ST. MARYS - Gene Amelda Hart, age 82, of St. Marys, Ohio, died late Wednesday morning, Sept. 26, 2007, at the Otterbein Retirement Community, near Grand Lake St. Marys.
Born May 31, 1925 in Green Springs, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Leander D. and Leona M. ((Lawson) Mennell. She was a graduate of the Lakewood High School and the Mather College of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
On June 12, 1948, she married Townsend Elliot Hart, who died June 7, 2004. She and her husband were residents of Conneaut, Ohio, and Crystal River, Fla., prior to their moving to the Otterbein Retirement Community.
A high school English teacher in the Cleveland Public Schools system, she and her husband also owned and operated the P & J Variety Store in Conneaut, Ohio, for many years.
A member of the Wayne St. United Methodist Church in St. Marys, and the Lions Clubs International, she enjoyed collecting and reading books, and flower gardening.
Survivors include three sons, Roy E. (Jane) Hart of Lancaster, Ohio, Russell D. (Debbie) Hart of Divide, Colo., and Paul Hart of Ft. Collins, Colo.; and two grandchildren, Bethany A. (Matthew) Limbert of Mt. Lebanon, Pa. and Stephen A. Hart of Shaker Heights, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brothers, Jay Mennell and Dale Mennell.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Hart are scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at the Meyer Community Chapel of the Otterbein Retirement Community in St.Marys, with the Rev. Carol Sainey officiating. Interment will take place at the Riverside Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.

FOOTVILLE - Kay Cynthia Spafford McMahan, age 73, a resident of Footville, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, at her home in Footville.
Born Dec. 31, 1933 in Footville, Ohio, she was the daughter of Virginia Lewis (Brock) and Erval Ainsworth Spafford. She was a 1952 graduate of Andrews School for Girls and graduated from Kent State University in 1956 with a B.S. in Education. For several years, she was a elementary school teacher at Silver Lake, Ohio. On March 23, 1962, she married John Thresher McMahan Jr. in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. During their marriage, they moved from Geneva-on-the-Lake to Footville to help manage The Spafford Farm.
She was an avid tennis and card player, and enjoyed quilting, gardening, and bowling. She devoted her life to her family and the farm. Kay was a 25-year survivor of breast cancer and counseled other cancer patients. She was strong in her beliefs and was always willing to stand up for them. She was a unique individual and her family and friends will miss her greatly.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, John Thresher McMahan Jr.; five children: John Thresher McMahan III, Jennifer Ivol McMahan, Robert (Robin) Spafford McMahan, Rachel (Timothy) Kay McMahan-Queen, and Sarah (Ronald) Brock Catalucci; and two grandchildren, John “Jake” Thresher McMahan IV and Virginia Rose Catalucci.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert George Spafford.
There will be a private family burial. Final resting place will be at Footville Cemetery.

Margaret F. Reid, 94 of Lake Ave. and formerly of Avondale in Ashtabula died Thursday (January 22nd) at the Silver Sands in Ashtabula. She was born February 2, 1920 in Steele, Missouri the daughter of William S. and Alice D. Copeland.
She had worked for Nelson Machine in Ashtabula and also was a homemaker. She loved sports; also enjoying sewing, cooking and crafts. Most of all she loved to follow her great grandchildren in their sports.
Surviving her is a son, James M. (Brenda) Reid of Ft. Worth, Texas; five grandchildren, Renee (George) Dragon, Cheryl Stitt, Sandra Wagner, Shannon (Keith) Corum and Eric Dallof; and eleven great-grandchildren, Megan Dragon, Bobby Dragon, Caitlyn Stitt, Kelsie Stitt, Parker Stitt, Preston Stitt, Giana Argueta, Jacob Gillespie, Jared Gillespie, Joshua Gillespie and Deacon Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James F. Reid in 1990 and a daughter, Phyllis Ann Wagner and six brothers and sisters.
Funeral service will be Saturday (Jan. 24th) at 2:30 PM at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 West Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with Rev. Father Philip Miller officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville.
Calling hour will be Saturday from 1:30 to the time of service at the funeral home. William R. Luce

William R. Luce, 91 of Nathan Ave. Ashtabula died Friday (Oct. 3rd) at the Madison Health Care in Madison, Ohio. He was born February 4, 1923 in Ashtabula the son of Cleo and Dorothy (Wagner) Luce . He had lived in Florida from 1978 to 2002 returning to Ashtabula.
He was a veteran of the Army during World War II serving in the European Theater of Operations. Following the war he worked at Union Carbide until his retirement in 1970.
He loved tinkering with old machines., Playing cards, travel and when he was in Florida he loved playing Shuffle Board.
Surviving him are his three daughters, Linda Childs of Painesville, Ohio, Kathy McCarty of Ashtabula and Robin (Tom) Terbizan of Ashtabula two grandchildren, Nicholas Childs and Mary Pae, seven great grandchildren; five great –great-grandchildren and his brother, James Luce of Florida. He was preceded n death by his parents; his son, James Luce in 1961; a sister, Jean Shank and his son-in-law, Pat McCarty in 2012.
Private Family Graveside services will be Tuesday (Oct. 21st) at 11:00 AM at Saybrook Township Cemetery with Alisa Nierzejewski, Certified Celebrandt officiating with American Legion Post #103 conducting military rites.

Carolyn Joyce Caldwell, age 71, of N. Bend Rd., Saybrook Twp., went home to be with the Lord on Friday (Oct. 17th) at home with her family by her side. She was born on June 8, 1943 in Ashtabula, the daughter of Everett & Delores (Fox) Sheets.
A lifelong resident of Ashtabula County,age 15 she worked at Erickson's Restaurant on Depot St., then as a waitress at Hotel Ashtabula, a manager at the D & K Store on Main ave.; a cashier at Revco on Main Ave, a cashier at the Convenient Store on West Ave., a waitress at the Holiday Inn on Rt 45. She also did merchandising at the Kmart in Saybrook and was a press operator at Premix in North Kingsville she worked for Jubilee Foods in the Harbor for many years in file maintenance until her retirement in 2002. She was an active member of Lighthouse Baptist Church where she also sang in the choir. She loved to bake, especially Christmas cookies that she would share with others that she loved during the holidays. She enjoyed feeding and watching her hummingbirds.She has a loving heart, a beautiful smile and took time time to say "Hi" to everyone. However, her grandchildren were her world!
She is survived by her husband Ronald W. Caldwell whom she married on February 20, 1970 in Conneaut, Ohio; two children, Kathy M. Cross of Ashtabula and Ronald E. (Margaret) Caldwell of Saybrook Twp.; sister, Glenna Thiel of Ashtabula; brother, Thomas “Tommy” (Judy) Tyson of Ashtabula; four grandchildren, Tamara Goff, Todd Cross, Ronald Caldwell, Charles Caldwell; three great grandchildren, Jacob Sanders, Savannah Cross and Nevaeh Goff; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Ralphn Holsinger; three infant sistes and a grandmother that she held very close to her heart, Lilie Fox.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (Oct. 22nd) at 11:00 A. M. at the Lighthouse Baptist Church, 2929 Carpenter Rd. Ashtabula with Pastor John Jones officiating. Burial will take place in Saybrook Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday (Oct. 21st) from 5:00- 8:00 P. M. at the church and on Wednesday from 10:00 A. M. until the time of service at the church . Ronald Carlson, age 80, of Ashtabula, died Friday, October 10, 2014 at Carington Park. He was born May 9, 1934 in Ashtabula, the son of Carl “Pete” & Frances Carlson. He is survived by a half-brother, Eric (Judy) Carlson of Andrews, NC. He is preceded in death by his parents.
A graveside service will be held Friday, October 17, 2014 at 11:00 A. M. at Edgewood Cemetery with Rev. Christine Bell of the First United Methodist Church of Ashtabula officiating.
