Charles Chutas
COLEBROOK TOWNSHIP - Charles Chutas, 78, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at his home.
He was born Dec. 5, 1923, in Colebrook, the son of John (Czitas) and Anna (Liutkievicius) Chutas, immigrants from Lithuania.
Mr. Chutas was a lifelong resident of Colebrook, where he owned and operated a dairy farm and sawmill. He also worked as a structural ironworker for Ironworkers Local 17, retiring in 1986.
He was a 1942 graduate of Colebrook High School.
He married Mary Ellen Ulrich on March 20, 1943, in Jefferson.
He served in the European Theater during World War II, as a U.S. Army paratrooper in Company F, Troop 513 of the 17th Airborne Division. Mr. Chutas served his country in the Battle of the Bulge and during the invasion of Germany, jumping across the Rhine. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Arrowhead and European African, Middle Eastern Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, during his service.
Mr. Chutas was a civic-minded individual. He was commander of Colebrook Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7424. At the time the VFW built the Little League field in Colebrook. He served as the manager of the Little League team.
Mr. Chutas was a scoutmaster in 1963 of Colebrook's Cub Scout Pack 45, Later becoming scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 72 of Orwell. He worked with the Scouts until 1972.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Triandria 780; Colebrook School Board; VFW Post 3967 Green Township; and American Legion Post 719, Orwell. He was co-president of the Colebrook Homecoming Committee for more than 20 years, was Democratic Committee chairman for Colebrook Township, and was Colebrook Township Trustee for six years.
Mr. Chutas single-handedly researched and coordinated fund raising efforts to establish monuments in Colebrook for Veterans of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. In 1965, Mr. Chutas received the Ashtabula County Wildlife Conservation Person of the Year Award.
He enjoyed time in "the office" visiting with family and friends. He was especially fond of spending time with his grandchildren. He loved people and in particular the Democratic Party.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; a daughter, Kathleen Kaderly of Painesville; two sons, Ronald of Colebrook, Donald of Marysville, Mich.; three sisters, Julia Bragga of Jefferson, Amelia Rogers of Kingsville Township, Helen Kasnie of Ft. Pierce, Fla. and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Service is 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Paine-Simpson Funeral Home, 140 East Main St., Orwell, with the Rev. Walter Luke of the Biblical Teaching Fellowship Ministry of Strongsville officiating.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where a Masonic service will be observed at 7:45 p.m.

Agnes E. Toward
SOLANA BEACH, Calif. - Agnes E. "Nance" Toward PhD., 67, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Hospice of San Diego, San Diego, Calif.
She was born Jan. 1, 1934, in Euclid, the daughter of William R. and Isabella Agnes (Hart) Toward.
She grew up in Euclid and spent time in South America, Spain, California and New Mexico. She was a graduate of Hiram College, Case Western Reserve University and the University of Texas.
She was a teacher and interpreter.
Survivors include a brother, Stephen Toward of Madison.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial service is 10 a.m. Friday at Acacia Park Cemetery, 1880 SOM Center Road, Mayfield Heights. The service also will memorialize her mother, Isabelle, who died July 31, 2001.
No calling hours will be observed.
Evelyn R. Smith
EUCLID Evelyn R. Smith, 89, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, in California.
She was born April 10, 1911, in Spring Hill, W. Va., the daughter of Phebe (Stover) and Hennen Hundley.
Mrs. Smith was an assembler in the Coiling Department at General Electric for 29 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Smith in 1966; four sisters, Opal, Jewel, Glory and Violet; and four brothers, Malcolm, Doyle, Otis and Rondal.
A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at North Madison Cemetery, Hubbard Road.
The Behm Family Funeral Homes in Madison, is in charge of arrangements.
JoAnn H. Thompson
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - JoAnn H. Thompson, 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, in Indianapolis.
She was born Sept. 5, 1920, in Cleveland, the daughter of Stanley and Grace Hacha.
She was a 1938 graduate of Harbor High School, earned a degree at Kent State University and a master's degree in library science at Western Reserve University.
She was a librarian at Ashtabula Public Library while her husband, Robert M. Thompson, served during World War II.
A homemaker, she did volunteer work at Planned Parenthood of Central and Southern Indiana and Indianapolis, and the Marion County Public Library services center.
Survivors include a son, Stephen Thompson of Tucson, Ariz.; three daughters: Martha Drane and Kathrine Thompson, both of Indianapolis, and Elizabeth Thompson of Chicago; a grandson, Matthew Drane; and a brother, Thomas Hacha of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother, Robert Hacha.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis.
Calling hour will be 2 p.m. until time of service at the church.

Nellie A. Kelner
BELLEVUE, NE - Nellie A. Kelner, 89, former Jefferson resident, died Monday morning, August 4, 2003, at her son's residence in Bellevue, NE, where she had been residing the past seven years.
Mrs. Kelner was born December 13, 1913, in Searight, PA, the daughter of Phillip F. & Anna C. Washut, and was a Jefferson area resident most of her life, coming from Pennsylvania in 1925. She was married to Frank G. Kelner on June 8, 1946, at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church in Jefferson.
Mrs. Kelner worked at Thompson Products (TRW) in Euclid during World War II, and later worked part-time for AAA License Bureau. She was a member of St. Joseph Calasanctius Church and enjoyed traveling, playing bingo, and being with family and friends.
Survivors include a son, George T. Kelner of Bellevue, NE; two sisters, Helen F. Smolen and Rose A. Werenko; and a brother, Michael F. Washut, all of Jefferson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank in 1983; two brothers, Henry and John Washut; and two sisters in infancy, Mary and Louise.
The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2003 at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, 32 East Jefferson Street, Jefferson, with the Reverend Fr. Stephen Wassie officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.

Terrence M. Scribben
CHERRY VALLEY - Terrence M. Scribben, 42, of Cherry Valley, died at his home following a lengthy illness, on Wednesday, June 4, 2003.
He was born on November 10, 1960, the son of Michael and Geraldine (Dimnik) Scribben.
He was a member of St. Mary Church in Orwell, and also attended St. Joseph Church in Jefferson. He was a CNC Operator at Parker-Hannifin Corp. in Andover; he was a part time beef and grain farmer, enjoyed horses, traveling, and being with his family and friends.
Mr. Scribben is survived by his mother, Geraldine Scribben of Colebrook; two brothers, Michael G. Scribben of Windsor, and Tim Scribben of Colebrook; three sisters, Linda Hitchcock of Andover, Kathy Smolinski of Andover, and Patty Paris of New Lyme; and sixteen nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Michael, on August 28, 1989.
A Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, at St. Mary Church, 103 N. Maple Street, Orwell, OH 44076.
Visitation will be at the church from 10:15 until 10:45 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003.

Joseph F. Gentile
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS - Joseph Frank Gentile, 88, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Heather Hill Nursing Home in Munson Township.
He was born July 13, 1914, in Cleveland, the son of Francis and Frances (Lionti) Gentile Trianfante and lived in Euclid before moving to Mayfield Heights in 1948.
He was a graduate of the former Fenn College in Cleveland and was an engineer at Cleveland Trinidad Paving in Cleveland for 30 years, retiring in 1976.
Mr. Gentile served in the Army during World War II between June 1941 and October 1945 as staff sergeant with Service Company 474th Infantry Regiment. He served in Naples, Rome, southern France, Rhineland, central Europe and the Aleutian Islands. He earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars, Combat Infantry Badge and World War II Victory Medal.
He continued in the Army Reserve and was discharged as a sergeant in October 1948.
Mr. Gentile was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Gates Mills, the Jim Beam Bottle Club, the Good Sam Club and the Winnebago Club. He enjoyed camping and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, the former Evelyn Tamburello, whom he married Nov. 28, 1946, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Euclid; daughters Geraldine Gentile-Hogye of Willoughby Hills, Jacqueline Gentile of Mayfield Heights, Frances Folwarczny of Munson and Jo Marie Gentile of Mayfield Heights; granddaughters Diane Sloan of Concord and Cheryl Suscha of Avon; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jennie Carmigiano.
A memorial Mass will take place 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Noel Church, 35200 Chardon Road, Willoughby Hills.
