Ralph L. Brooke

A funeral service for Ralph L. Brooke, 79, of Newark, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Newark Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service, with the Rev. William Rauch and Vicar Jonathan Kibler-McCabe officiating. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery.
Mr. Brooke, a graduate of The Ohio State University, died Oct. 13, 2002, at the Heath Nursing Home. He was born Jan. 7, 1923, in Newark, to the late Lee D. Brooke and Myrtle (Phillips) Brooke.
Mr. Brooke was a graduate of Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and served with the Merchant Marines during World War II. Following the war, he served in the Naval Reserves.
Mr. Brooke worked for almost 30 years as a sales executive with Lever Brothers. He was a member of Acme Lodge 554 F&AM, The Reserve Officers Association, United Commercial Travelers and the Newark Lions Club. He was also on the Republican Central Committee and was a past chairman of the Licking County Republican Party.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie (Vogan) Brooke; and son, Thomas Brooke of Proctorville.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Jane.

Theodore Edward Glover

A funeral service for Theodore Edward Glover, 81, of Heath, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne Cass officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Glover, a former inspector for Owens Corning, died Oct. 12, 2002, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center. He was born Dec. 2, 1920, in Newark, to the late Edward M. and Lucy (Luther) Glover.
Mr. Glover served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Heath Senior Citizens, Fiberglas 25 Year Club, V.F.W. and Fiberglas Retirees Club.
He is survived by his son, Ted (Ruth) Glover of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Kathy (Danny) Roy of Orange Park, Fla.; sisters, Myrtle (Bill) Frazier of Newark and Juanita Anderson of Citrus Heights, Calif.; brothers, Ronald (Rosemarie) Glover of Wayzata, Minn., and Donald (Nora) Glover of Norwalk, Calif.; and special friend, Blanche Drumm of Newark.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Indus (Hartman) Glover and Bernadine (Wood) Glover; brother, Carlos; sister, Christine; and grandson, Theodore.

E. Marguerite Jones

A funeral service for E. Marguerite Jones, 82, of Newark, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Central Christian Church, with the Rev. Robert Callender officiating. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery.
Mrs. Jones, a longtime active member of Central Christian Church, died Oct. 13, 2002, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. She was born April 8, 1920, in Homer, to the late John Henry and Rosanna Belle Spearman.
Mrs. Jones was a former secretary with the Licking County Commissioners office, and executive secretary at W.J. Camlin Company. She graduated from Homer High School and Newark Business College.
She is survived by her children, Gary L. (Darlene) Von Ins of Indianapolis, Ind., Sharry Pickrell of Dresden, Patricia (Donald) Martin of Newark, Larry (Debbie) Jones of Newark and Julie Lewis of Tulsa, Okla.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Pauline Durham of Fayettesville, Tenn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles R. Von Ins and John A. Jones; brother, Neil Spearman; and sister, Ethna Edwards.

Marian Pierson Broughton Byrnes

A memorial service for Marian Pierson Broughton Byrnes, 94, of Lakeland, Fla., will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville, with the Rev. Karen J. Chakoian officiating. A private graveside service will be held in Maple Grove Cemetery, Granville.
Mrs. Byrnes died Sept. 21, 2002, in Lakeland, Fla. She was born Oct. 12, 1907, in Frazeysburg, to the late Ernest and Pearl (Frazier) Pierson.
Mrs. Byrnes was a graduate of Granville High School and attended Denison University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Ross of Lakeland, Fla.; sons, Richard Broughton of Sebastopol, Calif., and Phillip Broughton of Asheville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and cousins, Carl A. Frazier of Granville and Dorothy F. Stuart of Manchester, Vt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold C. Broughton, who was a graduate of Denison University; and second husband, John W. Byrnes, formerly of Columbus.
The McPeek Funeral Home, Granville, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Paul Crump
CHICAGO (AP) -- Former death row inmate Paul Crump, whose novel "Burn, Killer, Burn," described a murderer who commits suicide to avoid being executed, has died.
Crump, 72, died at the Chester Mental Health Center, where he had been held since 2000 after being convicted of harassing a family member and violating an order of protection. Crump's sister, Gwendolyn Jones, said he died of pneumonia and lung cancer on Oct. 11. Crump served 39 years in prison for shooting to death a security guard during the robbery of a Chicago meatpacking plant in 1953. His four accomplices received prison sentences, but Crump was sentenced to die in the electric chair and escaped 15 dates with the executioner.
Josephine Stare Kreider

A Mass of Christian burial for Josephine Stare Kreider, 86, of Granville, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at St. Edward's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Kreider was born March 19, 1916, in Newark, to the late Frank L. Stare Sr. and Rhoda (Bucy) Stare.
She attended St. Francis de Sales schools and was a member of the parish for more than 50 years. After moving to Granville in 1978, she had been a member of the congregation of St. Edward the Confessor. She was an avid gardner, a member of the Granville Garden Club and Newark Garden Club. She was also an excellent bridge player, and was a Life Master for many years.
She is survived by her sons, Gary P. (Barbara) Kreider of Cincinnati and Thomas N. (Pamela) Kreider of Dillon Hills; daughter, Nancy Kreider Volk of Granville; three grandsons, Kenneth (Emily) Kreider of Cincinnati, David (Consuela) Kreider of Gainesville, Fla., and John C. (Becky) Volk II of Friday Harbor, Wash.; five granddaughters, Katy (Mark) Greifenkamp, Karen (James) Gaunt and Kimberly Kreider, all of Cincinnati, and Krista (Jay) Riblet of Elkhart, Ind., and Amy Kreider of Washington, D.C.; three stepgranddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth K. Kreider, in 1977; sister, Eve McCleary; and three brothers, Gerald Stare, Lawrence Stare and Frank L. Stare Jr.

William G. "Bill" Smith

A funeral service for William G. "Bill" Smith, 73, of Newark, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Imhoff officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, Glenford.
Mr. Smith, who retired in 1993 as an accountant for Diebold, died Oct. 16, 2002, at the LPN Nursing Facility. He was born Aug. 7, 1929, in Bremen, Ohio, to the late Ford and Freda (Lauderbaugh) Smith.
Mr. Smith had also been associated with Moore's Department Stores. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and Agape Sunday School Class. He was a 1946 graduate of Newark High School.
He is survived by his daughters, Linda D. and Harper F. Zarker of Vincentown, N.J., and Teresa "Terri" and Neil Snelling of Newark; sisters, Eileen Ashbaugh of Chillicothe, Marlene (Carl) Noland of Lancaster, Marilyn (Ken) Spangler of Reynoldsburg and Sharon (Gary) Miller of Dayton; brothers, Norman (Evelyn) Smith of Lancaster, Larry (Susan) Smith of Lancaster and Jerry (Vickie) Smith of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Tiffany Ann Zarker, Chelsea Alexis Zarker, Matthew Bryan Snelling and Allison Jean Snelling; aunt, Wanda Drumm of Newark; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Helen Smith; wife, Alice (Helser) Smith, who died on March 19, 1995; and brother-in-law, Arthur Ashbaugh.

Clara Z. Souslin

A funeral service for Clara Z. Souslin, 87, of Thornville, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Boring-Sheridan Funeral Home, with Pastor Gary Beatty officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Ridge Cemetery, Thornville.
Mrs. Souslin, a homemaker and former member of Zion United Church of Christ in Thornville, died Oct. 15, 2002, at Mount Carmel East, Columbus. She was born Nov. 27, 1914, in Baltimore, to the late Grover C. and Orleana D. (Hite) Blauser.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley A. (Dick C.) Herron of Lancaster; sons, Roger E. (Barbara) Souslin of Johnstown, Carl E. Souslin of Thornville and Larry L. (Beth A.) Souslin of Thornville; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sisters, Elsia Butler of Florida and Fawn Brinkley of Lancaster; sister-in-law, Emma Garey of Junction City; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. Souslin, who died on March 6, 1989; infant daughter, L. Marleen; sisters, Lucille Blauser and Anus Vinola Waits; and brothers, Saul, Byron, Grover and Joseph Blauser.
