Hiram T. Bricker

Jan. 13, 1910-Dec. 6, 2002

A funeral service for Hiram T. Becker, 92, of Newark, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Hissong officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Bricker, who was a retire real estate broker, died Dec. 6, 2002, at LPN Nursing Home. He was born Jan. 13, 1910, in Utica, to the late James F. and Bertha (Biddison) Bricker.

Mr. Bricker was a member of the Northside Church of Christ, where he was a deacon for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Grace Bricker; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Michelle Bricker, Rod and Suezanne Brickerm and Frank Bricker, all of Newark; grandchildren, Matthew and Jenny Bricker of Newark; brother, William Bricker of Utica; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Bessie, Dorothea and Virginia.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark.

Forest Leroy Edwards

Nov. 19, 1937-Dec. 5, 2002

A funeral service for Forest Leroy Edwards, 65, of Sunbury, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Crouse-Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Calvin Alexander officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Edwards, who retired as a Chief Machinist Mate of the U.S. Navy, died Dec. 5, 2002, at St. Ann's Hospital. He was born Nov. 19, 1937, in Condit, to the late Earl and Dora (Bailey) Edwards.

He is survived by his wife, Opal (Berridge) Edwards; five sons, Thomas Vinton (Michelle) Edwards of California, John William Edwards of Arkansas, James Leroy (Angie) Edwards of Virginia, David Rondall Edwards of Ohio, and George Vern Edwards of Virginia.; one daughter, Carla Janine Vaughn of Georgia; and seven grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 225 N. Main St., Johnstown.

Macille Mowery Heard

May 7, 1918-Dec. 6, 2002

A funeral service for Macille Mowery Heard, 84, of White Stone, Va., formerly of Newark, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock, Va. A private burial will follow.

Mrs. Mowery died Dec. 6, 2002. She was born May 7, 1918.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Sanford K. and Susan Heard of Culpeper, Va., James C. and Nancy Heard of Basalt, Colo., and Jonathan and Judy Heard of Alexandria, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Susan H. and Harry S. Ferguson of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.

Christopher P. Middy

April 24, 1916-Dec. 5, 2002

A funeral service for Christopher P. Middy, 86, of West Lafayette, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Given-Dawson Funeral Home, Coshocton, with the Rev. Dr. John Fields officiating. Burial will follow in South Lawn Cemetery where the Coshocton County Veterans Council will hold special services.

Mr. Middy, a retired mill wright at Lower paper mill, died Dec. 5, 2002, at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster. He was born April 24, 1916, in Coshocton, to the late James Ernest and Edith (Rice) Middy.

Mr. Middy was a member of the Coshocton Elks Lodge No. 376, the American Legion No. 65, the V.F.W. Lodge 1330, the Coshocton Masonic Lodge No. 96, the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus and the Aladdin Shrine Temple of Columbus.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from April 3, 1942 to Jan. 25, 1946 in Burma.

He is survived by his nephews, Donald Guilliams of Oregon, James Guilliams of Newark, Carlos Guilliams of Lucasville, William Guilliams of Pennsylvania, Phillip Guilliams of Florida, Gail Middy of California and Christopher Middy of Zanesville; and nieces, Barbara Kent of Massachusetts, Edith Fields, of Newark, Sharon Aronhalt of Coshocton and Linda Hina of Zanesville.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Earnestine Middy Guilliams, and brothers, Gail and James Middy.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 86 Park Ave., Coshocton.

James F. Sasser Sr.

Dec. 9, 1936-Dec. 7, 2002

A funeral service for James F. Sasser Sr., 65, of Cambridge, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Cambridge, with Father Robert Boyer officiating. Burial will follow in Guernsey Memory Gardens.

Mr. Sasser, who was an R.C.A. coal miner and retired from United Technologies, died Dec. 7, 2002, at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. He was born Dec. 9, 1936, in Newark, to the late Fredrick James Sasser and Rebecca Pletcher Sasser Irvine.

Mr. Sasser was a member of the Cambridge Eagles Club No. 386, where he was Father of the Year, the Cambridge Moose Lodge and St. Benedict Catholic Church. He also retired from the National Guard after 32 years.

He is survived by his wife, Sophia K. Shinoski Sasser, whom he married May 12, 1963; daughters and sons-in-law, Irene and Tim Tidball, Rebecca and Jerry Miller and Sheila Green, all of Cambridge, and Lisa and Martin Lucas of Newnan, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Betty Yemich of Cambridge, James Sasser Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and Tim and Becky Sasser of Byesville; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Weber of Tennessee and Carol (Woody) Lowe of Cambridge; and brother, Charles (Karen) Sasser of Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Bundy-Law Funeral Home, Cambridge, where the Eagles will hold a ceremony at 7 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Benedict Catholic Church or Guernsey County Cancer Society.

George B. Loper

Oct. 28, 1917-Dec. 7, 2002

Gravesides services for George B. Loper, 85, of Newark, will be held at a later date.

Mr. Loper, who worked at the Newark Air Force base, died Dec. 7, 2002, at Newark Healthcare Centre. He was born Oct. 28, 1917, in Barnesville, to the late George and Leska (Golt) Loper.

Mr. Loper was an Air Force veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Frances L. (Wiseman) Loper; sons and daughters-in-law, George B. and Karen Loper of Johnstown, Ron Loper and James and Laurie Loper, all of Newark; grandchildren, Shawn Loper of Johnstown and Aaron (Denise) Loper of Gambier.

He was preceded in death by his brother and two sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Associations, Ohio Valley Affiliate, P.O. Box 182039, Dept. 013, Columbus, OH 43218-2039.

Earl W. Smith

Aug. 16, 1924-Dec. 7, 2002

A funeral service for Earl W. Smith, 78, of Newark and formerly of Killbuck, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Alexander Nursing Home, Millersburg, with the Rev. Bruce Hissong officiating. Burial will follow in Killbuck Cemetery with military rites by the Killbuck V.F.W.

Mr. Smith, who worked for Western and Southern Life Insurance for 29 years, died Dec. 7, 2002, at Heath Nursing Home following an extended illness. He was born Aug. 16, 1924, in Holmes County to the late Bernard C. and Eva L. (Arnold) Smith.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Northside Church of Christ, the Millersburg Spartan Lodge 126 F. and A.M. and the Penn Ohio Model A Ford Club. He was a founder of the Newark Vibrators Model A Ford Club.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 8th Air Force and was a past member of the Killbuck V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martha L. Proper, whom he married on March 15, 1946; daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and James Rosser of Newark; son and daughter-in-law, Myron and Janet Smith of Canton, N.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio.

Helen L. Swope

Dec. 4, 2002

A funeral service for Helen L. Swope, 87, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Oak Creek United Church of Church. Burial will follow in Miami Valley Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Swope died Dec. 4, 2002, at Kettering Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Harold Swope; sons, Thomas (Theresa) Swope and Robert (Marsha) Swope; grandchildren, Molly, Jessica and Heather Swope, Charles and Katie Waldren and Marie Borek; and many relatives and friends.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, prior to the service at the church, 5280 Bigger Road.
