James Howard Wray

A funeral service for James Howard Wray, 78, of Newark, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Heath Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service, with the Rev. Jeff Pound officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Wray, a member of the Masonic Lodge, died Jan. 4, 2004, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. He was born Oct. 20, 1925, in Clinton County, Ky., to the late Charles Edward Wray and Della Mae (Staley) Wray.
Mr. Wray worked for 42 years at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron. He was a member of the Akron Baptist Temple and attended the First Baptist Church of Heath. He was a volunteer at Licking Memorial Hospital and was active in the Republican Party.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Mabel (Fairchild) Wray; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Eva Wray of Heath; granddaughters, Nicole Westbrook and Candida Pernotto; great-grandchildren, Dani, Emily, Ben and Vinny; brother, John T. Wray of Richmond, Ky.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mona and Granville Pierce of Lexington, Ky.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Estelle Wray; and one sister, Mary Helen Sibery.

Billie Joe Dutcher

A funeral service for Billie Joe Dutcher, 69, of Florence, S.C., will be held at 3 p.m. today in the Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Dutcher died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, in a Columbia, S.C., hospital after an illness. He was born in Marion, Ohio, a son of the late Harold and Zanah Mary Sattler Dutcher.
Mr. Dutcher was a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of the V.F.W. Post 3181, and a member of the American Legion Post 1. He was retired after 40 years as a driver for Koppers of Florence. He attended East Side Free Will Baptist Church.
Mr. Dutcher enjoyed hunting and fishing, and flying remote-controlled airplanes. He volunteered to transport V.A. patients to the Veterans Hospital in Columbia, S.C.
Surviving are his wife, Travis Juanita Rowell Dutcher of the home; sons, Pastor William Earle (Connie) Dutcher and Robert Steven Dutcher, both of Baltimore, Md., Raymond (Kathy) Hicks of Florence, S.C., and Travis (Maria) Hicks of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Dixie (Randy) Kuntz of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Annie Langston of Columbia, S.C.; three brothers, Bob (Ginny) Dutcher, Jack (Susan) Dutcher and Tom (Judy) Dutcher, all of Newark; two sisters, Blanche (Weldon) Johnson of Lakeland, Fla., and Connie (Russ) Levingston of Newark; and eight grandchildren.
Jasmine Lea Knotts

A funeral service for Jasmine Lea Knotts, infant daughter of Travis Knotts and Kim Baldwin of Newark, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Kauber-Miller Funeral Home in Pataskala. Interment will follow in Pataskala Cemetery.
Jasmine Lea passed away on Sunday Jan. 4, 2004. She was born in Newark on Sept. 2, 2003.
Along with her parents, she is survived by one brother, Travis C. Baldwin; grandparents, Becky Hulet of Johnstown, Jack and Patty Knotts of Reynoldsburg, and Cletus and Debbie Dillon of Pataskala; great-grandparents; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Stephani Danielle Galloway

A memorial service for Stephani D. Galloway, 18, of Newark, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Charles W. Noble Sr. officiating.
Ms. Galloway entered Heaven on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004. She was born June 3, 1985, in Frankfort, Germany, to Bernadette (Austin) Galloway of St. Louis, Mo., and Gregory Galloway of Reidsville, N.C.
Ms. Galloway recently became a nurses aide at Arlington Nursing Home in Newark. She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. She was an avid poet and was well on her way to becoming an established musician, and while in school, she belonged to Horizons.
Survivors include both parents; one son, Tahj-Michael Galloway of St. Louis, Mo.; nephew, Taten-Michael Galloway of Newark; one brother, Steven Galloway of Newark; one sister, Tiffany Galloway of St. Louis, Mo.; second father, Larry Thomas of Newark; maternal grandparents, Helen Roulette of Newark, and Bernard Austin of Newark; paternal grandparents, Betsy Martin-Galloway and William Galloway, both of Reidsville, N.C.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Valena May Parsons
Jan. 5, 2004
A celebration of the life of Valena May Parsons will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Kauber-Miller Funeral Home in Pataskala, with Pastor Reuben Cabanillias, Pastor Gerry Peters and Pastor John Bascom officiating. Interment will follow in Pataskala Cemetery.
Valena died peacefully at the age of 107 on Jan. 5, 2004.
Living most of her life in Pataskala, she had graduated from Pataskala High School and attended normal school at Denison University. She was a beloved school teacher for 32 years and began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. The lives of many students attending Slough, Outville, Peters, Jersey and Pataskala schools were touched by her.
She was a faithful member of Pataskala United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Roy Parsons, two sisters and a brother preceded Valena in death.
She is survived by her three children, Charlene (Jim) Bascom of Granville, Paul (Jean) Parsons and Betty Jean Brown, both of Pataskala; seven grandchildren, Melody (Dennis) Fry, Cynthia (Allen) Fender, Chris (Vici) Parsons, Shawn Parsons, Tim Brown, Melissa Brown and Kristel (John) Quarti; and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Katie Quarti.
She will always be remembered for her total devotion to her family and her joyful, warm spirit. She had a long and fulfilled life and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Marilyn Mae Manning

A funeral service for Marilyn Mae Manning, 63, of Nashport, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Boring-Sheridan Funeral Home, Thornville Chapel, with the Rev. Doug Lynn officiating. Burial to immediately follow the service at Zion Ridge Cemetery, Thornville.
Mrs. Manning passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville. She was born Aug. 24, 1940, in Thornville, to the late Clifford and Evelyn (Brunney) Hamby.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Manning; sons, Everett Eugene (Robin) Angle and Theodore G. (Pam) Angle; daughter, Cynthia Diane Angle; stepchildren, William D. (Jeannie) Manning and Kimberly (Charles) Wittman; sisters, Joyce (Donald) Wollenberg, Mary (Fred) Floyd and Mona Weaver; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; special friend, Alice Ware; loving cat "Pixie"; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Winifred J. Lane

A graveside service for Winifred J. Lane, 90, of Newark will be held at a later date in Otterbein Cemetery in Westerville.
Winifred died Jan. 6, 2004, at the Selma Markowicz Care Center in Newark. She was born Aug. 15, 1913, in Dennison, Ohio, to the late George and Bertha Ella (Conaway)McFeaters.
She worked as a supervisor at the Bureau of Employment Services.
She is survived by a daughter, Joy (John) Henson of Utica; three grandchildren, Keith (Becky) Henson of Washington, Brenda Henson and Brian Young of Westerville, and J.T. Henson of Utica; five great-grandchildren, Mandy, Andy, Dimitri, Angela and Christian; two great-great-grandchildren, Codey and Isiah; niece, Bettie Davis of Newark; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Dick; and a sister, Dora.

A memorial service for Martha Rose Taylor, 78, will be held at Beymer Memorial Methodist Church, 700 Lake Howard Drive, N.W., Winter Haven, Fla.
Mrs. Taylor died of natural causes on Jan. 3, 2003. She was born in Newark on June 2, 1925.
She is survived by her husband, Rupert; her sons, Steven, Jeffrey, Douglas and Gregory; and seven grandchildren.

Dollie (Clark) Waddell

A graveside service for Dollie (Clark) Waddell, formerly of Newark, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Waddell died Jan. 2, 2004, in Granite Bay, Calif.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Frank Bodie of Granite Bay, Calif.; granddaughter, Katharine Bodie and her husband, Walter Ulrich of Elk Grove, Calif.; and grandsons, Gregory Bodie of Sacramento, Calif., and Michael Bodie of Pasadena, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Waddell, in 1968.

Betty Joan Friend

A Mass of Christian Burial for Betty Joan Friend, 76, of Hebron, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Buckeye Lake, with Monsignor Frank Meagher officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lancaster.
Mrs. Friend, who was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, died Jan. 7, 2004, at her residence. She was born Oct. 19, 1927, in Lancaster, to the late Archie and Susan (Hyme) Hanna.
Mrs. Friend was a volunteer at Licking Memorial Hospital. She was a pastoral assistant at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. She also enjoyed taking part in many other activities at the church as well.
Surviving are a son, James Alan (Pam) Friend of Hebron; daughters, Vicki (Randy) Gillham of Newark, and Susan Roberts of Hebron; grandchildren, Jeff Gillham, Mark Gillham, Joe Friend and Jon Friend; sister, Lucille (Preston) Male of Canton; brothers, Mark (Earlene) Hanna of Thornville, and Tom (Pat) Hanna of Bremen; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday with a wake service being at 7:30 p.m. at the Kirkersville Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service, 285 E. Main St., Kirkersville.

Charles H. 'Salty' Settles Jr.

A private memorial service for Charles H. "Salty" Settles Jr., 84, of Nashport, will be held at a later date to celebrate "Salty's" life.
Charles passed away at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Genesis Morrison House Hospice. He was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Zanesville, the son of the late C. Harold and Gladys Benjamin Settles Sr.
Charles was a graduate of Nashport High School and former owner of Settles General Store in Nashport and Dresden Implement Co.
Charles volunteered for Six County Inc. Crisis Hotline, was a former member of Muskingum County Board of Elections -- Central Committee, and former president and board member of Muskingum County Drug, Alcohol and Substance Abuse Council.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice McCrory Settles; sons, Terry Settles of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Jeff (Nancy) Settles of Columbus; daughter, Deanna (Jim) Buddelmeyer of Zanesville; seven grandchildren, Toby Settles, Corey Fularz, Kelly Palmer, Julie Tisdale and Colby, Aliceson and Charles Buddelmeyer; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Eileen Shook of Zanesville; brother, Bill (Carol) Settles of Newark; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding Charles in death were his parents; and granddaughter, Christian Settles.
A caring cremation will be held by Bryan Funeral Home, Zanesville.
