Dorothy R. Smallwood
MIDDLEFIELD - Dorothy R. Smallwood, 87, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000 at the University Hospitals of Cleveland.
Born March 26, 1913 in Pittsburgh, Pa., Mrs. Smallwood was the daughter of John M. and Susan (Gura) Smallwood. She was a lifelong area resident.
She married John Smallwood on Jan 19, 1935.
A graduate of Huntsburg High School, Mrs. Smallwood worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for Smallwood Packing Co. in Middlefield for 40 years.
She enjoyed gardening and was devoted to her family and to her work.
She is survived by a son, Richard W. Smallwood of Chardon; a daughter, Janet Hauter of Huntsburg; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Smallwood of Middlefield.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988; son Johnny in 1956; two brothers, John and Ralph Ratzenberger; and one granddaughter.
Service is 11 a.m. Thursday at the Russell Golden Rule Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield. The Rev. Richard W. Smallwood of Chardon will officiate. Burial will be in the Middlefield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. a the funeral home.

Dorothy A. Opatrny
MIDDLEFIELD - Dorothy Ann Opatrny, 88, of Middlefield died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Briar Hill Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 26, 1912 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Anthony and Rose (Pisek) Salak. She had been a resident of Briar Hill Nursing Home since 1990, prior to that time Lyndhurst and Richmond Heights.
She was a baker at Brush High School from 1961 to 1977 and before that was the cook and baker at St. Pascal Baylon Church in Richmond Heights for five years.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Chardon, president of the Mothers of the Deaf Club in Cleveland, fundraiser for AG Bell School of the Deaf in Cleveland and a member of Geauga County Department of Aging Senior Center in Chardon.
She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include; sons, Daniel of Chardon, Edward of Montville, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren and her sister Mary Ann Peck of Nokomis, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband James in 1962, son James in 1982 and her parents.
Funeral mass will be Monday at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Church, 401 North St., Chardon.
Burial will be at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon.
Ritondaro Funeral Home of 126 South St., Chardon, is handling arrangements.
Vernon Hosmer
BURTON TOWNSHIP - Vernon "Lee" Hosmer, 53, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at his home following a short illness.
He was born Sept. 21, 1948, in Cleveland, the son of Vernon L. and Mary (Kalinowski) Hosmer and had lived in Burton five years, coming from Warren.
Mr. Hosmer graduated from Burton High School in 1966.
He was a line inspector at GM Lordstown for 30 years, retiring in August 2000. He was a member of the United Auto Workers local in Warren.
He was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, watching movies and fishing. He also liked watching historic documentaries.
Survivors include his mother; a brother, Roger of Orwell; and a daughter, Theresa.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1959.
Service is noon Monday at the Russell Golden Rule Funeral Service, 15670 West High St., Middlefield, with the Rev. Jay McPhilips of St. Helens Church, Newbury Township, officiating. Burial will be in Slitor Cemetery, Burton Township.
Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
William D. Reed
BURTON – William D. Reed, 65, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 16, 1935, in Cleveland, the son of Dr. William A. and Lois (Darsie) Reed. He was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Reed was a graduate of Burton High School class of 1955. He served in the Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Reed married Darlene (Bartholomew) June 29, 1957 in Burton.
He was a foreman at the Geauga County Highway Department and retired in 1988.
Mr. Reed enjoyed photography and collecting war memorabilia.
He was a lifelong member of the Burton Congregational Church United Church of Christ. He was a member of the Burton Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years and the American Legion Post 459 of Burton for 15 years.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Major Keith Reed stationed in the Pacific on Johnson Island; two daughters, Kim E. Mullet of Parkman and Karen D. Grimmett of Troy; a sister, Elizabeth A. Cupp of Burton; and grandchildren, Byron Childs, William and Matthew Grimmett and Megan, Melinda and Christopher Matthews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Burton Congregational Church-United Church of Christ with the Rev. Harry Buch officiating. Burial will be in Slitor Cemetery in Burton.

Michael J. Turkoc
BURTON TOWNSHIP - Michael J. Turkoc, 82, of Burton Township, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Geauga Regional Hospital.
He was born June 20, 1918, in Cleveland to John and Stella Turkoc.
He married Theresa Rugel in 1946. He was a resident of Burton Township since 1946.
Mr. Turkoc was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant in the 340th Bomb Squadron during World War II, serving in the European Theatre.
He was awarded the Bronze Star for his mechanical talents while serving in the Air Force. He was an avid reader, he enjoyed fishing, building things and working with antiques and clocks.
He was a mechanic for most of his life.
Survivors include his wife Theresa; daughter, Kim Vanderwist of South Russell Village; sons, Michael J. of Boston, Don of Lodi, Calif., Gerald of Chardon, Mark of Burton; sisters, Josephine Sorozak of Florida, Sophie Meier of Montville Township, Helen Howels of Middlefield, Dorothy Royak of Cleveland; brothers, Joseph, Walter of Arizona, John of Cleveland; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Stella Katanik and brother Steve.
The family will host a gathering for family and friends at the home of his daughter, Kim Vanderwist, 67 Maple Hill Drive, South Russell on Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Arrangements are being handled by Burr Funeral Home and Cremation 116 South St., Chardon.

Mr. Russ was a veteran of the US Army, during the Korean War. He was a member of the Refrigeration Service Engineer’s Society and a Charter Captain in Painesville. Susvivors include his wife, Cecile (nee: Kostansek) Russ of Newbury Twp., daughters, Cheryl (Robert) Sevald of Burton Twp., Bonnie (Paul) Spangler of Munson Twp., and Karen Russ of Middleburg Hts., son James (Julia) Russ III of University Hts., grandchildren Sara Sevald, Robyn Spangler and Amanda Spangler. John K. Shiffler

He was a graduate of Zanesville Lash High School, Class of 1940, Veteran of US Navy, World War II, Pacific Theater. He also graduated from Otterbein College, where until 8 years ago, he held the record for scoring the highest points in a basketball game. He was an active member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge. Mr. Shiffler loved the sport and competition of athletics. He was a high school teacher and coached basketball and baseball. He was then a salesman for the remainder of his career. Survivors include his wife Anne Shiffler of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, daughters Cathy (Tom) McCarthy of Cincinnati, Connie (Alan) Dils of Cincinnati, Kathryn MacKinnon of Germantown, MD, Tricia (Paul) LaMarca of Houston, TX, son Jay (D. Ann) Shiffler of Georgetown, TX, 10 Grandchildren, 2 Step-Sons and 4 Step-grandchildren. His parents Carl William and Rizza Hope (nee: Shipley) Shiffler, former manager of the Bass Lake Community and Golf Course of Chardon, 1st Wife Marjorie May (nee: King) Shiffler, 2nd Wife Carolyn (nee: Hanson) Shiffler, and brother William Shiffler are all deceased.
