Richard L. Atkinson
Died: Monday, August 11, 2003
Age: 63

Richard L. "Dick" Atkinson, 63, Xenia, beloved husband, father, son and friend and loved by so many, passed away Monday morning, Aug. 11, 2003, at Kettering Medical Center. He was born July 30, 1940, in Xenia, the son of Thomas and Corinne Ewbank Atkinson.

He was a member of the Fairborn Masonic Lodge 711, F&AM, advisor to ITT Technical Institute, past president of NTSA, National Technical Services Association, and former member of the American Quarter Horse Association.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle (Marshall) Atkinson, whom he married June 20, 1981; daughter and son-in-law, Mandy (Atkinson) and Tom Hall, Centerville; son, Randy Atkinson, Jamestown; two grandchildren, Jacob McKenny and Cheyenne Atkinson; mother, Corinne Atkinson, Xenia; father and stepmother, Thomas and Zerphia Atkinson, Indiana; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jim and Delores Marshall; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rex and Vickie Marshall and Kurt and Patty Marshall; three half-sisters, Donna English, Plainfield, Ind., Bonnie Marshall, Hermitage, Tenn., and Lila Love, Levonia, Mich.; three half-brothers, Thomas Atkinson, Danny Atkinson and Larry Atkinson, all of Indiana; mother of his children, Judy Beck Atkinson,. Xenia, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at the Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia, with Rex Marshall officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by Masonic Lodge services at 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Port William, Ohio.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Barbara B. Brand
Died: Wednesday, August 06, 2003
Age: 60

Barbara B. Brand, 60, formerly of Kettering and Xenia, Ohio, died Saturday, August 6, 2003, in Niantic, Connecticut, following a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Brand was born on July 26, 1943, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Robert and Ruby Rhodes Brewer.

She married Robert N. Brand on July 3, 1968, in Kettering. They relocated to Niantic in 1984.

She was employed as a veterinary technician at the Goodfriend Veterinary Hospital in East Lyme, Connecticut.

Mrs. Brand is survived by her loving husband; her two sons, Christopher N. Brand and Nathan F. Brand, both of Niantic; a brother, Louis S. Brewer of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two sisters, Rita Tipton of Xenia and Joan Bale of Kettering.

A funeral will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2003, in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Ave., Niantic, CT 06357.

Calling hours will be held before the service on Friday from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private.

Donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of Southeastern CT, P.O. Box 902, Uncasville, CT 06382.

Neva Elizabeth Whitmore
Died: Thursday, July 03, 2003
Age: 88

Neva Elizabeth Whitmore, 88, a resident of Mt. Vernon, died on Thursday, July 3, at the home of her niece, Jane Scott, in Jamestown.

She was born Nov. 29, 1914, in Harrison Township, Knox County.

She graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa scholar from Denison University and received a master’s degree in literature from Ohio State University.

She taught English and French at Bowersville and Wapakoneta high schools.

She retired from Ohio Bell and was a member of the Pioneer Club.

She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Clara (Petry) Whitmore.

Surviving are a sister, Helen Harris of Xenia; nieces, Vicki Bailey of New Jersey, Jane Scott of Jamestown and Jean Miller of Florida; nephew, Robert Harris of Maine; great-nieces Claudia Murray and Carrie Bailey; great-nephews Michael and Marc Miller; and great-great-nieces Michelle and Erin Miller.

Services were held on July 7 at the Dilley Funeral Home North, Mt. Vernon, and burial was at the Grove Church of Christ Cemetery, Gambier.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Dayton or Wilmington.

Joe Ivory Fite
Died: Monday, September 29, 2003
Age: 58

Joe Ivory Fite, age 58, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 29, 2003. He was born on January 10, 1945, in Beckville, Texas, to Monroe and Ollie (Sheppard) Fite.

Mr. Fite retired from General Motors after 30 years of service. He was a trustee of Bethel Apostolic Church in Springfield and was an honorably discharged Air Force Vietnam Veteran that toured Cambodia. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Cynthia (Stillgess) Fite of Xenia, Ohio; one son, Luther McCormick; four daughters, Lisa (Kevin) Jackson of Springfield, Lori (Curtis) Easley of Auburn Hills, Mich., Lynnene (Jeffrey) Smith of Huntsville, Ala., and Joie (Gary) Collins of Ohio; one step-daughter, Janea (Edwin) Wirts, all of Xenia; one sister, Monnie Faye Ross of Las Vegas; 18 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Frances Majors, and one brother, Steven Horton.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2003, at 10 a.m. until time of service at 12 p.m. with family present at 11 a.m. at the First United Christian Church, 626 N. Columbus Ave., Xenia, with Elder Garfield Parker of Bethel Apostolic Church in Springfield officiating.

Lt. Col. Stephe M. Nehez
Died: Monday, September 29, 2003
Age: 84

Lt. Col. Stephen M. Nehez, age 84, passed away Monday, September 29, 2003, at Greene Memorial Hospital. He was born in East St. Louis, Missouri, on August 19, 1919, the son of the late Stephen and Anna Nehez.

Following his birth, his family moved to McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Waynesburg College and taught classes at McKeesport High School in Pennsylvania up until 1941, when he was drafted into service. In 1943, he was sent to the Montana Bases at Great Falls, where the 390th Bombardment Group was activated. Following the training, he was transferred to Suffolk, England, until the end of the war in 1945. Following the war, he earned an engineering degree at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was offered a job at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron.

He was a member of St. Stephen’s Hungarian Roman Catholic Church in McKeesport, where he met his wife, Helen, whom he married on June 10, 1950. In 1951, he was recalled into service as a Korean Retread and stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where he also joined the Reserves. He continued to work at the base until his retirement in 1979. He enjoyed teaching at Clark State in Springfield, Ohio. He had received numerous achievement awards during his tenure at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; his daughter, Loretta of Ukiah, California; his son Paul and his fiancée, Marty Reed of Yellow Springs; his brother, Alex of Michigan; and numerous nieces, nephews and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen M. Nehez Jr.; his parents; three brothers, Joseph and sister-in-law, Margaret; James and sister-in-law, Valborg; Nicholas and sister-in-law, Eva; cousins, James, Anna, Casper and Mary.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2003 in the Jackson Lytle & Ingling Williams Funeral Home, Yellow Springs, A Dignity Memorial Provider. At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, people are invited to share with the family their memories and stories of Steve. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Paul’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Friday, October 3, 2003, with Father Joseph Raudabaugh officiating. Interment will follow in St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery.

Immediately following will be a reception at St. Paul’s Church. In memory of Steve, contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 308 Phillips Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387.

Robert W. Mills Sr.
Died: Friday, September 26, 2003
Age: 80

Robert W. Mills Sr., 80, of Beavercreek, passed away after an extended illness on Friday, September 26, 2003.

A former resident of Erie, PA, and Pinehurst, NC, he retired in 1984 from Lord Corporation in Erie after 42 years of faithful service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W. Foster and Margaret B. Mills and his twin brother, Byron (Buzz) Mills.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Ruth (Burdick) Mills; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Garth Hess of Erie, PA; a son and daughter-in-law Bob and Marcy Mills of Beavercreek.

He was blessed to have four wonderful grandchildren, Kevin and Tim Hess, Janel Barnett and her husband Jerad and Melissa Spencer and her husband Gavin.

A special joy to him was great-granddaughter Allison Barnett. The family would like to give special thanks to the caring staff at the Trinity Community in Beavercreek for the special attention they provided.

At the request of the family, funeral arrangements will be private.

If desired, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association. The family is being served by Burcham Funeral Home, 119 E. Main St., Fairborn.

Debra A. Day
Died: Thursday, September 25, 2003
Age: 42

Debra A. Day, 42, of Washington Twp., passed away Thursday, September 25, 2003.

She was a 1979 graduate of Park Hills High School in Fairborn; a graduate of Wright State University and an employee of Lexis Nexis with more than 10 years of service.

She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Day of Fairborn; three sisters, Terri FitzHarris and husband Walt of Dayton; Beverly Day of Dayton and Mindy Fasolo and husband Paul of Alameda, CA and one niece, Ali FitzHarris.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Tobias Funeral Home, Far Hills Chapel, 5471 Far Hills Ave. at Rahn Road.

Pastors Charles McMahan and Mike Smith will officiate. Burial will be in David’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. If desired, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
