James W. Barger
James W. Barger, 87, of Bellville, Ohio, formerly of Cadiz, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, at the Country Meadows Care Center in Belleville. He was born May 20, 1919 in Stock Twp., Harrison County, Ohio, a son of the late Clarence A. and Lydia Ann Phillips Bargar.After attending Laceyville School, he graduated from Scio High School in 1937. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church and was a lifelong farmer. He also worked for many years for Stock Twp., C. & H. Modern Builders, and the Cadiz Seed Co. He was a member and past secretary of the Deersville Community Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Ohio Flywheel Club, and enjoyed transporting his Amish friends.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Marianna McKlveen, Ruth Gram, Doris Birney and a twin sister, Martha (Betty) Cope; a niece, Janet L. Birney; and nephews, Tom and Carl Albert Birney.Surviving are nephews James Richard (Marilyn) Cope, John (Audrey) Birney, Bill (Barb) Birney, and Clarence (Mary Lou) Gram; nieces: Betty Jo (Don) Shaw, Donna McKlveen, Doris (Jack) Burton, and Joyce Richards; several great-nephews and great-nieces; and several great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces.Friends may call Saturday from 4-8 p.m. at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz, where funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 5, 2 p.m. with Matilda Heavilin officiating. Josephine Katherine Gribben
Josephine Katherine Gribben, 80 of rural Hopedale, died Oct. 27, 2006. She was born in Cleveland on July 9, 1926, the daughter of late John and Mary Pegan Wisnowski. She was also preceded in death by two infant sons, one infant daughter, three brothers and two sisters.Josephine retired from St. John's Hospital, as an LPN nurse in Steubenville after more than 18 years of service. She is a member of the Church of Christ in Cadiz.She is survived by her husband, James Walter Gribben of Hopedale, who she married April 8, 1944; one son, David Gribben and wife Patty Midcap of Hopedale; one daughter, Jean (Corless) Wetzel of Weirton, WVA; four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.At the request of Josephine, there will be no funeral services.Blackburn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Robert L. Hopkins Sr.
Robert L. Hopkins Sr., age 68, of Ellenton Fla., formerly of New Athens, died Oct. 28, 2006.Born August 20th, 1938 in Harrison Co, Bob worked as a coal miner for several years and retired from the State of Ohio in 1999.He was preceded in death by his parents, David (Bud) and Irene (Laisure) Hopkins and an infant grandson.Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lois (Milhorn) Hopkins, daughters Karen (Gio) Ratliff, Janet (Tom) Thompson, Diane (Bob) Craker all of Centerburg, daughter Christine (Tom) Gannon of Alto, Ga., and son Robert (Theresa) Hopkins Jr. of Westerville; three sisters, Judy (Frank) Dickerson, Kay (Bob) Lewis, and Sue (Brad) Bradley, all of New Athens; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.A small family gathering in Bob's honor will be held at a later date.
Betty Jarvis
Betty (Timmy) Jarvis, 75, Bloomingdale died Oct. 26, 2006, at Trinity East Hospital, Steubenville. She was born in Cameron, W. Va, and graduated from Scio High School.She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Russell F. Jarvis; two daughters, Lori Crowder of Strausburg and Cassie White and husband Tom of Hilliard; one son, Mark Jarvis and wife JoEllen of North Reading, Mass; three grandsons, three granddaughters and one great grandson.Timmy was a life long learner and enjoyed working with children as a H.O.S.T.S. Program Reading Mentor at Wayne Elementary School for the past seven years, was a Sunday School teacher, Brownie Leader and day care aide. She was active in the Presbyterian Church in Bloomingdale and other community activities.At Timmy's request, there will be no visitation or funeral services.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Betty Jarvis Memorial Fund, in care of Parkvale Bank, 805 Main St. Wintersville, Ohio 43953. Donations will be given to educational programs for children at Wayne Elementary School, Bloomingdale. Blackburn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Rosealtha E. Sasak
Rosealtha E. Sasak, 70, Adena, died Nov. 7, 2006 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.She was born Jan. 25, 1936 in Adena, a daughter of the late Andrew and Nettie Williams Carpenter. She was Christian by faith.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Andrew, William, Daniel and Robert Carpenter; two sisters, Mary Jane Carpenter, Betty Knicely.Surviving are her husband, Herman Sasak; a son, Herman (Linda) Sasak Jr. of Cadiz ; two daughters, Mary Sasak of Adena and Roseanne Sasak of Harrisville; three brothers, John (Josephine) Carpenter of Nebraska, Donald Carpenter of Smithfield, Alvin Carpenter of Colorado; two sisters, Martha (Tim) Morgan of New Alexandria, Shirley Robinson of South Carolina; five grandchildren, Christopher Brian Sasak, Lori Donahue, Heather Culbertson and Steven and Ashley Kidd; eight great-grandchildren.Friends will be received on Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Borkoski Funeral Home, Adena. Service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Barry Hall officiating.
Dorothy P. Newburn
Dorothy P. Newburn, 93, Unionport, died Dec. 7, 2006 in Gables Care Center of Hopedale.She was born Sept. 6, 1913 in Unionport, a daughter of the late Marion and Neola McBain Peterson.She was a member of the Unionport Christian Church, Unionport Grange, Ladies Auxiliary VFW #45, Wayne Township Community Center and an honorary member of the Unionport fire department.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William; an infant son; a granddaughter; three brothers; four sisters.Surviving are four sons, Blaine, Harold and Fred Newburn all of Unionport, Robert Newburn of North Carolina; two daughters, Bonnie (Harry) Ault, Barbara (Gordon) Merryman both of Unionport; four brothers, William Peterson, Marion Peterson, Ronald Peterson all of Carrollton and Robert Peterson of Canton; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren.Service will be held Dec. 10, 2006 at 1 p.m. in the Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home at Amsterdam with the Rev. Hubert Granger officiating. Burial will follow in the Unionport Cemetery.Visitation will be Saturday from 4-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Irene Butler Torchik Gibas, died Dec. 5, 2006 at Sun Coast Hospital, Largo, Fla.She was born November 29, 1921 at Jewett, Ohio.Irene is being cremated.
