Nellie Poorman "Reed" Sharp

May 29, 1923-Aug. 16, 2002

A funeral service for Nellie Poorman "Reed" Sharp, 79, of Somerset Care Center, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bope-Thomas Funeral Home, Somerset, with Pastor Linda Pinson officiating. Burial will be in Somerset Cemetery.

Mrs. Sharp died Aug. 16, 2002, at Somerset Care Center. She was born May 29, 1923, near Somerset, to the late Earl Walter and Emma M. Westall Poorman.

She was a member of the Somerset United Methodist Church, a charter member of the OAPSE Local 0359 and a bus driver for the Northern Local School District, retiring after for 44 years of service.

Mrs. Sharp is survived by her son, Jack E. Reed, of Phoenix; a sister, Mabel Reichley, of Somerset; and a brother, Paul E. Poorman, of Newark.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Dale Sharp, who died March 5, 1984; a brother, James E. Poorman; and an infant sister, Florence Poorman.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

L.M. "Jack" Barnes

Jan. 8, 1928-Aug. 16, 2002

A Mass of Christian Burial for L.M. "Jack" Barnes, 74, of Evansville, Ind., and formerly of Somerset, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, near Somerset, with Father Tony Breen as celebrant, assisted by Rev. Gene Dawson. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58 will provide full military honors.

Mr. Barnes, a World War II army and navy veteran, died Aug. 16, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville. He was born Jan. 8, 1928, in New Holland, Ohio, to the late Glen Sr., and Lucille Barnes.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and attended the Nativity Church in Evansville. He was a life member of Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58 and VFW 1388 of Buckeye Lake and Evansville Post 44, a member of 40 & 8, AmVets of Evansville Post 84, Riverbend Social Club and the Twin Towers. He was a former member of Somerset Lions Club. He retired in 1985 from Sears, in Heath, after 32 years of service.

Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife of 54 years, Grace C. Barnes, whom he married Aug. 13, 1948; four sons, Gary C. and Treva Barnes, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Rodney D. and Debbie Barnes, of Millersport, Rick L. and Nancy Barnes, of Taylorsville, N.C., and B. Jeff Barnes, of Somerset; two daughters, Debi S. and Rick Ball, of Evansville, and Renee L. and Greg Starkey, of Somerset; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur Barnes and Glen S. Barnes, Jr., both of Richmond, Ind., and Tom Barnes, of California.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Glenna Emmert and Marie Harrist; a brother, Homer Barnes; and two infant brothers.

Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home, Somerset, where a prayer service will be at 7:45 p.m. Monday.

Robert Markle

Aug. 18, 2002

Funeral arrangements are incomplete for Robert Markle, 82, of Newark, who died Aug. 18, 2002, at the Newark Healthcare Centre.

Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Gertrude Rohrer

March 4, 1905-Aug. 18, 2002

A graveside service for Mary Gertrude Rohrer, 97, of Columbus, formerly of Newark, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Newark Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Rohrer, a teacher for 25 years at North Elementary on Deo Drive in Newark, died Aug. 18, 2002, at First Community Village in Columbus. She was born March 4, 1905, in Newark, to the late Howard and Anna Pyle.

Mrs. Rohrer played the violin with the Licking County Symphony for 16 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Ann "Maggie" Perkins of Columbus; son and daughter-in-law, Richard Neal and Kitty (Frank) Rohrer of Columbus; and grandchildren, Jeremy, Katie and Jonathan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph A. Rohrer, on June 13.

There will be no calling hours observed.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, 1984-A Coffman Road, Newark.

The Newark Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Yoho

July 18, 1920-Aug. 17, 2002

A funeral service for Mildred Yoho, 82, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Shaw-Davis Funeral Homes Beechwood-Clintonville Chapel. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery.

Miss Yoho, who retired from White Castle after 39 years of service, died Aug. 17, 2002, in Columbus. She was born July 18, 1920, to the late Elbert and Hazel (Robb) Yoho.

Miss Yoho loved water and made daily trips to Griggs Dam to feed the wild ducks. She also had a pontoon boat at Buckeye Lake.

She is survived by her sister, Ernestine Yoho Thierman; nephew, John Thierman; grand-niece, Alice Thierman; cousins, Vernon and Dora Robb; several Yoho cousins; aunt, Edna Robb; and several good friends, Darlene Harris, John Hunter and Doug Evans.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service at the funeral home, 4341 N. High St., Columbus.

W. Wendell Hartshorn

Sept. 15, 1914-Aug. 18, 2002

A funeral service for W. Wendell Hartshorn, 87, of Newark, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Newark Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service, with Pastor Jim Young officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Hartshorn, a retired farmer, died Aug. 18, 2002, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. He was born Sept. 15, 1914, in Newark, to the late Eugene and Lilly Dell (Shamp) Hartshorn.

Mr. Hartshorn attended Capital University. He was a former owner and operator of on the road trucks and a fleet of lime trucks.

He had been a member of Central Christian Church since 1937. He served on the Newark Township School Board for 10 years and was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Newark Maennerchor. He was supervisor of the South Licking Conservatory District and was a member of the Licking County Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy May (Stebelton) Hartshorn; sons and daughters-in-law, Terry R. and Elyce Hartshorn and William J. and Karen Hartshorn, all of Hanover; eight grandchildren, Chad (Linda), Brett (Jessica), Troy (Stacey), Todd (Jen), Tregg (Debbie), Keri (Craig) Griffith, and Travis and Trent; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 stepgrandchildren, Tonya (Lonnie) Higgins and Tim (Padenna) Maharg; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and two nephews, Larry Claggett and Charles Claggett Jr.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Claggett.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 59 N. Fifth St., Newark.

Charlotte J. Smith

Jan. 1, 1944-Aug. 24, 2002

A funeral service for Charlotte J. Smith, 58, of Heath and formerly of Buckeye Lake, will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Newark Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service, with Rev. Robert Knox officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Miss Smith, a member of Newark Eagles and Newark Moose, died Aug. 24, 2002, at the Heath Nursing and Convalescent Center. She was born Jan. 1, 1944, in Buckeye Lake, to the late Charles W. Smith Sr., and Kathryn (Neely) Smith.

She is survived by special friend, Clyde Braden, of Heath; son, Richard Smith, of Buckeye Lake; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Scott Brady, of Kentucky; granddaughter, Michelle Smith; brother and sister-in-law, Charles W. Jr. (Pearl) Smith; and half-sisters, Brenda (Victor) Pond and Sonja Smith.

Miss Smith was preceded in death by a half-sister and a half-brother.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, 59 N. 5th St., Newark.

Richard F. Kelley

May 7, 1917-July 18, 2002

A funeral service for Richard Fredrick Kelley, 85, of Sarasota, Fla., will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home with Pete Decker officiating. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery.

Mr. Kelley, a retired chemical engineer for Mead Paper Corp. in Escanaba, Mich., and Chillicothe, died July 18, 2002. He was born May 7, 1917, in Newark, to the late Fred and Maud Kelley.

Mr. Kelley graduated from The Ohio State University, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as chief petty officer. He moved to Sarasota, Fla., in 1982 from Escanaba, Mich., and was a member of the Central Methodist Church in Escanaba and the First United Methodist Church in Chillicothe. He was also a member of the Kiwanis in Escanaba, Toastmasters in Chillicothe, Escanaba Country Club, Mead Management Club in Escanaba and Chillicothe.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Kelley; daughters, Janice Magdziasz and Eileen Kelley, both of Florida, and Joann Kelley of Madison, Wis.; sisters, Kathryn Wise of Sun City Center, Fla., and Margaret Board and Shirley Robertson, both of Newark; brother, Jack Kelley of Heath; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 W. 168th St., New York, N.Y. 10032.
