George Eugene Rue
Died: Saturday, October 18, 2003
Age: 71
George Eugene Rue, 71, of Enon, formerly of Xenia, passed away Saturday, October 18, 2003, in the Wright Nursing Center in Fairborn.
After a long and courageous battle he went home to be with the Lord. He was born January 18, 1932, in Clarksville, Ohio, to the late William and Alma (Thompson) Rue.
George graduated from Xenia Central High School in 1951 where he was an outstanding Buccaneer athlete.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the Enon United methodist Church, where he served as a trustee prior to his illness. In 1990, after nearly 34 years of service, he retired from the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
George was devoted and loving father, grandfather and husband and his presence will be missed by those who survive him and those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife and friend, Melva (Ruse) Rue of nearly 52 years, two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Mike Marshall, Matt and Sheila Rue of Springfield; five precious grandchildren, Chad and Scott Marshall, Nicole and Tonya Rue and Andrue Popovich; two sisters, Dorothy Times of Pickerington, Juanita Stubbs of Germantown; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Cliff and Dorothy Rue of St. Paris, Frank and Darlene Rue and David and Ruthann Rue, all of Xenia. His mother and father, three sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2003, in Adkins Funeral Home, Enon. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 22 in Enon United Methodist Church, with Pastor Chris Farmer officiating. Burial will follow the service in Enon United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Enon United Methodist Church, attn: George Rue fund.

Janetta Smith
Died: Saturday, October 18, 2003
Age: 62
Janetta Smith, 62, of Jamestown, passed away Saturday evening at Hospice of Dayton. She was born Jan. 16, 1941, in Morgan County, Ky., the daughter of Claude and Edna (Farley) Mays.
She was a member of the Jamestown Church of Christ and is survived by a daughter, Debra and husband Ron Rohlfing, son Keith and wife Roxie Smith, and three grandchildren, Sean Rohlfing and Cassandra and Nicholas Smith, all of Jamestown, a brother Edgar and wife Patricia Mays of Texas, and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Her husband, Malcolm Keith Smith, parents and a sister, Della Marie Mays, preceded her in death.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Jamestown Church of Christ, where friends may call Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Silvercreek Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton. Arrangements are with the Powers Funeral Home in Jamestown.
Jimmy Burke
Died: Saturday, October 18, 2003
Age: 69
Jimmy Burke, 69, of New Jasper, went to be with the Lord on Saturday evening at home with his loving family at his side.
He was born in Charleston, W.Va., Jan. 3, 1934, the son of William and Freda Hall Burke.
Jimmy was a retired Glazer from Local 923 of Dayton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Patsy (Shelton) Burke; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Mark Bundy Sr. of New Lebanon and Margaret and John Musser of Waynesville; two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Sylvia Burke of Radcliff, Ky., and Timothy and Lynne Burke of Center Line, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother Donny Burke of Dayton; three sisters, Maxine Jeffries of Dayton and Brenda Faber and Yolanda Cantebery of Charleston, W.Va.; and special friends George Hunter and Pete Kincaid.
His parents, three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Christian Union in Jamestown. Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Powers Funeral Home in Jamestown. Burial will be in the Silvercreek Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Clinton County.
Hayden Anderson Hastings
Died: Friday, October 17, 2003
Age: 83
Funeral services for Mr. Hayden Anderson Hastings, 83, of 2775 Pulaski Pike, Frankewing, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Higgins Funeral Home with Mr. Hastings’ sons officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Woodland Cemetery in Xenia beside his first wife, Gwendolyn Thomason Hastings.
Mr. Hastings died Thursday at the Lincoln Care Center.
He was born Dec. 22, 1919, a native of Lincoln County, son of the late Grady and Cora Lane Hastings. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Cyruston Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Inez Wilson Hastings of Frankewing, six sons, Phillip Wayne Hastings of Fayetteville, Roger Neal Hastings of Hammond, Mo., Mark Anderson Hastings of New Carlisle, Bruce Edwin Hastings of Dayton, and twin sons, Lloyd Hastings of Cincinnati and Boyd Hastings of Brookville, one sister, Rachel Jewell of Mt. Dora, Fla., 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, and six loving daughters-in-law.
Visitation with the family will be Sunday from noon until time of services at 2 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home.

Charles R Rowland
Died: Friday, October 17, 2003
Age: 62
Charles "Chuck" R. Rowland, 62, of Xenia, went to his eternal rest with Jesus on Friday, Oct. 17, 2003.
He was born in Johnson County, Ky., March 2, 1941, the son of Milton T. and Sarah F. (Sturgill) Rowland.
He served in the U.S. Navy as an air traffic controller on the USS Independence and participated in the Bay of Pigs conflict. After his discharge from the Navy, he worked for 28 years at Navistar International as a welder in department 18, retiring in 1994. He was an avid sports and OSU fan who enjoyed bowling, coaching and playing softball. He hosted many softball tournaments in the Springfield and Xenia area.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Martha Forrester Loveland, mother-in-law Kathryn Forrester, who resided at his home, two stepsons, Roger W. Rude III of Grapevine, Texas, and Derrick Rude of Kettering, a stepgranddaughter, Amelia Rude, and a sister, Christine Imogene Winget of Springfield.
Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Christian Union in Jamestown, where friends may call from noon until time of service.

Charlotte M. Hughes
Died: Saturday, October 11, 2003
Age: 86
Charlotte M. Hughes (Boots) of Cedarville, age 86, who was born March 6, 1917, Xenia passed away October 11, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis W. Hughes, whom she married June 4, 1940, her parents George H. and Cora (Anderson) Boots, and her brother, Leonard Boots.
She is survived by a brother, Franklin H. Boots and a sister Jeannette (Carl) Alsip and two sons: David (Judy) Hughes and Douglas (Geri) Hughes. Grandchildren, Melinda (Hughes) Nyhan, Grace Nyhan, (Denis), Ryan Hughes, Jason (Susan) Hughes, step-grandchildren, Kristine Koontz (Jay) and Greg Geddes, two great-grandchildren, Grace Nyhan and Ethan David Hughes, and three great-stepchildren, Nickolas, Chandler and Kristopher Koontz. Sister-in-law Wanda (Paul) Stonburner, brother-in-law Merlin Eidemiller, and many dear friends and relatives. Charlotte was a member of the Cedarville United Methodist Church and was a retired beautician, an avid bridge player, loved wildlife and gardening.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2003, at the Cedarville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mark Putman officiating. Arrangements by Ingling Williams Funeral Home, Cedarville. Burial will follow in Cedarville North Cemetery.

Mary Frances Walker Blackburn
Died: Thursday, July 24, 2003
Age: 97
Mary Frances Walker Blackburn, 97, of Waynesville, Ohio (formerly of Wilmington and Xenia, Ohio), passed away at 5:32 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Quaker Heights Nursing Home, Waynesville. She was born Feb. 24, 1906, in Wilmington, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph M. Walker and Eugenia Cast Walker, who preceded her in death.
Her former husband, Leonard Thomas "Tom" Blackburn, who she married in August 1931, also preceded her in death.
Mary was a member of the Episcopal Church in Xenia. She was active in numerous animal welfare leagues throughout her life.
Mary was a 1924 graduate of Wilmington High School and attended Wittenburg University, Ohio State University, and the Columbus Art Academy.
She is survived by son, Theodore Walker Blackburn, Xenia; a grandchild, Timothy Walker Blackburn, Wilmington; and former daughter-in-law and caregiver, Joan Blackburn, Kettering, Ohio.
Services will be held at Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, Ohio at 1 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2003. Burial will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery.
