Sandra L. Wilpula
CLEVELAND Sandra Louise Wilpula, 52, of Cleveland died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at her home.
She was born Dec. 1, 1948, in Ashtabula, the daughter of John R. and Clara Ann (Pavlik) Wilpula.
In 1954, Miss Wilpula contracted respiratory poliomyelitis, which left her a paraplegic. Despite complex physical challenges, she graduated from Edgewood Senior High School in 1970 and received her bachelor's degree in social work from Kent State University in 1976. In 1981 she was honored with the Ashtabula Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award for her heroic fight to overcome her disability.
Miss Wilpula worked for Ashtabula County Community Action Agency and Ashtabula County Society for Handicapped Children and Adults before moving to Cleveland where she was employed with Services for Independent Living.
An advocate for people with disabilities throughout her life, Miss Wilpula was involved with the Offices for Services for Handicapped Students and assisted with Disability Month at the Kent Campus. While attending Kent she was also secretary to the Portage County Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. She most recently served as president of the National Association for Ventilator Patients.
Survivors include a brother, Don of Mercer, Pa.; six nephews and three nieces.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1994; her mother in 1999; a sister, Susan Marie, in 1958; and a brother, James E., in April.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Childs & Williams Funeral Home, 1440 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Carl G. Pearson
NORTHBROOK, Ill. Dr. Carl G. Pearson, 91, formerly of Ashtabula, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Glenbrook Hospital in Northbrook.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula.
Calvin C. Ryan
MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP - Calvin C. Ryan, 80, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at the Cleveland Clinic.
Born Sept. 15, 1920, in Burbank, he was the son of Joseph and Clare (Packard) Ryan and had lived in Montville for 11 years, coming from St. Petersburg, Fla., and Euclid.
He married Ruth Berg on March 21, 1941, in Cleveland .
Mr. Ryan was a steel worker for Republic Steel, now LTV, for 33 years, retiring in 1971.
A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force he served during World War II.
Mr, Ryan enjoyed photography and vegetable gardening.
Survivors include two sons, Calvin R. of Lyndhurst and Christopher of Montville Township; five grandchildren, Megan and Kevin Ryan of Lyndhurst, and Jennifer, Shawn and Carrie Ryan of Montville Township; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife on April 10, 1994.
Service is 8 p.m. Monday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon, the Rev. Robert Gaston, chaplain of Lake Hospital Systems officiating. Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery, Chardon Township.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until the time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Marian H. Lynagh
DENMARK TOWNSHIP - Marian H. Lynagh, 82, of Route 193, Denmark Township, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at the home of her nephew in New Lyme Township following a short illness.
Born March 23, 1918. in New Lyme Township, she was a daughter of Joseph and Henrietta (Van Boven) Viton and was a lifelong New Lyme/Denmark area.
She married James W. Lynagh on June 3, 1939 in Lenox Township. She was employed for 29 years at the General Electric Plant in Jefferson, retiring in 1978.
Mrs. Lynagh was a member of Dorset United Methodist Church; had been a member of the Jefferson Grange since 1937; and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1988; a brother, James Viton; and two sisters, Clara Marrison and Josephine Gilbert.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday at the Fleming Funeral Home Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Randy E. Taft
WAYNESBORO, VA - Randy E. Taft, 34, formerly of Rock Creek, died Thursday June 5, 2003, at his home in Waynesboro, VA, after a long illness.
He was born in Ashtabula but lived most of his life in Rock Creek.
Mr. Taft attended Rock Creek Elementary School and Jefferson Area High School.
Randy broke-in and trained horses at several horse ranches in VA.
Most recently he was employed at New Meadow Farms in VA.
Survivors include one son, Andrew Michael Taft; one sister, Jacqueline Taft; four brothers, Kenneth, William, Albert, and Kelly Taft; father, William Taft; step-mother, Arlene Taft; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held by Tom Allen, and burial was at the Green Lawn Cemetery in N. Kingsville.
Mildred P. Nelson
NORTHBROOK, Ill. - Mildred P. Nelson, 90, of Covenant Village of Northbrook, Northbrook, Ill., died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Glenbrook Hospital, Glenview, Ill.
Born August 28, 1912, in Ashtabula, the daughter of Anders G. and Anna Sodergren.
She had been a lifetime area resident moving to Illinois 6 1/2 years ago.
Mrs. Nelson was a graduate of Ashtabula High School. She had been employed as a secretary for the headquarters of the Ashtabula Area City Schools and also as a secretary at Thomas Jefferson School until her retirement.
She was a member of the First Covenant Church of Ashtabula.
Survivors include her son, John (Susan) Nelson, of Glenview, Illinois; one daughter, Jane (Virgil) Applequist, of Palatine, Ill.; four grandchildren, Michael (Amy) Nelson, of Palatine, Ill., Julie (Peter) Nilsen, of Northbrook, Ill., Scott (Lisa) Applequist, of Chicago, Ill., and Greg (Hilary) Applequist, of Chicago, Illinois; and three great-grandchildren, Joshua and Samantha Nelson and Caleb Nilsen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert Nelson; three brothers; and four sisters.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 21, 2003, at 7 p.m., at the Ross-Billman Funeral Home, 526 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Timothy Hedberg, of the Clear Lake Covenant Church, officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
Calling hour will be 6 p.m. Monday until the time of service at the funeral home.

Adeline E. Uhrich
MONROE TOWNSHIP - Adeline E. Uhrich, 81, of Monroe Township, died Thursday evening, April 17, 2003, at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa., where she had been admitted earlier in the day.
Born on July 15, 1921, in Cleveland, a daughter of John P. and Ella (Yuhas) Gates.
An area resident since 1970, she moved to Monroe Township with her husband from Ashtabula.
Mrs. Uhrich was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Albion, Pa., and volunteered at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home. She was a trained vocalist and enjoyed singing, music and dancing.
Survivors include her son Arvin and his wife Connie Uhrich, of Apple Valley, Calif.; her sister, Harriet and her husband Willis Trumble of Fremont, Ohio; one niece, Holly Shippy; one nephew, Wayne Trumble; and a great-niece and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Melvin on March 10, 2003; and two brothers, Ralph and Arnold Gates.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, with the Rev. Fred Poeppel of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church officiating, he will be assisted by the Rev. E. Richard Bowen of Niles, Ohio. Burial will be in Kelloggsville Cemetery.
