John Walter Nelson

A memorial service for John Walter Nelson, 72, of Richmond, Ky., will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 13 at the Berea Society of Friends Meeting House, 300 Harrison Road (off Center Street), Berea, Ky., located in the AMERC Complex.
Walt died Nov. 24, 2003. He was born Sept. 23, 1931, in Hartford, Conn., the son of Jack P. and Elena Nelson.
Walt graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Trinity College in Connecticut and received a divinity degree from Yale University. After serving as pastor of churches in Newark and Sheffield Lake, Ohio, he earned a Ph.D. in English from The Ohio State University. He was a professor at Eastern Kentucky University from 1970 to 1996.
Walt was a charter member of the American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies, held several offices in the local American Association of University Professors and was a faithful member of the College English Association, Kentucky Philological Association, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa honorary societies, and served on many EKU committees.
Walt published numerous poems, reviews and scholarly articles. His community activities included chairman of the local campaign for Common Cause Monitoring Committee, president of the Richmond Federal Credit Union, and service on several committees at Richmond's First Presbyterian Church.
An active member of the Berea Society of Friends (Quakers), Walt served on several committees and also as clerk.
Survivors include his wife, Delores Nelson; two daughters, Greta Nelson of Irmo, S.C., and Sara Leff (Dr. Richard) of Chadds Ford, Pa.; two grandsons, David and Michael Leff of Chadds Ford, Pa.; and a sister, Janet (Harry) Milliman of Newtown, Conn.
Walt will live on through the treasured memories of his family and many good friends.

Anna Williams Evans

A private service for Anna Williams Evans, 82, of Heath, formerly of Granville, will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Evans, retired owner of Anne's Gift Shop in Newark and former manager of the Aileen Dunkin Shop in Granville, died Nov. 25, 2003, at the Newark Healthcare Centre. She was born Aug. 13, 1921, in Lancaster to the late Mary Hilda (Williams) and Henry Rea Williams.
Mrs. Evans attended Newark schools and was a 1938 graduate of Lancaster High School. She was a former member of the Granville Fellowship, Soroptimist International of America, and the American Business Women of America. For many years she was active in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and was a former instructor of hospital volunteers at Licking Memorial Hospital.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, William H. (Hal) and Christine Evans of York, Maine; granddaughter, Jessica Evans of Berwick, Maine; brother and sister-in-law, George R. and Mona Williams of Newark; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, E. William Evans, who died March 23, 2000.

Charlene H. Evans

A funeral service for Helen Charlene Evans, 87, of Thornville, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Boring-Sheridan Funeral Home, Thornville Chapel, with Pastor Leslie Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, in West Jefferson.
Mrs. Evans died Tuesday at her residence. She was born April 22, 1916, in Madison County to the late Frank N. and Ruth (Heise) Phillips. She worked at the Inn Town Restaurant and Thornville Pharmacy. She was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, and the Women's Guild in the church.
Survivors include her daughter Sheila (David) Vermillion; grandchildren Dawn (Terry) Neibarger of Maryville, Tenn., Jodi Kelly of Thornville, Rhonda (Steve) Kennedy of Heath; six great-grandchildren; sister Clarabel Littler and sister-in-law Sue Green both of London, Ohio; special friend Pleasant Vermillion of Grandville; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Forest Bryson Evans, 1982; an infant daughter; sister Dorothy Mae Siebold; brother Charles Phillips; an infant sister and an infant brother.
Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alice C. Flautt

A mass of Christian burial for Alice C. Flautt, 87, of Somerset, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery.
Mrs. Flautt died Wednesday morning at her residence. She was born Jan. 16, 1916, near Somerset, the daughter of the late Henry E. and Mary E. Snider Reichley.
She was a lifelong resident of the Somerset community, and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Rosary Altar Society. She was a life member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia. In 1987 she retired as clerk at the Village Store in Somerset after 15 years of service.
Surviving are three sons, Michael J. Flautt, of Somerset, Raymond H. Flautt, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Timothy M. Flautt, of Columbus; one daughter, Mary Y. (Mike) Felt, of Brownsville; three grandsons, Jacob and Kyle Felt, and Philip Flautt.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, Henry A. Flautt (Oct. 14, 1957); three brothers, Albert, Charles and Joe Reichley; three sisters, Mary Young, Isabelle Smith, and Agnes Miller.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home in Somerset, where prayer service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Friday evening.

Maxine (Fender) Thompson, 84, of Newark, died Nov. 26, 2003, at the Licking Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 20, 1918, in Ada, Ohio.

Rev. Ronald L. Chrisley

A funeral service for Rev. Ronald L. Chrisley, 68, of Newark, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church, with Rev. Sue Ellen Miller, Newark District Superintendent officiating. Burial will follow in Croton Cemetery.
Rev. Chrisley died Wednesday at his residence. He was born Aug. 10, 1935, in Zanesville, Ohio, to the late Harless and Dorothy Jean (Ansel) Chrisley.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian B. "Vickie" (Huffman) Chrisley, whom he married Feb. 14, 1977; children, Kelsey Chrisley and Rev. Hillary Chrisley of California, Dr. Ronald L. Chrisley of England, Michael Barnett, Megan Anderson, Jenneca Chrisley, Jamie Chrisley, Jacob Chrisley, Jonathan Chrisley, MacKenzie Chrisley all of Newark; grandchildren, Miranda, Malyn, Mariah, Coleman; brother, James (Karen) Chrisley of Illinois; sisters, Carole (William) Dillehay of Florida and Christine Harr of Columbus.
Rev. Chrisley, a Captain in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam, served 14 years as a navigator and received the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Rev. Chrisley retired in 2002 from the West Ohio Conference United Methodist Church with 30 years service. He had served United Methodist Churches in Lockbourne, South Bloomfield, Croton, Zanesville, Pasco-Pemberton, Mt. Sterling, Epworth in Lima, First Church in Springboro, Church of the Good Shepherd in North Baltimore, Leipsic and Christ United Methodist in Newark.
He was an avid reader and a man of many talents.
Calling hours will be observed Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Vensil-Orr and Chute Funeral Home, 1850 W. Main St. Calling hours will also be observed Saturday noon to 2 p.m. at the church, 10 N. Cedar St.

Cleo Makris

A funeral service for Cleo Makris, 98, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 N. High St., Columbus.
Mrs. Makris died Wednesday at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter J. Makris and parents Eleni and Stavros Heleotis.
She is survived by a sister, Athene Agapctos of Asbury Park, N.J.; daughter, Alexandra Makris Simakis; son, Nicholas P. Makris, both of Columbus; grandchildren, Andrea Theo Simakis of Cleveland and Klea Patrice Simakis of New York City.
Cleo was a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Church.
Friends may call at the O.R. Wodyard Co. Chapel, 2990 Bethel Road, Columbus, from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Internment will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newark.
