William (Bill) Hennis Sr.
William (Bill) Hennis Sr., 84, Bloomingdale, died April 9, 2008 in his home. He was born in Hopedale, June 10, 1923, a son of the late Thomas and Mae Pinch Hennis.He attended the Hopedale High School and Unionport Grade Schoool. He was in the U.S. Army and received the following decorations for his service to our country, American Theater Ribbon, Eame Theater Ribbon with one bronze star, Asiatic Theater Ribbon, Victory medal World War II.Before retirement in 1986, he worked as a truck and later was employed as a bus driver and custodian for several years in the Indian Creek School District. He was a member of the Hopedale American Legion and the Unionport United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harry, Donnie and Charles Hennis and a sister, Arvella Shaffer. He is survived by his wife Donna Maffit Hennis; three daughters, Kathy (Fred) Newburn, Brenda (Jim) Carducci, both of Bloomingdale, Cindy (Bob) Davis of Andover, Ohio; four sons, William (Billy) Hennis Jr, Keith (Biz) Hennis, Lindley (Marsha) Hennis all of Bloomingdale and Harry (Susan) Hennis of Chesapeake, Va.; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Colleen Devore of Bloomingdale.Friends may call at the Blackburn Funeral Home 324 High St., Hopedale on Friday, April 11 from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. and on Saturday, April 12, 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Unionport Cemetery.
William Miller
CADIZ - William Miller, 76, of Cadiz, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at the Valley Hospice Palliative Care Unit in Steubenville. He was born September 26, 1931 in Toledo, Ohio, a son of the late Floyd and Dorothy (Sue) Debrosse Miller. He was a retired factory worker at Gulf Chemical Company in Jewett, Ohio. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son James D. Miller; two sisters, Mary Eshelman and Betty Phillips; and a brother Floyd Miller. Surviving are his wife, Shirley McAfee Miller; a son, James L. Miller (Patty Sferella); a daughter, Kimberly L. Miller (Bob); a daughter-in-law, Mary Miller; a sister, Dorthy Adler of Arizona; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Harrison County Cemetery, Cadiz. Arrangements are by Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz.
Howard H. Heaston
DOVER - Howard H. Heaston, 68, a lifelong resident of the Conotton area died April 5, 2008 in Union Hospital, Dover.Born June 18, 1939 in Conotton, he was a son of the late Oliver and Delilah Knotts Heaston.He was in the first class graduating from Conotton Valley High School in 1957. He was a lifelong farmer and retired from Gradall in 1999 after 38 years of service. He enjoyed hunting and karaoke singing.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Sharon Howell Heaston; and a brother, Oliver Heaston II.Surviving are two daughters, Sandra (Jon) Jones of Sherrodsville and Cynthia (Patrick) Soos of Louisville; a son Ray Heaston of New Philadelphia; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Norma Jean Hill of Galena and Anna Simeral of Adena and a brother James Heaston of Dover.Services were held April 6, 2008 at Koch Funeral Home, Scio. NEW ATHENS - Valeria Kurucz, 89, New Athens died Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at Harrison Community Hospital, Cadiz, Ohio. She was born March 1, 1919 in Maynard, Ohio a daughter of the late Steve and Marie Mikulic Hrica. She was a member of the Cadiz Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, a homemaker, and enjoyed making quilts and giving them to her grandchildren.She was preceded in death in addition to her parents; by her husband, John Kurucz in 1992; a daughter Candace Bintz; a brother Steve Hrica; and a sister Stelle Pempek.Surving are a son, John L. Kurucz and his wife Mary of New Athens; 2 daughters: Yvonne Dunlap and her husband Harold of Cadiz and Illene Toto and her husband Stanley of Painesville, Ohio; 8 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. Dean Oscar Clark
UPPER ARLINGTON - Dean Oscar Clark, Ph.D., age 81, passed away April 1, 2008 at his home in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Dean was born at home in Freeport, Oahio on February 20, 1927. He was the valedictorian of his class at Freeport High School.After graduation, Dean worked for Hercules Motors until he was old enough to serve in the U.S. Army in 1945. He served as a Technical Sergeant and was stationed in Yokohama, Japan as part of the U.S. occupation force at the end of World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946.He attended The Ohio State University where he earned the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Education, cum laude, in 1949, Master of Arts in 1950, and Doctor of Philosophy in 1956. He was a founding member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity and later served as National Scholarship Chairman and National Director of Academic Affairs. He was recently honored by Alpha Kappa Lambda with a scholarship and academy established in his name. He was also a member of Phi Alpha Theta honor society and Alpha Kappa Delta professional fraternity. Dean worked as a Teacher in Xenia, Ohio, a High School Principal in Ada, Ohio and Newcomerstown, Ohio, Dean of the Department of Education at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio, Director of Certification for the State of Ohio Department of Education, Registrar for The Ohio State University from 1964-1973, and Director of Admissions and Records for Edison Community College in Fort Myers, Florida. He was a Substitute Teacher for Upper Arlington, Hilliard, and Wellington Schools. He served as Chairman of the Membership and Inspection Committee of the Ohio College Association from 1971-1974. His articles on education were published in more than 30 newspapers, magazines, and educational journals.He was a former member of the Upper Arlington Board of Education, Civic Association, and Rotary.Dean was an avid gardener and after retirement, enjoyed sharing his knowledge of gardening by working part time at Plantland. His hobbies also included genealogy and history. He was an active member at First Community Church and had many lifelong friends in Couples Circle 13. He will be remembered and deeply missed by many friends and his family.A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Dean is preceded in death by his parents, John Elzy and Marjorie Steffey Clark, his sister Helen Clark Shultz, and brother, John P. (Jack) Clark. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marcia Stewart Clark, his children John and Lauren Clark, Louise and Greg Johnston, and Paula Clark; four grandchildren: Evan and Elizabeth Clark, and Ashley and Amanda Johnston; his brother Donald and Ruth Clark, and many nieces and nephews.Visitation was held on Friday at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, OH 43221. A celebration of life service was held at 2 p.m on April 5 in the main sanctuary at First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd, Columbus, OH 43212. A reception will follow the service. Rev. Mary Elizabeth Ellenbaugh, 81, Cadiz, died Thursday, April 3, 2008 at Harrison Community Hospital, Cadiz, Ohio. She was born January 25, 1927 in Uhrichsville, Ohio a daughter of the late Samuel and Bessie Briggs Maple.She was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Cadiz and a housewife. She was preceded in death in addition to her parents, by her husband Ray Alvin Ellenbaugh; 2 sons: William and Thomas; 5 brothers: Hardy, Norman, Roy, Charles and Otis Maple; and 3 sisters: Grace Ross, Helen Bower and Nancy Gailbreath.She is survived by 2 sons: Rev. Ray Ellenbaugh and his wife Helen of Jewett and James Ellenbaugh of Scio; 3 daughters: Linda Ellenbaugh of Cadiz, Mary Jane Zagata of White Fish, Montana and Bonnie Ellenbaugh.Private interment at the convenience of the family. Bernard Joseph Toole
TIPPECANOE - Bernard Joseph Toole, 77, Tippecanoe, died April 3, 2008 in Aultman Hospital, Canton.He was born Sept. 7, 1930 in Zanesville, a son of the late John William and Lillian C. (Crock) Toole.A resident of the area for over 25 years, he had previously lived in Springfield. Locally, he was a heavy equipment operator for Dutch Valley Industries and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Dennison. He loved hunting and fishing, and playing euchre with his friends and family.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wif4e Doris A. (Schott) Toole and two brothers, Bill and Donald Toole.Surviving are two sons, Michael J. Toole and Shannon Wahl of Springfield and Patrick Allen Toole and wife Beverly of Santa Barbara, Calif.; six daughters, Linda Davis and husband Mike of Cincinnati, Susan Toole of Dayton, Julie Billet and husband Jim of Springfield, Karen Christy of Chapel Hill, N.C., Amy O'Toole of Beach City, Oh and Carla Toole of Gold Beach, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Raymond and David Toole both of Zanesville and numerous nieces and nephews.In keeping with is wishes there will be no public visitation or services. He will be interred beside his wife in Springfield's Calvary Cemetery.
Mary Jane Erwin, 85
SCIO Mary Jane Erwin, 85, of Scio, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008 in Aultman Hospital, Canton, surrounded by her family.Born June 5, 1922 in Uhrichsville, she was a daughter of the late Melvin Fred Fowler and Nora Mae Wetzel Fowler. She graduated from Carrollton High School in 1940. She was a ware dresser at Scio Pottery for 35 years and owned and operated Erwin's Greenhouse in Scio for 30 years.Mary Jane was a Jehovah's Witness by faith and enjoyed sewing, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, William Erwin, whom she married in 1945, and a half-brother Pete Davis. Surviving are her children Sally Winn, Evelyn (Tim) Miller, Billy (Karen) Erwin, Buster (Cathy) Erwin, Becky Erwin and Mary Jane Price, all of Scio; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.Services will be held Saturday, May 10, 2008 in Koch Funeral Home, Scio. Roy H. Snyder, 90
CADIZ - Roy H. Snyder, 90, Cadiz, died Thursday, May 8, 2008 at his home. He was born July 31, 1917 in Hopedale, Ohio a son of the late William Edward Snyder and Eva Fox Snyder Sizemore.Roy was a member of the First Church of Christ in Cadiz; a retired farmer and "B" Shovel operator for Hanna Coal Company; UMWA; and was an avid fisherman.He was preceded in death in addition to his parents; by his wife, Mildred L. Bumgardner Snyder on July 18, 1997; a son Donald Milliken; a granddaughter, Tammy Chaffen; an infant granddaughter; a son-in-law, Kenneth Swelbar; 3 brothers: Ed, Lawrence, and Tom Snyder; and 3 sisters: Iva B. Walrath, Eva Dorothy Joseph Hoobler, and Irene Wilson. Roy is survived by four daughters: Miriam Workley and her husband Lynn of Scio, Karen Swelbar Williams and her husband John of Chester, West Virginia, Kathy Damaska and her husband Jack of Beaver Falls, Pennyslvania, and Nila Swallie and her husband Allen of Barnesville; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Jane Milliken of Germantown, Ohio.Calling hours will be held Sunday, May 18, 2-5 and Monday, May 19, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz. John Henry King Jr.
John Henry King Jr., 76, of Cadiz, died Monday, May 1, 2000, at the Harrison Community Hospital in Cadiz. He was born in Marion, IN, on May 7, 1923, the son of the late John Henry King Sr. and Mable Marie Clester King.
He was a retired construction worker of 31 years for Emery Construction, Kissimmee, FL. He attended the East Warren St. Church of Christ, Cadiz and was a member of the Harrison County Coon Hunters Association; an avid saltwater fisherman and a bee keeper in Florida.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Karl King.
Surviving are his wife, Mildren Mattern King of Cadiz; two sons, Jerry of Kissimmee and John Lee of Garden City, KA; two daughters, Teresa King Freiburger of Kissimmee and Rita King Gallegas of Huntington, IN; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; four stepsons, Don Zitko of Scio, Ken Zitko of Cadiz, Larry Winter and Bert Winter, both of Kissimmee; two sisters, Mrs. Dave (Joan) Barker of Crossville, TN, and Mrs. Ed (Betty) Roberts of Homestead, FL.
Friends will be received Friday, May 5, from 4-9 p.m., at the Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz, where the funeral will be Saturday, May 6, at 11 a.m. with Evangelist Howard Hallmark officiating. Burial will follow in Cadiz Union Cemetery, Cadiz.

Ernest W. "Ernie" Emhoff
Ernest W. "Ernie" Emhoff, of Tuscarawas, OH, died Monday, May 1, 2000, of natural causes while turkey hunting in Rush Township. He was born in Uhrichsville on June 16, 1932, the son of the late George William Emhoff and Alice Smith Emhoff.
He was a retired front end loader operator for Central Fuel Company of Dover, where he had been employed for 19 years.
He attended the Sugarcreek Free Methodist church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alberta Thornton, and a grandson, Daniel Rogers.
He is survived by his wife, Mina L. Touvell Emhoff, whom he married Jan. 25, 1958; two daughters, Mrs. Dan (Crystal) Rogers of Toledo, OH, and Mrs. Chuck (Amber) Krebs of New Philadelphia; a son, Arnie G. Emhoff of Dennison; nine grandchildren, Gabriel, Samuel, Caleb and Josiah Rogers, Sara and Katie Jo Emhoff, Zane Shihloh and Shayla Krebs; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Corinne) Gintz of New Philadelphia, and Mrs. Larry (Joyce) Rauschenbach of Dover.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 4, at 11 a.m. in the Uhrich-Hostettler Funeral Home, Uhrichsville, with Pastor Dwight Mason officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia. Calling hours will be from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday.
