Floyd "Joe" Slates Jr.
Floyd "Joe" Slates Jr., 66, Kent, died Aug. 13, 2003 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
He was born June 16, 1937 in Cadiz, a son of the late Floyd F. and Daisy (Maffet) Slates Sr.
He previously had lived in Jewett. He was a member of the Ravenna Moose Lodge #1234. He was retired as an operating engineer and had worked with McCourt Construction in Akron.
He was preceded in death by parents and a son, Richard W. Slates.
Surviving are sons Michael D. Slates of Ravenna and Joseph A. Slates Sr. of Kent; brother Ronald Slates of Navarre; sister Elizabeth Dowdle of Jewett and three grandsons.
Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna Chapel. Visitation will also be held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday and from 1 p.m. until service time on Monday at the Blackburn Funeral Home, East Main Street, Jewett with the Rev. Terry Baker officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery near Jewett.
Robert Roy DeWire
Robert Roy DeWire, 79, Dover, died Aug. 13, 2003 in the VA Hospital, Brecksville, Ohio.
He was born Aug. 28, 1923 in Tamaqua, Pa., a son of the late Roy Oscar DeWire and Jessie Green Wall DeWire.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II as part of a Tank Destroyer Specialist Unit, serving from January 1943 until November 1945. He owned and operated Bo DeWire & Associates of Dover for 30 years. He was a member of the Dover senior citizens, Dover American Legion, Dover #40 & 8, Dover Veterans of Foreign War, Leesville Masonic Lodge and was a collector of clocks.
He was preceded in death by parents; first wife and mother of his children, Jean P. Trotman DeWire; granddaughter, Mindy Alpeter and brother, Franklin DeWire.
Surviving are his wife of five years, Thelma Jean Trushell DeWire; a son, Robert H. A. DeWire of Dover; three daughters, Mrs. Dave (Cheryl) Ayers of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. John (Debra) Alpeter of New Philadelphia and Mrs. Alvin (Robin) Haas of Mentor; three stepdaughters, Linette McGowan of East Sparta, Mrs. Dave (Cathy) Kurucz of Canton and Mrs. John (Mary Ann) Moody of Zanesville; a stepson, Lin (Susan) Slutz/Oster of Dayton; sister, Ann Fern of Tamaqua; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call Friday, Aug. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Koch Funeral Home, 216 S. High St., Freeport. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in the funeral home with the Rev. James Taggart officiating. Military services and burial will follow in Ft. Laurens Cemetery, Bolivar.
Willard C. "Willie" Roe
Willard C. "Willie" Roe, 64, Salesville, died Aug. 13, 2003 at his residence.
He was born Sept. 11, 1938 in Batesville, Ohio, a son of the late Raymond and Cleo Morgan Roe.
He was a milk hauler for Christman Trucking and a member of the Cambridge senior citizens. He enjoyed setting up the lights and sound for his son's band "Unforgiven." he also enjoyed his dog, Dikster, visiting with friends and family and going to Wheeling Downs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Carroll, Eugene, Robert, Warren Curtis and Cecil Roe; and sister, Twila Gertrude Roe.
Surviving are his wife, Betti Dingus Roe and a son, Adam (Carmen) Roe of Kings Mine, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 15, 2003 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, 319 North Chestnut St., Barnesville, where service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Friends Cemetery, Quaker City.
Howard Isaac (Ike) Howell Jr.
Howard Isaac (Ike) Howell Jr., 79, St. Clairsville, died Aug. 12, 2003 at Crestview Nursing Home, St. Clairsville.
He was born Jan. 1, 1924 in Belmont County, a son of the late Howard Sr. and Bertha Fritter Howell.
He was a dairy farmer and a former employee of Oak View Nursing Home. He was an Army paratrooper during World War II, a member of the Flushing American Legion, the Ruritan Club, Farm Bureau and 4-H Club.
He was preceded in death by parents; a daughter, Bertha (Bert) Howell; brother, Walten and a son-in-law, David Horvath.
Surviving are his wife, Marguerite Leah Fitzgerald Howell; two daughters, Carol Jean Howell of Akron and Rhonda Bugala of St. Clairsville; six sisters, Virginia Seidel, Lila Martin, Martha Reed, Betty Brown, Eloise Hagans and Sue Cooney; four grandchildren, Lorin and Deana Odorizzi, Baron and Beau Bugala and a great-granddaughter, Mallory Bugala.
Friends will be received 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Beck-Altmeyer Funeral Home, St. Clairsville, where service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Wayne Ickes officiating.
Burial with military rite will follow at Rock Hill Cemetery, Flushing.
Robert H. Lathem
Robert H. Lathem, 57, formerly of Cadiz, died Jan. 10, 2004 in Sugarcreek.
He was born Nov. 11, 1946 in Steubenville, a son of the late Hoyt Milton and Margaret Thelma Burdick Lathem.
He was a resident manager of Clearview Town Homes in Cadiz for the last 10 years.
He was preceded in death by parents; two brothers, Milton (Bob) and Glenn Lathem, both of Iowa.
Surviving are a son, James Lathem of Sugarcreek; daughter, Paula Grabits and husband Joseph Jr. of Adena; two brothers, Donald Lathem of North Carolina and Walt Lathem of Texas; three sisters, Margaret Bice and husband Mike of New Philadelphia, Gwenn Reynard and husband Terry of Smithfield and Thelma Parrish of Smithfield; two grandsons, Joseph Grabits III and Tyler Lathem.
Friends may call at the Blackburn Funeral Home, Hopedale, Feb. 12, 2004 from 6-9 p.m. with service there on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Randy Sells officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.
Pribble Marie Stewart
Pribble Marie Stewart, 88, Cleveland, died Feb. 10, 2004 at Parma Hospital, Parma, Ohio. She was a former Jewett resident for several years.
She was born in Clay County, W.Va., and the daughter of the late Silas and Lillian Ramsey Brown.
She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Lemon Daniels and Tolbert Stewart; two infants and a brother, Holly Brown.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Grose and husband Chester of Cleveland, and Patricia Stewart of West Virginia; two grandchildren, Steve Grose of North Ridgeville and Pat Bragg of Cleveland.
Friends may call at the Blackburn Funeral Home, Jewett, on Feb. 12, 2004 from noon until service time at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William Westling officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery near Jewett.
Michael Richard "Mikey" Eickleberry
Michael Richard ''Mikey'' Eickleberry, 23, of Hopedale, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at Harrison Community Hospital, the result of a work-related accident. He was born Oct. 19, 1980 in Steubenville, Ohio, a son of Michael and Cathy Hawkins Eickleberry, with whom he resided.
Mikey graduated from the Harrison Career Center in 1999. He was active in FFA and 4-H. He was a varsity wrestler and football player for the Cadiz Cardinals. He was an avid hunter and rode and showed horses. As a child, he played T-ball and baseball, and was a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout. He was a former member of ABATE, Region 1. He was a mechanic and was a member of the Hopedale United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, S. Raymond and Mary Elizabeth Eickleberry; maternal grandfather, Richard S. Hawkins; great-grandparents, Wayne S. Snyder, James F. Myers, Rose Hawkins and John O. Hawkins; and two uncles, Ross Eickleberry and Clifford David Eickleberry.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Carrie Ann Eickleberry of Columbus; maternal grandmother, Catherine Hawkins Farnsworth of Hopedale; two great-grandmothers, Lillie Myers of Wintersville and Florence Snyder of Texas; his girlfriend, Brandy Nipper of Scio; aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. David (Rebecca) Chancey, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth (Patricia) Cline, Mr. and Mrs. Larry (Sarah) Orr, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Dean (Carolyn) Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Barbara) Ott, Mr. Howard Eickleberry (Elizabeth), Mr. and Mrs. David (Bernice) Eickleberry, Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey (Judy) Eickleberry, Mr. and Mrs. Gary (Linda) Wheeler, Mr. and Mrs. Sam (Barb) Eickleberry, Mr. Herman Eickleberry, Mr. Raymond Dean Eickleberry, and Mrs. Thelma (Clifford D.)
