Naomi "Mardell" Sickle
Naomi "Mardell" Sickle, 71, Cadiz, died April 3, 2002 at Carriage Inn of Cadiz.
She was born Feb. 19, 1931 in Cadiz, a daughter of the late Agnes Thompson Ice.
She was a former employee of Custer Pharmacy and Ohio Power Company in Cadiz.
She was a member of Scott United Methodist Church in Cadiz. A graduate of Cadiz High School, she was an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society and a member of the Cadiz VFD auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her mother and two uncles, Carl and Ray Thompson.
Surviving are her husband, Ray Sickle of Cadiz; a son, Larry Sickle of Cadiz; a daughter, Mrs. David (Amy) Ossman of Hollywood, Fl.; a grandson, Evan Ossman of Hollywood and a brother, Jerry Ice of Hopedale.
Calling hours will be Friday at 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz. Service will be Saturday, April 6, 2 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Hooker officiating. Burial in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.

Shirley A. Harding
Shirley A. Harding, 72, Delaware, Ohio, died April 4, 2002.
She was born April 29, 1929, a daughter of the late Patience Hamilton and Dennis Harper.
She retired from March Electric where she was employed for 20 years.
She was preceded in death by husband William.
Surviving are three sons, William (Marlene) of Delaware, Allen (Anita) of Cambridge and George (Kathy) of Cambridge; a brother David Harper of Lancaster; 10 grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson.
Visiting hours will be Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home 139 South 9th Street, Cambridge. Funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with interment at Greenmount Union Cemetery, Freeport.

Bertha E. Gilbert
Bertha E. Gilbert, 85, Cherry Valley Rd., Hopedale, died April 2, 2002 at Trinity West Hospital, Steubenville.
She was born Nov. 2, 1916 in Jewett, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mabel Hines Slentz.
She was a member of the Cadiz Nazarene Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles (Blair) Gilbert; a son David and several brothers and sisters.
Surviving are four sons, Harold Gilbert and wife Barbara of Wintersville, Carl Gilbert and wife Vera of Kenosha, Wis., Ralph Gilbert and wife Dianna of Kenosha, Charles Gilbert and wife Sherri of Carson City, Nev.; a daughter, Evelyn Staton and husband William of Newman, Ga.; a brother, Ralph Slentz of New Philly, Ohio; a sister, Anabelle Slentz of Uhrichsville; 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Blackburn Funeral Home at 324 High Street in Hopedale on Friday,2-4 and 7-9. Service will be at the funeral home Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ernest Creamer officiating.

Viola Mae Dayton
Viola Mae Dayton, 81, Hopedale, died April 2, 2002 at Trinity West after a long illness.
She was born near Hopedale on Jan. 6, 1921, a daughter of the late Sylvester and Olive Mae Graham Albaugh.
She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Dayton; parents; two brothers Eugene and Howard and a sister, Katherine Carter.
Surviving are a brother, James Albaugh of Hopedale; a sister, Grace Mutton and husband Jack of Steubenville.
Friends may call at the Blackburn Funeral Home 324 High Street, Hopedale, today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Service will be held at the funeral home Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Stanley Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow at Kilgore Cemetery.

John H. Canfield
John H. "Jack" Canfield, 86, Leesville, died April 2, 2002 at Sunnyslope Nursing Home, Bowerston.
He was born March 9, 1916 in Branson, Michigan, a son of the late William M. Canfield and Celia Moore Canfield.
He was a graduate of Sylvania, Ohio's Burnham High School in 1936. He was a member of the Leesville Faith Community Chapel. He was a member of the American Legion and had been a Jr. Assistant Scout Master with Maumee Troop #16 of the Boy Scouts of America. He served his country in the Army during World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre, the Japanese occupation and the European Theatre where he was awarded the Purple Heart. In 1989, he retired from the Army Corps of Engineers from his post at Tappan Dam. He had previously worked for the Ohio Division of Wildlife's Fisheries Division.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Norman and Bill Canfield; four sisters, Vivian "Linda" Sheppeson, Ione Kinney, Ila Canfield and Wilda Canfield.
Surviving are his wife Evelyn M. Canfield; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Myrna Jo) Hugh of Sherrodsville and Christine Mae Mills of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, David Charles Canfield and wife Janet of Mansfield and William Clark Canfield and wife Paula of Columbus; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Ronald Gesaman and wife Dolores of Salem; numerous nieces and nephews.
Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2002 at R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home, Inc., Dennison with Pastor Doug Mallernee officiating. Burial in Sherrodsville Memorial Gardens, Sherrodsville. Visitation will be Friday April 5, 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Military Committal Service will be April 6 at the graveside.

Nellie Evans
Nellie Evans, 83, Cadiz, died March 30, 2002 at Trinity Medical Center, West, Steubenville.
She was born Aug. 10, 1918 in Braxton County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Willis Stalnaker and Mary Green Stalnaker.
She was a housewife. She was a member of the Rose Hill United Methodist Church, Nicholas County, West Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ezra W. "Dick" Evans; parents; four brothers; two sisters and a grandson, she was the last surviving member of her family.
Surviving are three sons, Arden Evans, William E. Evans and Noel Evans, all of Cadiz; five daughters, Mrs. William (Mildred) Fisher of Mannington, W.Va.; Mrs. Donald (Toots) Ashcraft of Cadiz, Mrs. Gene (Dale) Stire of Shinnston, W.Va., Mrs. Eddie (Molly) Sandy of Enterprise, W.Va. and Mrs. Larry (Wanda) Dickerson of Cadiz; 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held April 2, 2002 at Enterprise 100F Cemetery in Enterprise, W.Va. with the Rev. Ernest Creamer officiating.
Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia June Pettay
Virginia June Pettay, 80, Freeport, died April 1, 2002 in Twin City Hospital, Dennison. She was born Dec. 14, 1921 in Dover, a daughter of the late Clarence Widder and Beulah Meek Widder.
She was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School. She retired from the Freeport State Bank where she was a teller and she was also employed by the Freeport Press as a secretary. She was a member of the Stillwater Valley Post VFW Auxiliary, a member of the Order of Eastern Star and enjoyed playing cards and bingo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Pettay; parents; a brother Kenneth Meek and a sister Lucille Jogerst.
Surviving are a son Donald D. Pettay and wife Joyce of Freeport; a daughter Suellen Mills and husband Dean of Freeport; a sister, Doris Aldergate of Newcomerstown; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002 in Koch Funeral Home, 216 S. High Street, Freeport with the Rev. Harry Milligan officiating. Burial will follow in Greenmount Union Cemetery, Freeport. Eastern Star service will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m.
The family requests memorial contributions to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 247-B East Livingston Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43215.
