Sandra K. Dixon-Paley
SOLON - Sandra K. Dixon-Paley, 55, of Solon, Ohio, formerly of Madison, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at LakeEast Hospital in Painesville. She was born on November 6, 1947, the daughter of Lester William and Ethel Marie (Maier) Dixon.
Sandra was a graduate of Ohio University, and a graduate of Madison High School. She was a member of the Western Reserve Calligraphy Group in Cleveland, and she enjoyed her home and gardening. Sandra worked at Smurfit-Stone Graphic Design.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Richard Paley, whom she married May 19, 1985, who died in August, 2001; her father, Lester Dixon; and her sister, Rosemarie.
Survivors include her mother, Ethel Dixon.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River Street, Madison, Ohio. Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at 8:30 p.m. at the Behm Family Funeral Home with Rev. William Alvey, of Park United Methodist Church in Madison, officiating.
EDWARD "EDDIE" POKAN
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS - Edward "Eddie" Pokan, 86, a resident of Highland Heights, passed away at the Hospice House in Cleveland.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at the Highland 6th Presbyterian Church. Calling hour will be held at the church from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. before the service.
Burial will be at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland.
Ancil A. Pierce
SYLACAUGA, Ala. - Ancil A. Pierce, 80, of Sylacauga, Ala., died Feb. 20, 2003, at Talladega Health Care in Talladega, Ala.
He was born June 6, 1922, in Oakwood, the son of John S. and Myrtle (Carpenter) Pierce.
He worked in boiler maintenance for the True Temper Corp.
He married Elinor M. Endress July 26, 1969, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Geneva.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Sylavon Baptist Church in Sylacauga.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard Hall of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Ansel Pierce of Geneva; two daughters, Nora Tirabasso of Fairport Harbor, and Joyce Brown of Geneva; two brothers, John Pierce of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Harold Pierce of Smithville, Texas; two sisters, Maida Tingley of Geneva, and Dorothy Crislip of Ashtabula; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Geneva. The Rev. Charles E. Althoff will officiate.
Instead of giving flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Alzheimer's Association.
John Recher
MELBOURNE, Fla. - John Recher, 63, of Melbourne, Fla., died Monday, March 24, 2003, at Wuesthoff Medical Center, Rockledge, Fla.
He was born March 27, 1939, in Cleveland, the son of Frank J. and Margaret (Gromofsky) Recher.
A 1958 graduate of Spencer High School in Geneva, Mr. Recher served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He was an oil exploration technician and traveled throughout the world. He was an avid reader.
He is survived by his mother, of Geneva; two brothers, Frank Recher of Melbourne, Fla., and Louis Recher of Richmond, Va.; four sisters, Mary Laffey of Ashtabula, Chris Kohli of Harpersfield, and Connie King and Vicky Whelpley, both of Geneva.
He was preceded in death by his father, in 1993; and a sister, Betty Perry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Assumption Catholic Church, 594 W. Main St., Geneva, with the Rev. Paul Tobin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Harpersfield Township Cemetery.
Calling hours are 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 175 S. Broadway, Geneva, 44041.
Richard B. Vort
WINDSOR - Richard B. Vort, 83, died Monday, March 24, 2003, at Blossom Hill Care Center after a long battle with cancer.
He was born July 30, 1919, in Akron, the son of Joseph and Grace (Cleeve) Vort. He married Velma S. Jambor Dec. 27, 1973.
Mr. Vort was employed at Flambeau Plastics (formerly Vichek Plastics) in Middlefield for 40 years. He retired in 1982 as tool shop foreman.
He served with the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II.
Mr. Vort enjoyed league bowling, woodworking, reading several daily newspapers, and his tractor, which provided him with much relaxation and enjoyment on his country property.
He is survived by his wife.
Service is 11 a.m. Thursday at Paine-Simpson Funeral Home, 140 E. Main St., Orwell, with the Rev. Gerald Sanders of the Parkman Congregational Church officiating.
Burial will follow in Windsor Cemetery.
Visitation is 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Edwin E. Graves
COLUMBUS - Edwin Eugene Graves, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Riverside Hospital, Columbus.
He was formerly of Upper Arlington.
Mr. Graves was born Dec. 26, 1916, in Struthers, the son of Frank Edwin and Iva (Sommers) Graves.
He graduated from Rock Creek High School and Ohio State University with a bachelor of science degree in 1939.
Mr. Graves taught science and mathematics in Ashtabula County for two years.
In 1941, he joined Battelle Memorial Institute where he worked for 40 years, first as a research engineer and then in management positions. He also worked on the U.S. Atomic Energy Program while at Battelle and was involved with the development of xerography; participated in the design and construction of a U.S. Navy radio telescope; and was manager of international marketing.
Mr. Graves held three U.S. patents and authored several technical publications. He served as president of the Technical Association of the Graphic Arts and was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church for about 50 years; served as a chairman of the finance and property committees; was a member of the Board of Trustees; and was a member of the United Methodist Men.
Mr. Graves was active in the Big Brothers Association for 12 years and served nine years as a scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 261.
He was one of the founders of the OSU Stadium Scholarship Dormitory Alumni Society, served a term as president, and was a recipient of their Outstanding Alumni Award. Mr. Graves was a member of the OSU Alumni Association and also active in the Battelle Retiree's Association, the King Avenue Alumni, Probus and the Trotters Chase Condo Association.
He was an avid golfer and belonged to the Ohio State University Golf Course, where he proudly shot a hole-in-one on the Scarlet Course in 1970; and he served as a volunteer for the Muirfield Memorial Tournament.
Survivors include his daughter, Marcia Parson of Newark; two sons, Michael of Columbus and Marc of Mentor; three grandsons, Jay Parsons of Columbus; Greg Parsons of New York, N.Y., and Patrick Graves of Mentor; a brother, William H. of Fort Collins, Colo.; and a sister, Cleo Callahan of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elizabeth, in 2000; and a brother, Donald.
A memorial service was held Jan. 17, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Columbus. Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Delaware.

Lillian A. Swope
HARTSGROVE TOWNSHIP - Lillian Alice Swope, 80, of Ireland Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at UHHS Geauga Regional Hospital, Claridon Township.
She was born April 12, 1921, in Cleveland, the daughter of Sanders Joseph and Lillian Florence (Bluhm) Wagoner.
Mrs. Swope had been in poor health for several years.
She was a housewife and married Bernard A. Swope on Oct. 4, 1941.
Mrs. Swope was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Thompson Township, and was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Pymatuning Post 9519, Andover.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Patricia G. Linn of Hartsgrove Township, Susan J. Swope of Cleveland and Sandra L. Potenza of Mentor; four grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Scot Berghauser; and sister, Genevieve Jean.
Service is 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 8091 Plank Road, Thompson Township, with the Rev. Ross Fees officiating. The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, District 7 and Post 9519 will take part in the memorial service.
Burial of cremated remains will be in Hartsgrove Cemetery following the service.
No calling hours will be observed.
