Doris L. Stemen
Sept. 2, 1912-Dec. 23, 2003
A memorial service for Doris L. Stemen, 91, of Granville, will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 3 at the Licking Baptist Church, 1380 Beaver Run Road, Hebron, with Pastor Lonny J. Aleshire officiating. A private graveside service will be held in Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville.
Doris, former owner of the Evergreens Restaurant in Granville and owner of horses (trotters) that raced throughout the Midwest and Canada, died Dec. 23, 2003, after a brief illness, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center operated by Hospice of Central Ohio in Newark. Although her body failed her, her mind remained strong until the very end and she died surrounded by people she loved.
Born Doris Letha Strickler in Granville on Sept. 2, 1912, she was the youngest child of Maude (Ackley) and Harry S. Strickler. Doris lived her very full life in a house built on the same land where she was born. Doris managed the dining services at Denison University from 1936 until 1953. In 1951, in an era when few women worked outside the home, she opened the Evergreens Restaurant on Ohio 16 in Granville. Doris' determination, hard work, and engaging spirit led to a successful business with extremely loyal customers. People knew where to find her: She was at work early in the morning to open the doors and at night to close them. Then she would walk home, type up the menus for the next day, and run them off on a hand-cranked mimeograph machine.
Over the course of 35 years, the restaurant staff grew close and became Doris' other family. The restaurant, next to her home, was a fixture in Granville for half a century. It was renowned for its homemade pies and cakes and relaxed atmosphere. Customers from many years ago still wax nostalgic about the Evergreens famous Red Velvet Cake, baked by Doris' sister, Lois Pinkerton. When the restaurant was destroyed by a fire in 2001, many in the community were devastated. It was a very personal loss for Doris and the Evergreens family.
Retiring from restaurant work did not slow Doris down in the slightest. You could rarely reach her by telephone during the week, as most every day her schedule was full. Whether playing euchre or bridge, participating in a church-related activity, cheering on one of her horses during a race at Scioto Downs, or traveling to see family, Doris was always doing what she loved most: Spending time in the company of loved ones.
She was a skillful card-player. She could successfully predict a trifecta at the races. But she also had uncanny luck. One time she bought a lotto ticket but misplaced it so she bought another with the same number and the number hit. Later, she found the first ticket and ended up with twice the winnings.
But the network of friends who surrounded her until the end had nothing to do with luck. These friendships were borne of Doris' generosity and love. She was caring and thoughtful, never forgetting to send a birthday card with a well-picked sentiment -- she would only buy cards if the verse rang true. Sometimes she would write, "I really mean this!" on the inside of a card, and you would know it was sincere.
When Doris Stemen turned 90 in the fall of 2002, her family and friends hosted a reception to celebrate. Over 100 invitations went out -- but more than 190 people attended. Many times Doris spoke in awe of that party, overwhelmed by the number of attendees. But anyone who knew Doris was not surprised. In her 91 years, Doris touched an extraordinary number of lives, in ways big and small.
It was impossible to summarize her life in a few words. Those who knew Doris give snapshots of her character: They remark on her dignity, her sense of humor, her practicality, her compassion, her insight, her generosity, her wisdom, and her never-ending good advise. Hers was a life that was rich beyond description and brimming with love for those lucky enough to have been touched by it.
Doris was a 1930 graduate of Granville High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Granville, Ohio Restaurant Association, Business and Professional Women's Association, Ohio Harness Horsemen's Association, and United States Trotting Association.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Robert N. and Nancy Aebersold of Slippery Rock, Pa.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Alicia Aebersold and Lester Burke, of Washington, D.C., and Amanda Aebersold Couture and Paul Couture of Greensboro, N.C.; sister, Lois T. Pinkerton of Granville; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew Couture (age 4), Elliot Couture (age 2) and Miranda Aebersold-Burke (age 1).
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Keith B. Stemen, who died in 1998; sister, Grace Merriman, who died Nov. 8 of this year; and far too many close friends.
The McPeek Funeral Home in Granville is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, 1984-A Coffman Road, Newark, Ohio 43055-9810; First Baptist Church, 115 W. Broadway, Granville, Ohio 43023; Licking Baptist Church, 1380 Beaver Run Road, S.E., Hebron, Ohio 43025; or simply by telling someone you love how much they mean to you. Doris would have liked it that way.
