Victor R. Batterson

Feb. 23, 1912-Nov. 6, 2002

A memorial service for Victor R. Batterson, 90, of Hebron, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Second Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Mitchell Van Metre officiating.

Mr. Batterson, who was a Navy veteran of World War II, died Nov. 6, 2002, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center of Hospice of Central Ohio. He was born Feb. 23, 1912, in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, to the late Rev. Frank J. and Janette R. (Russell) Batterson.

Mr. Batterson graduated from Ohio University and earned a master's degree from The Ohio State University. He taught music in Central Ohio for 33 years.

Mr. Batterson was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Land of Legend Barbershop Chorus, Licking County Retired Teachers Association and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, whom he married Dec. 28, 1946, Janice (Cochran) Batterson; nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church, 42 E. Church St., Newark.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, 1984 Coffman Road, Suite A, Newark.

Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service is assisting the family with the arrangements.

James E. Green

Nov. 7, 1936-Nov. 7, 2002

A funeral service for James E. Green, 66, of Newark, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Miriam Schreck officiating.

Mr. Green, who was a sales executive for Georgia Pacific, died Nov. 7, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was born Nov. 7, 1936, in Newark, to the late Harold Green and Marie Sites (Russel) Green.

Mr. Green was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and American Foundry Men's Society.

He is survived by his children, Tammy Lake, Tina (Jon) Triplett, Todd (Terry) Green and Tim (Jan) Green; grandchildren, Crystal and Nicole Lake, Chelsea, Tanner and Taylor David, Conner Triplett, Tasha, Whitny, Crae, Olivia, Beck and Cai Green, great-grandson, Zalery Ohler; special niece, Trisha Slay; sisters, Carolyn Mahan and Patricia Acord; stepbrother, Eugene Sites; mother-in-law, Wilma Slay; brother and sister-in-law, James and Sally Dailey; sister-in-law, Sue Weiland; and stepsister, Marianne Gill.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Eldon Slay; one stepbrother; and one stepsister.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and Hospice of Licking County.

Theresa C. Cost

Jan. 25, 1933-Nov. 7, 2002

A Mass of Christian burial for Theresa C. Cost, 69, of Newark, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Leonard Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Reis officiating.

Ms. Cost, who retired from the former Newark Air Force Base, died Nov. 7, 2002, at Licking Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 25, 1933, in Newark to the late Frederick W. and Mary (Ponser) Gebhart.

Ms. Cost also worked at Interim Healthcare and Central Intermediate School, where she was a cafeteria cashier.

She was a member of St. Leonard Catholic Church, the AFL-CIO, and was a bingo caller at Newark Healthcare Centre.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Bruce Cost of Hilliard, and Paul and Tammy Cost of Cincinnati; daughters, Christine Archer of Newark, and Georgianna Vanvelzor of Newark; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Maxine Gebhart of Newark; sisters and brother-in-law, Josephine Rubeck of Richwood, and Mary Rose and Albert Rubeck of Marion, Ursula Evans of Boone, Iowa, Dorothy Tanner of Newark, Florence Gebhart of Newark; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Gebhart.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Reed-Egan Funeral Home, 141 N. Green Wave Drive, Newark, where a vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

James Edward Myers

Nov. 7, 2002

A graveside service with rosary for James Edward Myers, 87, formerly of Newark, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Georgia.

Mr. Myers died Nov. 7, 2002, in Georgia. He is a native of Newark.

Mr. Myers moved to Savannah over 50 years ago and retired from the City of Savannah Water Works. He served in the Marines and was a member of the American Legion Post 184.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Beverly Myers of Savannah, and Edward and Caryl Myers of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Chris Myers of Savannah, Jill Vandergriff of Jacksonville, Fla., and Connie Ortega of Norfolk, Va.; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews in Newark.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Savannah Inc.

Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, of Savannah, is in charge of the arrangements.

Adrian M. Stapleton

Feb. 8, 1919-Nov. 5, 2002

A funeral service for Adrian M. Stapleton, 83, of Heath, was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Heath Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service, with the Rev. Gary Boggs officiating. Burial followed in Wilson Cemetery.

Mrs. Stapleton, a member of the Second Baptist Church on National Drive, died Nov. 5, 2002, at Licking Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 8, 1919, to the late Austin and Nancy (Berry) Wilson.

Mrs. Stapleton was primarily a homemaker. She had been the head waitress at Sparta Restaurant for many years.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Carol and Clyde Gant of Heath, Martha and Verl Salyer of Newark, Beverly and Jim Hayes of Newark, Paul and Barbara Stapleton of Heath, Jim and Louise Stapleton of Kentucky, Chris and Janet Stapleton of Buckeye Lake, Debbie and Sam Turner of Heath, Karen Stapleton of Heath, and Nicole Zahrndt of Heath; special grandson, Clyde Gant II of Heath; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; nephew, Dick Rittenhouse of Newark; special friend, Duane Zahrndt of Heath; and many loving sisters- and brothers-in-law.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman A. Stapleton, on Dec. 2, 1976; children, Nancy Hayes and Thurman E. Stapleton; and a sister, Bernice McPeek.

Thomas T. Triplett

Captain Thomas Terrence Triplett, USN (Ret.), 65, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Nov. 9, 2002, at a local hospital.

Mr. Triplett was born in 1937 in Kansas City, Kan., and attended St. Thomas Grade School in Ann Arbor, Mich., as well as St. Mary's Grade School and High School in Sandusky, Ohio. He was a 1955 graduate of Newark High School, and a 1969 graduate of Miami University, earning a B.A. degree in government. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity.

Mr. Triplett attended the U.S. Navy's Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., and was commissioned in March 1961. He served as Commanding Officer of USS Manitowoc (LST-1180) and USS Raleigh (LPD-1), and also as Commander, Amphibious Squadron Four on two separate occasions. Shore duty assignments include tours in Kodiak, Ark., Naples, Italy, Norfolk, Va., and two tours in the Pentagon on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, and a one year tour in Can Ranh Bay, Vietnam on the Staff of Coastal Wilhoite (DER 397) on Market Time Operations off South Vietnam, USS Macdonnough (DLG-8), USS Ponce (LPD-15), USS Truckee (AO-47), and on the Staff of Commander, Carrier Group Eight, serving aboard the carriers America, John F. Kennedy, and Nimitz. Captain Triplett retired in 1991 after more than 30 years of active service. Following his retirement, the Tripletts spent three years in Saudi Arabia while he worked as an instructor in the Royal Saudi Naval Forces Training Command in Jubail, Saudi Arabia.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Claudia Ann (Holeton) Triplett; two sons, Michael T. (Kim) Triplett of Powell, and Jonathan S. (Tina) Triplett of Newark; three sisters, Carole L. Stierhoff of Sandusky, Judith A. Richardson of Westerville, and Mary K. Peitz of Sylvania; two brothers, Stephen A. Triplett of New Philadelphia, and Newton W. Triplett of St. Mary's; grandson, Conner Thomas Triplett of Newark; three stepgrandchildren, Chelsea, Tanner and Taylor David of Newark; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Verne L. and Angela Triplett; mother-in-law, Sarah Holeton; and sister, Terry K. Davisson.

Mr. Triplett's body will be cremated with burial at sea at a later date.

Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach, Va., is in charge of arrangements.
