Thomas Edward Bird
MESA, Ariz. - Thomas Edward Bird, 32, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000.
Born July 23, 1968, in Claridon Township, he was the son of Bruce and Sheila Bird.
Mr. Bird attended Maple Elementary School, Chardon; Geauga Christian School, Burton Township; and Howe Military Academy, Howe, Ind.
He attended Chardon Assembly of God Church. In his youth, Mr. Bird was active in the Boy Scouts and Little League.
Survivors include his parents of Novelty; three brothers, Robert of Largo, Fla., Peter of Scottsdale, Ariz., and James of Ravenna; a sister, Amanda Bird-Bosler of Burton; and grandmothers Elizabeth Line of Mesa, Ariz. and Helen Bird of Chagrin Falls.
He was preceded in death by grandfathers Lloyd W. Line Jr. and James Raymond Bird II; and great-grandparents Lloyd and Martha Line and Peter and Elizabeth Orr.
Private family services were held, with the Rev. Larry Winchester of Grace Ministry in Mesa, officiating.

Robert R. Clark
PAINESVILLE - Robert R. Clark, 52, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at LakeEast Hospital, Painesville.
Born Feb. 15, 1948, in Painesville, he was the son of Arthur and Lottie Mae (Twigg) Clark.
Mr. Clark graduated from Perry High School in 1967, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division. He was a member of the Painesville Elks, and attended Perry Christian Church.
Mr. Clark worked as a purchasing manager at Gallo Displays, Cleveland, for 18 years. He also was a co-owner of Promotions Unlimited in Painesville.
He is survived by his mother of Geneva; two daughters, Beth Clark of Melbourne, Fla., and Kimberly Ann Clark of Perry; a son, Christopher Robert of Perry; two grandchildren; three sisters, Jessie Mae Steppe of Piketon, Frances Lee Stutzman of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Barbara Jean "Sue" Boyles of Erie; and a brother, Herbert Arthur of Williamsfield.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1991.
Service is 11a.m. Thursday at the Perry Christian Church, 3566 Center Road, Perry, with the Rev. Will Stackhouse officiating. Interment will be in Perry Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River St., Madison, where the Painesville Elks will have a brief service at 9 p.m.
Dorothy R. Smallwood
MIDDLEFIELD - Dorothy R. Smallwood, 87, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000 at the University Hospitals of Cleveland.
Born March 26, 1913 in Pittsburgh, Pa., Mrs. Smallwood was the daughter of John M. and Susan (Gura) Smallwood. She was a lifelong area resident.
She married John Smallwood on Jan 19, 1935.
A graduate of Huntsburg High School, Mrs. Smallwood worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for Smallwood Packing Co. in Middlefield for 40 years.
She enjoyed gardening and was devoted to her family and to her work.
She is survived by a son, Richard W. Smallwood of Chardon; a daughter, Janet Hauter of Huntsburg; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Smallwood of Middlefield.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988; son Johnny in 1956; two brothers, John and Ralph Ratzenberger; and one granddaughter.
Service is 11 a.m. Thursday at the Russell Golden Rule Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield. The Rev. Richard W. Smallwood of Chardon will officiate. Burial will be in the Middlefield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. a the funeral home.

Thomas G. Roach
CORTLAND - Thomas G. Roach, 65, of North High Street, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at his home.
He was born Oct. 6, 1935, at Eagle Bend, Minn., the son of Jess E. and Martha (Gould) Roach. He moved to the Cortland area in 1959.
An Army veteran, he was a 1953 graduate of Eagle Bend High School, and in 1959 earned a degree in psychology and social science from St. Cloud State College, St. Cloud, Minn.
He worked as a job counselor for the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services, retiring in 1999 after 30 years of service.
He was a member of the Mahoning Valley wood-carving club and was club treasurer. He also was a member of the National Model Railroad Association. In his leisure time he enjoyed target shooting.
He married the former Patrician Crain on Nov. 6, 1959.
Survivors include a son, Michael Roach of Conneaut; a daughter, Barbara Sandrock of Cortland; a brother, Dan Roach of St. Cloud, Minn.; a sister, Cynthia Haack of Charlotte, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, on Nov. 16, 1999.
Memorial service is 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Peter Rossi and Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road, N.E., Warren.
Calling time will be held at the funeral home one hour before Wednesday's service.

Albert F. Validzich
FAIRPORT HARBOR - Albert F. “Al Val” Validzich, 81, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at the Heather Hill Hospital Health and Care Center in Chardon.
He was born May 6, 1919, in Ashtabula and was a longtime Fairport Harbor resident, and formerly of Farrell, Pa. He married Lillian L. Kish on May 9, 1946.
Mr. Validzich worked as a foreman at Diamond Shamrock until it closed in 1976 and then worked as a labor supervisor for several construction companies.
He served aboard the U.S.S. Medusa, participating in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church; was the past president of the Hungarian Culture Club; life member of VFW Post 7754 and the Fairport Slovenian Club, all in Fairport Harbor and the Croatian Lodge in Pennsylvania.
Mr. Validzich was an avid bowler.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Albert Validzich of Fairport Harbor; a daughter, Frances Messina of Wheatland, Pa., and seven nieces and four nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 521 Plum Street, Fairport Harbor with the Rev. Peter Mihalic officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Mulqueeny-Spear Funeral Home, 312 Eagle St., Fairport Harbor.
Graveside Memorial service will be held at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Painesville.
Contributions may be made to the St. Anthony Church Building Fund or to the family.
William D. Reed
BURTON – William D. Reed, 65, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 16, 1935, in Cleveland, the son of Dr. William A. and Lois (Darsie) Reed. He was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Reed was a graduate of Burton High School class of 1955. He served in the Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Reed married Darlene (Bartholomew) June 29, 1957 in Burton.
He was a foreman at the Geauga County Highway Department and retired in 1988.
Mr. Reed enjoyed photography and collecting war memorabilia.
He was a lifelong member of the Burton Congregational Church United Church of Christ. He was a member of the Burton Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years and the American Legion Post 459 of Burton for 15 years.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Major Keith Reed stationed in the Pacific on Johnson Island; two daughters, Kim E. Mullet of Parkman and Karen D. Grimmett of Troy; a sister, Elizabeth A. Cupp of Burton; and grandchildren, Byron Childs, William and Matthew Grimmett and Megan, Melinda and Christopher Matthews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Burton Congregational Church-United Church of Christ with the Rev. Harry Buch officiating. Burial will be in Slitor Cemetery in Burton.

H. Guy Dalton Jr.
PAINESVILLE - H. Guy Dalton Jr., 68, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Lake East Hospital in Painesville.
Born April 2, 1932 in Painesville, he is the son of H. Guy and Verna (Inman) Dalton Sr. He married Nancy Vargo on Jan. 26, 1952.
Mr. Dalton owned and operated Dalton’s Garage and Towing from 1955 until his retirement in 1991.
He attended Harvey High School in Painesville and served as a special deputy for the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
He was a member the B.P.O.E. 549 in Painesville; the Painesville Kiwanis Club; the Ashtabula, Painesville and Madison Amateur Radio Club; former concession chairman of the Party in the Park for Painesville City Improvement Association and past president of the 5 Waiters CB Club.
His hobbies included antique car restoration, bowling and flying.
Mr. Dalton is survived by his wife; two sons, Guy of Painesville and Gary of Perry; two daughters, Cheryl Tremaine of Irwin, Pa., and Debby Dalton of Ashtabula; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Timothy.
Service will be at 8 p.m. Monday at the Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Ave., Painesville. The Rev. Harry Pishcura, pastor of the New Life Assembly of God Church, Geneva, will officiate.
