Age: 79
Lois E. Woods, age 79, of Beavercreek, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at her residence.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. (retired) Roy Robert Wood, Jr., in 1989.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Tom Tank, of Harbor Island, S.C.; her son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Dawn Wood, of Springfield, OH.; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Charlie Cooper, of Cleveland, OH.; five granddaughters, Jennifer and husband, Jim Whetstone, Sally Brown, Karen Wood, Heather Wood, and Kayla Wood; two great-grandsons, Zachary and Andrew Whetstone. Lois was a past chairman of R.O.W.W., a prior officer of O.W.C., a volunteer at the WPAFB Thrift Shop for 16 years and an avid bridge player.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at the Tobias Funeral Home, Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd. at Grange Hall Rd. Interment Dayton National Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2003. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the WPAFB Officer’s Club Welfare Fund.
Velma Brown-Rumfelt
Died: Wednesday, October 01, 2003
Age: 78
Velma "Fritz" Brown-Rumfelt, 78, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at her home in Boyne City.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2003 at 3 p.m. at the Walloon Lake Community Church. Pastor Jeff Ellis will officiate. Velma was born on April 5, 1925 in Cedarville, Ohio, the daughter of James and Grace (Reynolds) Vest.
She grew up in Cedarville and graduated from Cedarville High School. She moved to Boyne City in 1954 to purchase the "Homestead Tavern." She worked 25 years before retiring from Allied Signal, now known as Honeywell Aerospace, in Boyne City. Velma married Bob Rumfelt in 1992. He preceded her in death in 1995. She attended the Walloon Lake Community Church. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, especially taking them to breakfast. She also enjoyed visiting with her friends.
Velma is survived by her daughter, Faye Jean Brown-Bearss and her husband, Randy, of Boyne City; three grandchildren, Rebekah, Hannah and Zachariah Bearss of Boyne City; four sisters, Mae Krajicek of Cedarville, Ohio, Eleanor "Deannie" Thornton and her husband, Merrill, of Jamestown, Ohio, Doris "Sam" Wiseman and her husband, David, of Xenia, Ohio and Myrtle Snook of Cedarville, Ohio; three brothers, James Vest and his wife, Radia, Paul "Abie" Vest and his wife, martha, and Donnie Vest and his wife, Joyce, all of Cedarville, Ohio; as well as several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her first husband, Dick Brown of East Jordan; an adopted brother, Teddy Fultz of Boyne City and a good friend, Annie Jenkins of Boyne Falls. Velma was also preceded in death by her parents.
The family was served by the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan.
Duane Thomas
Died: Wednesday, October 01, 2003
Age: 38
Duane "Tommy" Thomas, 38, of Jamestown, passed away Wednesday afternoon at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
He was born October 27, 1964, in Leonardtown, Maryland, the son of Richard and Peggy (Grant) Thomas. Tommy earned his GED while serving in the U.S. Army and was an employee of Ramcrete in Middletown.
He is survived by his wife, Anita (Tackett) Thomas, and children Derick and Lindsey; parents Richard and Peggy Thomas of Jamestown; sister Deborah Thomas Eick of Beavercreek; and mother and father-in-law Harry and Jarnetia Tackett of Jamestown.
Services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Powers Funeral Home in Jamestown, where friends may call Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Burial will be in the Silvercreek Cemetery.
Harold L. Barker
Died: Wednesday, October 01, 2003
Age: 73
Harold L. Barker, 73, of Xenia, passed away Wednesday morning, October 1, 2003, at Hospice of Dayton.
He was born February 16, 1930, in Portsmouth, Ohio, the son of Jerry Wellman Barker and Mary Elizabeth Green Barker.
He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict, and retired from DAP, Inc., Tipp City, after 30 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Lois (Meenach) Barker, whom he married April 7, 1951; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven D. and Susan Barker, Lima, and a daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Gary Anderson, Loganville, Georgia; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bud Barker.
Services will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, October 4, at the Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia, with Rev. Harold Maish officiating.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Graveside services will be held at the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Greenup County, Kentucky, at 3 p.m. Saturday, following the funeral service.
Shirley J. Dunn
Died: Sunday, October 19, 2003
Age: 71
Shirley J. Dunn, 71, of Beavercreek, passed away Sunday, October 19, 2003, at Hospice of Dayton.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Russell, and a sister, Eileen.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Donald, sons and daughter-in-law: David and Tonya Dunn of Englewood, and Roger Dunn of Utah; daughter and son-in-law: Patti and Michael Quilling of Chicago; and seven grandchildren: Maleaia, Robbie, James, Melissa, Alexa, Lucas, and Matthew.
Mrs. Dunn retired from Bank One after 20 years of service. She was a member of St. Andrew Methodist Church, Dayton Eights and Square A-Go-Go Square Dance Clubs; and was a volunteer at the American Red Cross. Together with her husband, she worked as a hairdresser at Don’s Hairdressers.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Tobias Funeral Home, Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Road.
Interment Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
If desired, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association in her memory.
The family would like to thank the staff and her friends at the Miami Valley Dialysis Unit.
George Eugene Rue
Died: Saturday, October 18, 2003
Age: 71
George Eugene Rue, 71, of Enon, formerly of Xenia, passed away Saturday, October 18, 2003, in the Wright Nursing Center in Fairborn.
After a long and courageous battle he went home to be with the Lord. He was born January 18, 1932, in Clarksville, Ohio, to the late William and Alma (Thompson) Rue.
George graduated from Xenia Central High School in 1951 where he was an outstanding Buccaneer athlete.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the Enon United methodist Church, where he served as a trustee prior to his illness. In 1990, after nearly 34 years of service, he retired from the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
George was devoted and loving father, grandfather and husband and his presence will be missed by those who survive him and those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife and friend, Melva (Ruse) Rue of nearly 52 years, two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Mike Marshall of Centerville, and Sandy and Phil Popovich of Beavercreek; one son and daughter-inlaw, Matt and Sheila Rue of Springfield; five precious grandchildren, Chad and Scott Marshall, Nicole and Tonya Rue and Andrue Popovich; two sisters, Dorothy Times of Pickerington, Juanita Stubbs of Germantown; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Cliff and Dorothy Rue of St. Paris, Frank and Darlene Rue and David and Ruthann Rue, all of Xenia. His mother and father, three sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2003, in Adkins Funeral Home, Enon. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, in Enon United Methodist Church, with Pastor Chris Farmer officiating. Burial will follow the service in Enon United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Enon United Methodist Church, attn: George Rue fund.
The family would like to express their gratitude to everyone for their love and support during George’s lengthy illness.
Thelma Virginia Spurr
Died: Saturday, October 18, 2003
Age: 76
Thelma Virginia Spurr, 76, of Xenia, passed away Saturday, October 18, 2003, at Hospice of Dayton.
She was born February 9, 1927, in Meigs County, Ohio, the daughter of William and Daisy (Birch) Pratt.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ on Ledbetter Road for many years.
Mrs. Spurr was married to William Spurr on February 20, 1945, and he survives. She is also survived by her daughter Cheryl (John) Bowen of Xenia, a son Barry (Marie) Spurr of Tennessee; sisters Audry Crothers of Newark, Wilma Dangelo of Canal Fulton, Ohio; and a brother William Pratt of North Lawrence, Ohio; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; also several nieces, nephews, extended family members and many friends including Roma Williams and a special thank you to Jincy Willoughby for the tender care you gave my wife and our mother.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at the First Church of Christ, 441 Ledbetter Road, Xenia with R. James "Pete" Creamer officiating.
Mrs. Spurr’s family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at church. Arrangements entrusted to McColaugh Funeral Home, 826 N. Detroit St., Xenia, Ohio 45385.
