Laverne J. Hess (1 of 2)
CLARIDON TOWNSHIP - Laverne Janet Hess, 69, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Hillcrest Hospital, Mayfield.
Born April 1, 1932, in Newbury Township, she was a daughter of Creed and Rose (Welcheck) Casteel and was a lifelong Geauga County resident.
She married Richard L. Hess on Sept. 5, 1953, in Burton.
Mrs. Hess worked for seven years at Huron Road Hospital as a registered nurse before returning to Kent State University to obtain her teacher's certificate and masters in education with an emphasis in reading. She taught in the Berkshire Local School District at Burton Elementary for 30 years, retiring in 1997.
Mrs. Hess was an honored teacher at the Education Celebration at Burton Elementary. She was named in Who's Who of National Teachers in 1996. A founder of the "Young Authors" program at Burton Elementary, she encouraged her students to read and write books. She also had a great love of music.
She was a member of the Omega Chapter - Delta Kappa Gamma Fraternity and an active member of First Congregational Church of Claridon, where she played the organ for more than 25 years. The church organ is dedicated in her honor for her many years of faithful service.
When her daughters were young, she was active with Girl Scouts and 4-H. She received awards at the Great Geauga County Fair for her baking. Since her retirement, she had enjoyed playing bingo around the area.
Survivors include four daughters, Bonnie Ward of Burton Township, Patty Hess of Middlefield Township, Jean Baird of Chardon Township and Sally Hess of Claridon Township; four grandchildren, Alan Ward of Burton, Amanda and Daniel Ward of Burton Township, and David Baird of Chardon; a great-grandson; and a brother, James Casteel of Gilbert, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 6, 1987; her parents; a sister, Dorothy Bartos; and a brother, C. Lawrence Casteel.
Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church, 13942 Mayfield Road, Claridon Township, with the Rev. Connie Bradow and the Rev. Ray Mullet, chaplain of Hospice of Care Corp., Chardon, officiating. Burial will be in Claridon Cemetery, Claridon Township.
Calling hours are 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.

Abner C. Evans
CLARIDON TOWNSHIP - Abner Clyde Evans, 61, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at his home.
Born June 8, 1940, in East Claridon, he was a son of Ray "Tim" Evans and Sarah Isabelle James Evans Young and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Evans was employed at General Electric's Tungsten Road plant for 36 years, holding several positions, including factory worker, foreman and retiring as manager of shop operations in 1995.
He married Gwen Pisching on Feb. 6, 1960, in Indiana.
Mr. Evans was a member of the former East Claridon United Methodist Church. He had a sense of humor and loved to talk. He especially enjoyed working in the yard on his tractor and mower. A devoted husband and father, he loved playing with his grandchildren.
Mr. Evans coached Little League in Claridon Township for many years, winning a few Geauga County championships.
He spent his retirement years remodeling the family farmhouse, which has been owned by the Evans for more than 70 years, and enjoying its peacefulness.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Rhonda Griesmar of Lyndhurst; a son, Timothy of Ypsilanti, Mich.; five grandchildren; Marissa, Abigail, Candice and Austin Griesmar and Elijah and Hannah Evans; and four brothers, Edward Evans of Texas, Clyde Young of Georgetown, Fla., Earl Young of Painesville, and David Young of Pewaukee, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Rudy Young; and two brothers, James "Curly" Evans and Roy Young.
Service is 11 a.m., Monday at the Burr Funeral Home 116 South St., Chardon. Burial will be in East Claridon Cemetery, Claridon Township.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Rosemary V. Nagy
CLARIDON TOWNSHIP - Rosemary "Ronnie" V. Nagy, 74, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at UHHS Geauga Regional Hospital.
She was born Jan. 9, 1927, in Evansville, Ind., the daughter of Frederick and Celeste (Shiele) Burgrabe.
Mrs. Nagy moved to the area in 1974 from Euclid and Los Angeles, Calif..
She was a registered nurse for 40 years, retiring in 1989.
She married Elmer Nagy on Sept. 19, 1948, in northern Kentucky
She was a member of American Legion Post 678, Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6519, Auxiliary Aerie Fraternal Order of Eagles 2261, Ohio Nurses Association. In her younger years, she was an equestrian in Chicago, Ill., and Maple Heights.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed listening to her scanner and was a supporter of the Geauga County Sheriff's Department.
Survivors include her daughter, Pam Womack of Billings, Mont., and a brother, Donald Burgrabe of Marion, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on June 7 and a brother, Bill Burgrabe.
Private family services will be held.
Arrangements are by the Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 116 South St., Chardon.
Margaret M. Bruna
CLARIDON TOWNSHIP - Margaret M. Bruna, 76, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at UHHS Geauga Regional Hospital, Claridon Township.
She was born Feb. 2, 1925, in Cleveland, the daughter of Louis and Mary (Balough) Rogers, and was a lifelong area resident.
A graduate of Shaw High School, Cleveland, she was former owner of the Hill Top Restaurant, Burton Township, and the Valley Diner, Orwell, retiring in 1980.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Chardon, and the Chardon Senior Center. In her younger years, she enjoyed bingo, bowling and camping.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas Rogers and Mark Bruna of Tennessee, and William Bruna of Chardon; three brothers, John Rogers of Huntsburg Township, Ray Rogers of Middlefield and Leonard Rogers of South Newbury; a grandson, Thomas Rogers Jr.; and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William, on Jan. 9, 1983; a daughter, Marilyn Rogers, in 1969; and an infant sister, Mariann.
Memorial Mass is 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Church, Chardon. Burial will be at a later date.

She was a member of the Church of St. Mary in Chardon. Mrs. Yurko enjoyed stamping, music and short vacations. She was a member of the Chardon Garden Club and enjoyed spending time with her many friends. Mrs. Yurko was an avid antique collector. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her daughters Deborah (Ron) Haubert of Streetsboro, Elizabeth (Michael) Funka of West Alexander, PA, sons James (Sandy) Tench of Cleveland, Jeffrey L.
