 in Snyder, Ark., the daughter of Sherman and Pearl May (Pierce) Sperry.
Mrs. Joiner had been a lifelong resident of the area and attended South High School in Cleveland and Middlefield High School.
She married Hugh Norman Joiner on Aug. 28, 1928 in Ripley, N.Y. and worked at Geauga Industries for 25 years, retiring in 1976.
She enjoyed crocheting and her family.
She attended Huntsburg Baptist Church, was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church of Middlefield, Thrift Shop at the church, Middlefield Historical Society and Middlefield Senior Center.
Survivors include three daughters, Ethlyn Lucht of Fletcher, N.C., Phyllis Sturm of Cleveland and Georgia Nina Shipman of Middlefield; a son, Philip Joiner of Knoxville, Tenn., 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Anna Brown and Elsie Ewig; a brother, Pierce Sperr; two grandchildren, Gregory Shipman and Mitchell Lucht; and one great-grandchild, Justin Purpura.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, at Russell Golden Rule Funeral Service, 15670 West High St., Middlefield, with the Rev. William Norman of the 1st United Methodist Church in Middlefield officiating.
Burial will be in Middlefield Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Metzenbaum Center or Hattie Larlam or the 1st United Methodist Church.
Homer R. Zion
HUNTSBURG TOWNSHIP - Homer R. Zion, 86, of Huntsburg Township, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at Geauga Regional Hospital.
He was born Nov. 22, 1915, in Cleveland, the son of Hugo and Helen (Shulz) Zion.
Mr. Zion owned Zion Sohio Service in Montville from 1952 through 1967. He then was a rural carrier for the Huntsburg Post Office from 1967 through 1982.
He married Cyrene Gaynor Nov. 10, 1956, in Thompson.
Mr. Zion served as a technical sergeant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Highland Heights.
Mr. Zion was active in the Masonic Order, a 49-year member of the Hartsgrove Lodge 397 in Hartsgrove Township, a Royal Arch Mason of the Painesville chapter, a Knight Templar of the Painesville Commandrey, a Knight of the York Cross-of-Honor recipient, a member of the Al Koran Shrine, a member and former commander of VFW Post 2286 in Windsor, a member of the Polish Legion of American Veterans in Chardon, and a member of the Huntsburg Grange in Huntsburg Township.
Survivors include his wife, Cyrene, of Huntsburg; two daughters, Heidi Schad of Solon, and Abby Fishel of Cuyahoga Falls; two sons, Homer R. Zion Jr. of Independence, and Terrance Zion of Claridon Township; eight grandchildren, Cindy Pratt, Gary Schad, Kristen, Emily, Nathan and Geoffrey Zion, James II and Lauren Fishel; four stepgrandchildren, Kristen Bass, Jennifer and Allison Mittower, and Heather Fishel; one great-grandchild, Andrew Pratt; two sisters, Ruth Lupo of Fort Myers, Fla., and Lila Spiegel of Fletcher, N.C.; and one brother, Hubert Zion of Columbia, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Hugo Zion.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, with the Rev. William McLatchie of Hillcrest Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in Huntsburg Cemetery, Huntsburg Township.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with a public Masonic service at 8:30 p.m.

S. Susan Loving
HUNTSBURG TOWNSHIP - S. Susan Loving, 77, of Blossom Nursing Home, and formerly of Addison Road, Geneva, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at University Hospital, Cleveland.
She was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Williams River, W.Va., the daughter of Christopher and Rebecca N. (Cogar) Riddle.
A Geneva area resident for more than 30 years, Mrs. Loving was a member of the Church of God in Madison. She served on the Ladies Ministry in the Church of God in Geneva; Sunday School teacher at Burton Assembly of God and Grace Assembly in Madison. She wrote songs and poems, played several musical instruments, enjoyed flower gardening, listening to gospel music, and working puzzle books.
Survivors include her husband, Nicholas; four sons, James of Garrettsville, Marvin of Geneva, John of Madison and Nicholas of Ashtabula; five daughters, Annabell Marsh of Maple Heights, Mary Ayals of Supply, N.C., Lucy Loving of Geneva, Christine Vargas of Ashtabula, and Jackie of Geneva; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a sister, Zona Harris of Mobile, Ala.; a brother, Delbert Riddle of Mobile, Ala.
She was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Pauline, at birth; a son, Ronald; and five brothers, Carl, Bert, Orville, Alva and Estill Riddle.
Service is 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Donald E. Walker Funeral, 828 Sherman St., Geneva, with the Rev. Rex Jordan of the Church of God in Madison, officiating. Burial will be in Windsor Cemetery, Windsor Township.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Ralph B. Hoover
HUNTSBURG TOWNSHIP - Ralph B. Hoover, 94, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at his home.
The son of James W. and Anna (Perkins) Hoover, he was born June 20, 1906 in Birch River, W. Va. He lived in Huntsburg Township since 1980, moving there from Sutton, W. Va.
Mr. Hoover was a coal miner for 27 years in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. He also worked at Copper Tube & Smelting in Solon, from where he retired. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spending winters in Florida.
Survivors include his wife Reva, whom he married June 20, 1926 in Birch River, W. Va.; two sons, Ralph Jr. of Champion and Woodrow C. of Huntsburg; five daughters, Aretta Rose of Huntsburg, Avnell Keener of Gassaway, W. Va., Elaine Dillon of Spencer, Sharon Faulkner of Springfield, Mo. and Sheila Calkins of Huntsburg; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; four sisters; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Russell Golden Rule Funeral Service, 15670 West High St., Middlefield, with the Rev. David Johnson, of Huntsburg Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Huntsburg Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

June E. Pitorak
HUNTSBURG - June E. Pitorak, 74, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at UHHS-Geauga Regional Hospital in Claridon Township.
Mrs. Pitorak was born June 11, 1927, in Claridon Township, the daughter of Elwin and Lora (Champlin) Evans.
She married Michael Pitorak on Oct. 25, 1956, in East Claridon.
A kindergarten and sixth-grade teacher, she taught at Troy, Hambden and Jordak elementary schools in Middlefield and Huntsburg Elementary School.
Mrs. Pitorak enjoyed reading and loved music.
She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Chardon High School, graduated from Hiram College with honors and earned a master's degree from Eastern Michigan University.
She was a member of the East Claridon United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school for 51 years and served as superintendent for 40 years. She also was a former choir director.
In recent years, she was an associate member of the Huntsburg Congregational United Church of Christ.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Kamma sorority and 4-H Advisory Committee. Mrs. Pitorak was a founding leader of 4-H Bunny Bunch and a co-founder of the sixth-grade camping program at Cardinal schools.
She had spent time as president of Church Women United in Geauga County and Huntsburg Twig at Geauga Hospital.
She was an assistant director at High Brook Lodge for two summers.
Survivors include her husband; son Harry Pitorak of Sinking Spring, Pa.; two daughters, Cathleen Sweet of Huntsburg and Susan Jones of Nacogdoches, Tex.; and four grandchildren, Abigail, Danielle, Mike and Carolyn.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Harry Evans.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Huntsburg Congregational United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Robert Barber officiating.
Burial will be in East Claridon Cemetery.

Ruth A. Spence (nee: McDougall), a resident of Chagrin Falls, age 76, passed away at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, Monday, October 11, 2004. Mrs. Spence was born June 23, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She lived in Thompson Township, Ohio, since 1955, moving to Chagrin Falls three years ago. For 25 years, Mrs. Spence was a Middle School English teacher for Chardon Local Schools, retiring in 1986. She loved to read and enjoyed attending Cleveland Orchestra concerts. For many years, she and her husband, Gerald L. Spence, whom she married in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 7, 1951, were very active in the Geauga Lyric Theater Guild. She was also an active member of the Thompson Garden Club and enjoyed traveling. Mrs. Spence very much enjoyed the various holidays throughout the year. She created a wreath for each holiday and made it a special occasion for the changing of each wreath. During her later years she regularly played Bridge until just a few weeks prior to her death. Mrs. Spence is survived by: One daughter, Anna (Mike) McDonald of Thompson Township, Ohio; one son, Cmdr. Jim (Mary) Spence (ret. USCG) of Tampa, Florida; three grandchildren, Dan and Josh Spence of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Ryan and Kelly Spence of Tampa, Florida, and Jennyrose Spence of Pennsylvania; and one sister, Joan McCurdy of Cortland, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Jerry L. Spence, on July 28, 1984; her son, John G. Spence in 1979; and her parents, Edward and Rose McDougall. A Private Family Burial will be held. Coewen T. Henk

Visitation: Friday, Dec. 3, 2:00-4:00 PM and 7:00 – 9:00 PM at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., (on St. Rt. 44, 500’ south of Rt. 6/Chardon Square).
Mr. Henk was a 2002 graduate of Chardon High School. He was the Shop Ambassador of the Auto Body Shop at Auburn Career Center. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Henk was also very active in Motocross, dirt bikes. Survivors include his mother Wanda Olp of Mayfield Hts., father Thomas E. Henk of Hambden Twp., brother Kyle Henk of Hambden Twp., grandfather Oliver (Wanda) Olp of Montville Twp., grandmother Phyllis Scott of Hagerstown, MD, great grandmother Margaret Mortimer of Eastlake, grandmother Katheryn Henk of Mentor. His grandfather Carl Henk is deceased.
