Gary A. Pratt, age 63, Lenox-New Lyme Rd., Lenox Twp., died unexpectedly Monday afternoon after collapsing giving the Memorial Day address at the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the Cobra Helicopter at Oakdale Cemetery.
He was born May 17, 1949 in Ashtabula, the son of Harry G. & Madge (Oliver) Pratt and has lived in the Jefferson area all of his life. Gary was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving with the Americal Unit during the Vietnam War. He was a senior executive sales representative with AmeriGas, where he has been employed the past 40 years.
Gary was the commander of the In-Country Vietnam Veterans, was a member of the American Legion Post #103, the VFW Post #943, the DAV Chpt. #39, the Ohio Valley Military Collectors Assoc., Tuscan Lodge #342, F. & A. M. Gary hosted the annual In-Country Vietnam Vets reunion every year. He was a military history buff, loved the outdoors, was a great cook and also raced stock cars in his younger days.
Survivors include his wife, Pamela J. (Lloyd) Pratt whom he married on May 20, 2006 in Ashtabula, two step-children, Kyle M. Simon, currently on deployment with the U. S. Navy & Brittany S. Simon of Newport News, VA, three grandchildren Xavier & Selena Vera & Kylee Simon and a sister Judy A. O’Toole of Cleveland.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sherry Hugert.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:00 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Robert Leonard officiating. Burial will be in Lenox Center Cemetery where military honors will be in cooperation of In-Country Vietnam Veterans, American Legion Post #103 & VFW Post #943. Calling hours will be Sunday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM and from 6:00PM to 8:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 1240 E. 9th St., Rm. 1015, Cleveland, OH 44199.

Elsie A. Childs, 86 of Vine St. Geneva died Saturday (May 26th) at University Hospitals of Cleveland. She was born August 30, 1925 in Cleveland the daughter of Robert and Anna (Kubitzki) Plotz.
She enjoyed going to casinos; Garage selling, watching TV; the Cleveland Indians;she loved vacationing in Hawaii; gardening where she loved teaching her children to enjoy Nature and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Surviving her are her six children; Donald O. Childs of Geneva, Dennis L. (Denise) Childs of North Kingsville, Robert A. Childs of Ashtabula, Janet A. Maltby-Welker of Geneva, Debora A. (Gene) Morgan of Geneva and Dianne Brown of North Kingsville; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Medlen, Brian Frey, Tara Maltby, Tasha Maltby, Cristy Hallam, Derrick Childs, Lauren Childs, Brett Morgan and Brandon Morgan and six great-grandchildren and a brother, William Plotz of Clinton, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert O. Childs in 2007; one sister, Irene Ritley and three brothers, Elmer, Alfred and Clarence Plotz.
Funeral service will be Thursday (May 31st) at 1:00 PM at the Geneva Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 323 South Broadway, Geneva with Rev. Larry Wade officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Geneva at a later date.
Calling hours will be Thursday (May 31st) from 11:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Nation Breast Cancer Research Center; The American Heart/American Stroke Association or to the Northwest Ambulance District. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Mattie L. Newhard

Mattie “Dot” L. Newhard, 92 formerly of North Kingsville died Friday (Sept. 7th) at the Heartland of Marietta in Marietta, Ohio. She was born February 27, 1920 in Hillsboro, Mississippi the daughter of Robert and Minnie (Sudduth) Rigby and has lived most of her life in North Kingsville.
She had taught school in Mississippi before moving to Ohio and then had substitute taught at the North Kingsville School. She was a playground aide at North Kingsville School for 25 years She had been a Girl Scout Leader for over 20 years. She had enjoyed flower gardening.
Surviving her are two daughters, Mary “Betsy” Hupp of Marietta and Nancy Brown of Columbus; four grandchildren, Michael Walker, Brian Walker, Leah Etherington and Aaron Brown and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Odis Newhard in 2007; four brothers, Lamar Rigby, Angus Rigby, Earl Rigby and Paul Rigby and by a sister, Mary Wallace.
Graveside services will be Monday (Sept, 10th) at 2:00 PM at the Eastlake Cemetery, Route 193, North Kingsville with Rev. Shane Nanney of the Eastside Presbyterian Church officiating.

Raylene M. Marinchak

Raylene M. Marinchak, age 60, S. Market St., Jefferson, died Wednesday morning at the Ashtabula Co. Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Kingsville Twp.
She was born March 1, 1952 in Ashtabula, the daughter of the late George & Dorothy (Colucci) Marinchak and has resided in this area all of her life. Raylene was a graduate of Ashtabula High School and received her bachelor and masters degrees from Kent State University. She retired in 2005 from the Grand Valley School System where she taught Special Education and in the elementary school for 31 years.
She is a member of St. Joseph Calasanctius Church in Jefferson. She enjoyed quilting, doing activities at the W. Farmington Senior Center and being with friends.
She is survived by a brother & sister-in-law, Bradley & Becky Marinchak of Jefferson and two nieces, Kim (Brian) Mimnaugh and Darcy (Al) Hurst.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:30 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson with Mary McKee leading the service. Burial of cremains will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 9:30-11:30 A. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004.
Sharon K. Hassett
April 7, 1946 - September 1, 2012
Sharon Kay Hassett born on April 7, 1946 passed away on September 1st with her immediate family and closest friends at her side after struggling for several years with a hereditary liver disease at her home in Ashtabula.
Sharon lived to the fullest by laughing often, caring deeply, giving selflessly and cherishing those she loved. Her greatest joy was in watching her two grandsons grow into young men. Sharon enjoyed watching birds and swimming in her back yard.
Many friends and acquaintances will remember Sharon from the times when she shared stories with them as she waited on them while managing the Ashtabula down town Liquor Store, Lake Avenue Dollar General and as a Lead Cashier at Tops on the West Ave. Sharon also managed Dairy Mart and a Toy store during her work career.
Sharon was preceded in death by her father, John Hassett and her uncle, Jim Hassett as well as a brother and a sister. She is survived by her partner in life of many years, William Orqvist; her daughter, Robin (Terry) Mayle and two grandsons, TJ Mayle and Greg Mayle and many siblings.
At the request of Sharon there will not be a traditional funeral. Those wishing to remember Sharon with a monetary donation may do so to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave. Ashtabula, Ohio who provided excellent care, compassion and understanding to Sharon, her family and closest friends for the last several months of her life. John L. Pizzoferrato

John L. Pizzoferrato, age 74, died Thursday morning in the arms of his daughters at his residence following a short illness.
He was born July 2, 1938 in Steubenville, the son of John & Margaret (DeLeonardis) Pizzoferrato and has resided with his daughter, Stacy Carothers the past 14 months, coming from Smithfield. Mr. Pizzoferrato was a veteran of the U. S. Marines. He was married to Margaret J. Hall on September 9, 1960 at the First Presbyterian Church in Steubenville. Mr. Pizzoferrato was a retired truck driver with Weircove Moving & Storage.
Mr. Pizzoferrato was a former member of the Mingo Sportsman Club and the Jefferson Sportsman Club. He was currently a member of the Pine Valley Sportsman Club and the V. F. W., Post #943. He was an avid trap shooter and enjoyed fishing and being with his family.
Survivors include two daughters, Stacy L. (Fred) Carothers of Jefferson & Sherry A. Turnbull of Brilliant, four grandchildren, Anna (Jeremy) Gill, Sara (Eddie Kincaid) Carothers, Ryan (Nikki) Turnbull & Justin (Ashley) Turnbull, four great-grandchildren, Kennedy & Kamryn Kincaid and Lily & Lucas Gill, a brother, Dan Pizzoferrato of Smithfield and seven step-brothers & sisters. “Besides losing our father, we have lost a great friend. He will be in our hearts forever.”
His parents, his wife, Margaret in 2011 and a sister, Gloria Dayton all preceded him in death.
No services or calling hours will be held. The Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, is handling arrangements.
Twila M. Ferry
October 25, 1928 - August 29, 2012
Services: September 7th, 2012 at Twila M. Ferry, 83 of Brandt Rd., Harpersfield Township died Wednesday (Nov. 29th) at her home. She was born October 25, 1928 in Painesville, Ohio the daughter of Wallace R. and Mildred (Sheldon) Bartlett.
Twila was a 1946 graduate of Ashtabula High School and attended Oberlin Business School. She enjoyed her friendships and gathering with her Ashtabula High Class mates the “Lunch & Bunch”.
She had worked at Item Fiber and as a Patient Rep. at Ashtabula County Medical Center. She was a former member of the Congregational Church in Ashtabula. She was head of the Campfire Girls in Geneva for many years. She enjoyed and was a active member of the Geneva Senior Citizen’s Band “Off Our Rockers”.
Surviving her are three daughters, Susan (Michael) Winters, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; Linda Routzahn of Venus, Pa. and Kathy (Patrick) Arnold of Harpersfield.; four grandchildren, Michael D. Winters II, Erin Routzahn, Kimberly (Roger) Bentley and Ashley Roth and three great-grandchildren, James, Katie and Julie Bentley. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, William in 1985.
