H. Bernice McKenzie
Died: Wednesday, August 20, 2003

Mrs. H. Bernice McKenzie, former Fairborn resident, died Wednesday, August 20, from respiratory failure in the aftermath of a major stroke on Friday, August 12, in Tallahassee, FL. Mrs. McKenzie was born Hazel Bernice Hays on June 19, 1920, in Midland, IN, the fourth child of Edgar B. Hays and Emma P. Tatum, both of farming families in the Lebanon, KY area.

She graduated from the Indianapolis School of Nursing in 1942. As a registered nurse and member of the American Red Cross, she was called to active duty as a 2nd Lt. in the Army Nurse Corps in 1943 and reported to duty at Eglin Field, FL. She received a military commendation for her actions as a surgical nurse in the aftermath of an accidental explosion on the base that killed 17 and wounded 51 airmen.

While at Eglin, she met and married then Major Melvin A. McKenzie, an aviator recently returned from combat in the Pacific. Together they had military assignments to the Pentagon, Air Command and Staff College, Nagoya, Japan and Patrick AFB, FL before settling in Fairborn.

After her husband’s retirement from Civil Service in 1988, they lived in the Eglin AFB area until July 2003 when they moved to Tallahassee, FL.

Mrs. McKenzie is survived by her husband of 59 years, Lt. Col. Melvin A. McKenzie, USAF, Retired, two sons, Lt. Col. Mark A. McKenzie, USAF, Retired of Omaha, NE and Major Matthew A. McKenzie, USAF of Tampa, FL; three daughters, Frances A. McKenzie of Beacon, NY, Catherine M. Benton and Cynthia M. Alison of Tallahassee, FL; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and her elder sister, Irene Hays Shewmaker of Danville, KY.

An infant daughter, Sandra F. McKenzie, predeceased her in 1944.

Funeral services were held today at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee. She will be buried at Barrancas National Cemetery on Pensacola Naval Air Station on Monday, August 25.

Betty Holzinger
Died: Wednesday, August 20, 2003
Age: 80

Betty Holzinger, age 80, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2003. Betty was a retired hostess from Solomon & Grundy’s Restaurant, Berkley, CA. Preceded in death by her husband - Everett and two sisters.

Survivors include her two daughters - Lisa (& John) Nace, Beavercreek, and Linda (& Willard W. Wicklund II) Holzinger, of AZ.; four grandchildren - Louis, Jeremiah, Tina and Julie; four great-grandchildren - Alyxandria, Briana, Emilie and Nathanial; brother - John Branstetter, of OR.; and many nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Tobias Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Kimberly Katherine Haley
Died: Wednesday, August 20, 2003
Age: 43

Kimberly Katherine Haley, age 43, of Jamestown and formerly of Beavercreek, passed away Wednesday August 20, 2003 after a brave fight against cancer. She was preceded in death by her sister Edythe Ruth Kretzler in 1952.

Kim is survived by her husband Patrick A. Haley, to whom she was married 20 years; her two children James E. and Rachel D. Haley both at home; her parents Frederick and Patricia Kretzler of Beavercreek; two brothers Jody Kretzler III (Debi) of Amanda, OH. and Gary Kretzler (Linda) of Bellbrook and several nieces and nephews. She was a 1978 graduate of Beavercreek High School and a 1982 graduate of the Univ. of Dayton. Kim was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and sister and loving friend who will never be forgotten and will always be loved.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 23, 2003 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Jamestown. Rev. Fr. Bill Thomas Celebrant. Interment Beaver Cemetery. Friends may call today at Tobias Funeral Home, Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Road, from 6-8 p.m. Prayer service 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions, if so desired, may be made to Hospice of Dayton in Kim’s memory.

Eugene Quinton Hall
Died: Wednesday, August 20, 2003
Age: 77

Eugene Quinton Hall, 77, of Xenia passed away at Greenewood Manor on August 20, 2003. He was born on August 31, 1925 in Portsmouth, Ohio the son of Ray Howard and Louise (Flinders) Hall, Sr. Mr. Hall retired from Hooven and Allison after many years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Dottie Thompson and Elizabeth Smith and a brother Ray Hall, Jr.

He is survived by his daughters Bonnie (David) Johnson of Xenia, Connie (Russell) Hensley of Jamestown, Jeanna (Carlos) Potts of New Boston, Ohio and Pamela Carey of Xenia; a sister Lucille Birkhimer of Florida; a special nephew Edward Smith; grandchildren Deanna (Tim) Poole, Joshlyn Potts, Daniel (Stephanie) Carey, Jason (Melody) Carey, Monty Minton, Kevin Maine, Douglas (Jamie Turner) Maine, Jamie (Toshie) Johnson and Andrew (Sabrina Howell) Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Rowena Hall of Portsmouth; several nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, August 25, 2003 at Scioto Memorial Park Cemetery near West Portsmouth, Ohio. Arrangements entrusted to McColaugh Funeral Home, 826 N. Detroit St., Xenia, OH., 45385.

Georgia H. Green
Died: Monday, August 18, 2003
Age: 87

Georgia H. Green, 87, of Xenia, passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at Greene Oaks Health Center. She was born Jan. 1, 1916, in Greenup, Ky., the daughter of Arthur and Rosie (Schetchfield) Luce.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert Green; an infant son, Charles Irvin Green; and a special niece, Marjorie Strickland.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews, great- and great-great nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Gerald Strickland of Xenia.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, from 1-2 p.m. at McColaugh Funeral Home, 826 N. Detroit St., Xenia, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m.

Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Xenia.

Christopher Erinn Gregory
Died: Sunday, August 17, 2003
Age: 30

Christopher Erinn Gregory, age 30, passed away on August 17, 2003, in Columbus.

He was born in Springfield on June 5, 1973, at Community Hospital, while his family lived in Wilberforce.

Christopher was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Order of the Arrow and a Webelos Den Leader, having been a Scout beginning with the Cubs.

He was a graduate of Xenia High School and recipient of the Prudential/Bache American Scholarship Award, a scholarship that paid for full tuition, books, room, board and expenses for his college education.

Christopher received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Media/Communications from Wilberforce University, where his mother, Professor Carol Gregory, has taught for 25 years.

He was an announcer for the WURS radio station, editor for the Brain Storm, the campus student literary magazine and member of the yearbook staff.

Chris was currently a graduate student at Ohio State University, along with his brothers Courtenay and Clifton, and was employed at Call Tech of Columbus.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife Kimberly Irene, son Joshua Phillip, mother Carol, father Louis, brothers Courtenay and Clifton, aunts Elaine, Eleanor, Eugenia, Marilyn and Nancy, uncles Eric, Everett, Elliott, Ralph and David (deceased), grandmother Lucille and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at Porter-Qualls (Colbert) Funeral Home, 574 E. Main St. in Xenia, from 1 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held at Middle Run Baptist Church, 1000 E. Church St., Xenia, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 27. Following the service, internment will be at the Woodland Cemetery, 281 Dayton Ave., in Xenia.

Any flowers, notes or other messages may be left at the funeral home.

Donations should be made to Wilberforce University.

Edna Fuson
Died: Sunday, August 17, 2003
Age: 73

Edna Fuson, 73, of Xenia, wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, died at home Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, surrounded by her family.

The daughter of Vantoy and Bertha Partin, she was born Aug. 10, 1930, in Pineville, Ky.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Otis Fuson; three daughters, Ann (Kerry) Kennedy of Xenia, Linda (Ronnie) Coates of Wilmington and Pam (Mitch) Edwards of New Tazewell, Tenn.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are four sisters, Bessie (Jim) Neal and Evelyn (Clyde) Miracle of Pineville, Ky., and Velma Sharp and Lola Ellison of Winchester, Ky.; one brother, Truman (Joyce) Partin of Middlesboro, Ky.; one uncle, Grant (Gertrude) Hunter of Pineville, Ky.; two sisters-in-law, Opal Newport of Springfield and Jennifer Ladd of Enon; 34 nieces and nephews and numerous extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Vantoy Jr. and Rondal Partin.

Edna was a hairdresser for 37 years, retiring from Lucille’s Beauty Shop and Greenwood Manor in 1999.

She was a member of Fuson Chapel Baptist Church for many years.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 6-9 p.m. at Arnett-Steele Funeral Home in Pineville with services and burial at Fuson Chapel Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m.

The Rev. Denny Gene Hunter will officiate.
