James E. Daniels
RICHMOND TOWNSHIP - James E. Daniels, 74, of Lake Road, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at St. Joseph Medical Center, Andover.
He was born Sept. 9, 1928, in Williamsfield, to Ralph and Arlene (Fink) Daniels.
He was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Daniels married Katherine Kume Nov. 8, 1957. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He worked as a signal maintainer with Conrail longer than 40 years, retiring in 1989. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and polka dancing.
Survivors include his wife; sons Robert W. Farmer of Saegertown, Pa., James E. Daniels Jr. of Richmond Township and Ralph S. Daniels of Geneva; daughters Theresa A. Daniels of Ravenna, Susan Michalske of Richmond Township, and Phyliss A. Daniels of Ravenna; sisters Janet Burns of Thompson, Frances White of Andover, Shirley Otto of Jefferson, Marlene Rayl of Thompson and Sherie Daniels of Andover; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother John M. Daniels.
Funeral is 8 p.m. Thursday at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 134 Prospect St., Andover.
Cremation will follow the services.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Merritt Ross Schaeffer
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.- Merritt Ross Schaeffer, Jr., 71, formerly of Ashtabula, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2001.
He was born in Toledo, then moved to Arizona 16 years ago after residing in Ashtabula for more than 30 years.
Mr. Merritt was a United States government products manager. And retired from RMI Inc.
Survivors include he wife, Norma Jean; daughters, Carrie E. Benson of Portland, Ore. and Gwen Ellen Viohi of Scottsdale and one grandson.
Arrangements were made by Messinger Indian School Mortuary, Scottsdale, Ariz.
Toni S. Tucholski
COLEBROOK - Toni S. Tucholski, 56, of Colebrook died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at UHHS Geauga Regional Hospital.
She was born Feb. 27, 1946 in Cleveland, the daughter of Jerry and Celia (Barbergiovanni) West.
Mrs. Tucholski worked in nursing and was homemaker.
She enjoyed her family, cooking, and flower gardening.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph whom she married June 1, 1974 in Cleveland; her daughter Bridgette Meadowcroft of Fort Stewart, Ga.; sons, Keven Tucholski of Fort Lee, Va., and Joseph Tucholski Jr., of Orwell; sisters, Adele Krimmel of Madison and Patricia Marsh of Cleveland; brothers, Tony Evans of Madison and Sonny Evans of Parma and grandson, Shannon Meadowcroft.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Edward Evans.
Services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday at Paine-Simpson Funeral Home, 140 East Main St., Orwell, with the Rev. Gregory Fedor of St. Mary Church officiating.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Orwell.
Calling hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
Doris M. Herman
CARROLLTON - Doris Mary Herman, 86, of Carrollton, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at Aultman Hospital in Canton.
She was born July 30, 1916 in Cleveland, the daughter of James and Anna (Polkow) Elligott.
She married Robert F. Herman on April 22, 1963, in Weirton, W.Va.
Mrs. Herman was an apartment manager with her husband.
She enjoyed playing bingo.
Survivors include her daughter, Dolores Thorp of Mechanicstown; a son, William Louis Onesta of Danville, Calif.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kathryn Camp of Madison.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert in 1993; and 12 sisters and brothers.
Services will be 2 p.m., Monday at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River St., Madison.
Burial will be in Perry Cemetery, Perry.
No calling hours will be observed.

Nelson C. Ashcraft
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. - Nelson Clark Ashcraft, 57, of Clarksburg, W.Va., formerly of Summit Park, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, in the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born May 1, 1945, in Clarksburg, W. Va., the son of the late George T. and Dorothy (Johnson) Ashcraft.
Mr. Ashcraft attended Victory High School before going into the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a member of the Meuse Argonne Post 573 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Clarksburg and the Alcoholic's Anonymous in Geneva. He was a Baptist.
He had been employed as a welder for Marion Power Shovel in Marion.
Survivors include two daughters, Kirsten Poteet of Greenville and Holly Roberson of Piqua; two brothers, Maurice Ashcraft of Clarksburg, W.Va., and James Ashcraft of Johnstown, Pa.; four sisters, Diane "Ann" Wiseman of Clarksburg, W.Va., Barbara Persinger of Fairfax, Va., Norma Gallo of Clarksburg, W.Va., and Linda Elsbury of Madison; five grandchildren, Bethanie and Gwyneth Poteet, both of Greenville, and Morgan, Cole and Caitlyn Roberson of Piqua.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Stanley, Jesse, George, Michael, and Rodney Ashcraft; and a sister, Kathy Ashcraft.
Services will be 1 p.m., Monday at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg, W.Va.
Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, where military grave side rites will be accorded by the Roy E. Parrish American Legion Post 13 Color Guard.
Calling hours will be from 1 to 9 p.m., today at the funeral home.
James S. Casteel
GILBERT, Ariz. - Dr. James Stephen Casteel, 73, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, in Clearlake Regional Hospital, Webster, Texas.
He was born Sept. 30, 1928, in Cleveland, to Creed and Rose (Welcheck) Casteel. He was a Gilbert, Ariz. resident for six years, but always had a home in the Hunting Valley/Geauga County area.
Dr. Casteel married Lorraine St. John Jan. 9, 1954, in New Bedford, Mass.
He graduated from Newbury High School in 1946. He attended Kent State University and completed his pre-medical training at Ohio State University. He was a 1962 graduate of California College of Medicine, after completing his internship at L.A. County Medical Center. From 1962 to 1978, he had a family practice in Tustin, Calif., and had a family practice in Bainbridge Township from 1978 to 1982, when he retired.
Dr. Casteel served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
He was the president of the University of Irvine, California College of Medicine Alumni Association and was chief of staff at Tustin Community Hospital in California in 1972, after serving as vice chief of staff and emergency room director in 1971. In 1967, he was appointed president of the Santa Ana-Tustin 20/30 Club.
No matter where Dr. Casteel lived or traveled, his heart and home were in Ohio. He had a great love of music and enjoyed playing the trombone in the Doctor's Dance Band and later played the bagpipes in the Cleveland Kilty Band. He loved the study of architecture and was a visionary in seeing the possibilities in every home he bought and remodeled. His favorite pastime was mowing the grounds at his Ohio farm on his tractor. He enjoyed restoring classic cars and was president of the Rolls Royce Owner's Club of Southern California. He also loved to collect miniature car models that he shared with his grandchildren.
His life was rich in friendships and he found his greatest joy in family gatherings throughout the year.
Survivors include his wife; daughter Suzanne Wilson of Houston, Texas; sons James Casteel Jr. of Burlington, Ky., Patrick Casteel of Phoenix, Ariz., Scott Casteel of Fairfax, Va. and Rick Casteel of Mill Valley, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Laverne Hess and Dorothy Bartos, and brother C. Lawrence Casteel.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Helen's Catholic Church, 12060 Kinsman Road, Newbury Township, officiated by Father Jay McPhillips of the church. Burial will be in Newbury Center Cemetery.
Visitation is 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon.
Richard D. Tantari
PERRYSBURG - Richard D. Tantari, 66, formerly of Conneaut, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at his home in Perrysburg.
He was born April 17, 1935, in Conneaut, the son of John and Thelma (Snyder) Tantari.
Mr. Tantari was a 1953 graduate of Conneaut High School, and a 1971 graduate of Gannon University.
He was a mechanical engineer employed at Emco-Wheaton, Toledo Scale, and for the U.S. government with Teledyne CAE and Lima Tank Plant, where he retired in 1998.
Mr. Tantari was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and an avid and loyal Cleveland and Ohio State sports fan.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Yvonne A. (Goodale), whom he married May 21, 1955; a daughter, Faith A. Spink; three sons, Mark R., Chris D., and Greg A. Tantari; a brother, Allen Tantari of Conneaut; and 11 grandchildren, Amanda, Michael and David Spink, Desiree, Tara, Devon, Brandon, Cody, Joshua, Anna, and Emma Tantari.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Toledo, with the Rev. Joseph Kaelber Jr., officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
