Richard A. Bessant
January 15, 1935 - October 11, 2014
Services: October 16th, 2014 at 11:00 A. M.

Richard A. Bessant, age 79, S. Ridge W., Saybrook Twp., died Saturday morning in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.

He was born January 15, 1935 in Ashtabula, the son of the late Leland G. & Gladys I. (Christiansen) Bessant and has been an area resident all of his life. He was a 1952 graduate of Ashtabula High School and attended Kent State University Ashtabula Campus. Mr. Bessant retired in 1988 from Rockwell International Brake Division after 35 years of service. Other employments over the years include Redbrook Boat Club, Oros Builders, Springwood Products, Maple Ridge Golf Course and Post Lumber.

He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, deacon, trustee and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Bessant was active with the Boy Scouts of America as a scoutmaster, committeeman, cubmaster, merit badge counselor and Weblow leader. He was an avid runner, biker and walker. He officiated basketball and volleyball, was commissioner of the Saybrook Boys Baseball League where he coached several teams. He took pride in his home, garden and yard and loved to spend time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara A. (Spring) Bessant, whom he married on July 3, 1954 in Lawrenceburg, IN, three children, Catherine A. Moss of West Palm Beach, FL, Richard L. Bessant & William R. (Victoria) Bessant, both of Ashtabula, eight grandchildren, Xavier, Kevin, Heather, Tiffany, Sara, Cassie, James & Sharon, six great-grandchildren, Alex, Olivia, Carmelo, Tyler, Grant & Neaveh, a sister, Carol (David) Crudele of Avon and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 11:00 A. M. at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1342 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula, with the former pastor, Rev. Kevin Horrigan officiating. A visitation will be held Thursday at the church from 10-11 A. M. prior to the service.

Additional calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6-8 P. M. at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula. In lieu of flowers, the family wants contributions directed to Trinity Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, at the above address or envelopes will be available. Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and staff have been honored to serve the Richard Bessant family.

A. Louise Barnes
- October 10, 2014
Services: October 18th, 2014 at 11:00 A. M.

A. Louise Barnes, age 92, 3600 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, died Friday October 10, 2014 in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.

She was born December 24, 1921 in Bluefield, WV, the daughter of Courtney H. & Annie Lee (Mack) Scruggs, moving to Cherry Valley Twp. in 1954 from Bluefield and living in Ashtabula the past 15 years. Mrs. Barnes worked for the federal government for a short time while in Bluefield then retired as a nurse’s aide at Charlotte Nursing Home with more than 15 years of service.

She was a former member of the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church and a current member of the Jefferson Community Church of God in Christ where she was the birthday steward and enjoyed bible study and Sunday school. She volunteered at WCVJ Christian radio station, assisting with Bible study and mail correspondence. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, cooking and gardening and was a big fan of WWE Wrestling.

Survivors include three children, Anthony L. Barnes of Bedford Hts., Eric G. Barnes & Kyle L. Barnes, both of Ashtabula, five grandchildren, Donald, Lee, Stacy, Amber & Chyvon, nine great-grandchildren, a sister, Bulah Mitchell of Cleveland Hts., two sister-in-laws, Mildred Grady of Ashtabula & Leola Barnes of Richmond, VA and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband, Essic G. Barnes, Jr., son, Essic G. Barnes, III and brothers, Robert & John Scruggs.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 at 11:00 A. M. at the Jefferson Community Church of God in Christ, 1381 St. Rt. 167, Jefferson, with Pastor Isaac Chappell as the lead celebrant. Burial will be in Cherry Valley Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday from 10-11 A. M. at the church prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Make A Wish Foundation, 6060 Rockside Woods Blvd. N., Sutie 315, Independence, OH 44131, envelopes will also be at the church. The Jefferson Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, has been honored to serve the A. Louise Barnes family.

Hilda M. Springer
October 31, 1910 - August 20, 2012
Services: August 24th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Hilda Mae Springer, age 101, died Monday, at the Jefferson Healthcare where she had been a resident since September of 2009.
She was born October 31, 1910 in Selbyville, W.Va. to the daughter of Fred and Iza (Harlan) Stutzman. She moved to Ohio in 1913 to a farm located in Griggs Corners and later to a farm in Lenox.
Hilda attended Lenox School and finished high school in Jefferson, graduating in 1929. She worked in Cleveland before here marriage to Harold Springer on May 10, 1939 at the Lenox Parsonage. She and her husband owned and operated Springer Farms.
She was the first female bus driver for the Jefferson School District. She was on the Ashtabula County Farm Bureau Board of Trustees where she received the distinguished Service Award in 1989, the Dairy Farm Family Award in 2000. She was awarded the citizen of the year for Lenox Township in 1999. She was very active in the PTO serving on many committees and also very active at the Lenox Federated Church (now known as Lenox Christian Fellowship Church).
Her hobbies were cooking, baking, sewing quilts and crocheting afghans. She had given each of her grandchildren two quilts and an afghan. She loved to have company and to entertain. Her favorite time was being with her family.
She was a member of the Lenox Federated Church and also attended the Jefferson Methodist Church in her later years.
Survivors include her daughter Joyce (Lincoln) Morris of Jefferson, and a son Larry(Peggy) Springer of Lenox, daughter-in-law, Linda Springer, eight grandchildren, Beth Waldron, Amy Green, Susan Lapps, Denise Abfall, Michelle Jurcenko, Jodi Richmond, Melissa Bertini and Matthew Springer, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold in 2005, and two sons, Norman “Sonny” Springer in 1950 and Richard “Dick” Springer in April of 2012, a sister, Cleo Tisch, four brothers, Carl, Raymond, Charles and Oscar Stutzman.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 24th at 11:00 A.M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of Jefferson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Rays Corners Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jefferson United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or to the Women’s Association of the Lenox Christian Fellowship Church.

Miriam A. Kurth
July 8, 1934 - August 18, 2012
Services: August 23rd, 2012 at 10:30 A. M.
Miriam A. Kurth, age 78, Evening Star Dr., Roaming Shores, died Saturday morning at her residence.
She was born July 8, 1934 in Cleveland, the daughter of Julius & Elisabeth (Aumuller) Hessenthaler and has lived in Roaming Shores since 1993, coming from North Olmstead. She was married to Don Kurth on August 6, 1955 in North Olmstead. Mrs. Kurth was supervisor of collections for Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. for 41 years, retiring in 1992.
She is survived by a sister, Rita (David) McKenzie of Winter Green, VA.
Her parents, her husband, Don in March this year and a twin sister, Caroline Hayes, all preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Fred Grimm of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be Thursday at 2:00 P. M. at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Westlake.
Visitation will be Thursday from 10-10:30 A. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective League, 5970 Green Rd., Kingsville, OH 44048.

Jack V. Roach
May 17, 1941 - August 17, 2012
Services: August 21st, 2012 at 2:00 P. M.
Jack V. Roach, age 71, of Mingo Junction and former area resident, died Thursday afternoon with family by his side at the Trinity West Hospital in Steubenville following a short illness.
He was born May 17, 1941 in Warren, the son of Harry V. & Pauline E. (Sparling) Roach. Jack was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving on the USS Lake Champlain. He is a retired truck driver and was also active for many years with the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Dept.
Jack attended the United Presbyterian Church in Mingo Junction and was a member of the American Legion Post in Cambridge. He enjoyed reading, traveling, volunteering for the Ashtabula Co. Antique Engine Club and attending his annual Navy ship’s reunions. He especially enjoyed his time with his family and three grandsons.
Survivors include two children, Randy (Sammy) Roach and their son, Brandon of Follansbee, WV & Tamara (Jeff) Green and their sons, Alan & Matthew of Weirton, WV, his girlfriend, Sara Ketola of Jefferson and his first wife, Mary Lou Simpson of Erie, PA.
His parents, a sister, Nancy A. Taylor, his second wife, Charlotte Roach and a step-son, Michael Kidder, all preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 P. M. at the Jefferson Home of the Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson with the Pastor Kenn Sickle of the United Presbyterian Church in Mingo Junction officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Andover, where Geneva Post #6846 will offer full military honors.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 12-2 P. M. at the funeral home prior to the services. Memorial contributions may be directed to the United Presbyterian Church, 650 McLister Ave., Mingo Junction, OH 43938 or the Ashtabula Co. Antique Engine Club, P. O. Box 168, Williamsfield, OH 44093.

Lawrence J. Quickel
October 6, 1935 - August 17, 2012

QUICKEL, Lawrence (Larry) James Sr. of Madison, Oh, entered into rest August 17, 2012.
Dearly beloved husband of 40 years to Mary (nee Kovach). Beloved father of Terri (Frank) Bartle, Kevin (Anna) Downs, and Karen (Dan) Keating; loving grandfather of 10; great-grandfather of two. Proceeded in death by his sons Lawrence Quickel Jr. and Ken Downs. Larry retired from Kennametal in 1988. He will be greatly missed by all of his many family and friends.

Donald Speer
September 12, 1932 - August 12, 2012

Donald G. Speer, age 79, of Stanhope-Kelloggsville Road, Dorset, died late Sunday (Aug. 12th) evening at Ashtabula County Medical Center in the Hospice Unit. He was born September 12, 1932 in Ashtabula, the son of Ruby and Herman Speer and has been a lifelong resident.
Donald joined the United States Army and served time as a medic during the Korean War. On May 9, 1959, Donald and Willajean (Ackley) Speer were married. He worked for Rockwell Int. for many years and later worked for Andover Industries until he retired.
Donald enjoyed the outdoors, he loved his John Deere tractors and enjoyed talking to people.
He is survived by his wife Willajean of Dorset, son Douglas (Kim) Speer and their three children Megan, Devyn, and Emmajean of Cazenovia, NY, a daughter Daphane (Jeff) Sutliff, and their sons Micheal and Drew of Lilburn, GA, and daughter Darcy (Jamie) King and their daughter Lyndsay of Lakeland, FL.
He is preceded by his parents, a son Duane Speer, and several siblings.
The family has entrusted the Jefferson Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors, 49 West Jefferson Street, Jefferson, to handle the arrangements. Honoring the family’s wishes there will be no services. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens on Wednesday.

Gary J. Lewis
December 29, 1954 - August 31, 2013
Gary J. Lewis, age 58, of Rt. 193, Dorset, died Saturday morning at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was born on December 29, 1954 in Ashtabula, the son of the late Fraley & Margaret (Taggart) Lewis.
Gary is a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a truck driver for over 30 years. He really loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed playing bingo, sports cars and working on his 1974 Corvette in his free time.
He is survived by his two brothers; Richard Lewis of Washington, PA, Carl (Debbie) Lewis of Andover, nieces, Savannah&Kaylee; a nephew, Tyler, a cousin, Barbara Taggart of Dorset who has been his caretaker and many other cousins.
Burial will take place in Dorset Cemetery at a later date. Contributions may be directed toward the family in care of Barbara Taggart, 3310 Tower Road, Dorset, 44032. The Jefferson Home of Fleming &Billman; Funeral Directors and Crematory, 49 West Jefferson Street, Jefferson, are handling the arrangements.
