A funeral service for Betty Jane Kerr, 75, of Gambier, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Law-Baker Funeral Home, with Bruce Hissong officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Kerr, a member of Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene, died Aug. 6, 2003, at Knox Community Hospital. She was born Feb. 9, 1928, in Bellevue, to the late Ralph C. and Minerva J. (Arnold) Carlock.
She is survived by her husband, William E. Kerr; son, Ronald Wilson of Mount Vernon; and daughters and sons-in-law, Luanne and Richard Bryant of Mount Vernon, and Diane Sue and Ron Hoeflich of Gambier.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother; and two sisters.

Velma C. Cooperrider

A funeral service for Velma C. Cooperrider, 98, of Thornville, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Boring-Sheridan Funeral Home, with Pastor Jeff Morlock officiating. Burial will follow in Lutheran Reformed Cemetery, Thornville.
Mrs. Cooperrider, who taught piano lessons, died Aug. 5, 2003, at Somerset Healthcare in Somerset. She was born Aug. 1, 1905, in Millersport, to the late Judd and Flora (Phillips) Grove.
Mrs. Cooperrider graduated from Thornville High School and Capital University Conservatory of Music in 1928. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Thornville, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was church organist.
Mrs. Cooperrider was a former Girl Scout leader and had Girl Scout Day Camp on her farm. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau.
She is survived by her sons, Jesse J. (Lurinda) Cooperrider of Newark, Frank G. Cooperrider of Thornville, and Robert E. (Kathy) Cooperrider of Thornville; daughter, Lou Edith Helsel of Newark; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary C. Grove of Millersport.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Virgil Cooperrider, in 1967; children, Raymond and David; and sister, Vera Shelly.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 56 S. Main St., Thornville.

Jay M. (Jack) Grimes

A funeral service will be held for Jay M. (Jack) Grimes, 86, of Hopewell, at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Eric Grimes officiating. Burial will follow at Poplar Fork Cemetery near Gratiot.
Mr. Grimes, who was born Aug. 12, 1916, in Rix Mills to the late Homer and Lucy West Grimes, died Aug. 8, 2003, at his residence in Hopewell.
A retired farmer, Mr. Grimes also worked on the assembly line at Rockwell International in Newark and was a member of the Hopewell Free Methodist Church.
Mr. Grimes is survived by wife Lena E. Sickle Grimes; three daughters and sons-in-law, Myrna and Wayne Sidle of Newark, Marie and Jerry Littlejohn of Leesburg, Fla., and Rita and Roy Carpenter of Hopewell; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jay P. and Sharon Grimes of Baltimore, and Dale and Karen Grimes of Newark; three sisters, Doris Miller of Newark, Marjorie Faith Ernst of Florida, and Winnie Greulich of Newark; three brothers, Joe Grimes of West Virginia, Don Grimes of Illinois, and Dan Grimes of Newark; 15 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Mr. Grimes was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Sidle and Thelma Browning.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday until the service at Bolin Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville.

Mary Ellen Buckingham

A graveside service for Mary Ellen Buckingham, 81, of Dayton, will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Rev. Tom Myers officiating.
Ms. Buckingham, who was born Dec. 30. 1921, in Newark, to the late James E. and Florence (Ponser) Buckingham, died Aug. 8, 2003, at Dayton VA Hospital.
Raised in Hanover and a graduate of Hanover High School, Miss Buckingham served in the Waves in San Francisco during World War II and worked as a teletypist in the Hawaiian Islands. She attended Hanover Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth Ann and James Clark of Newark, Doris L. and Harold Carroll of Newark; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Wilma Buckingham of Bladensburg, and John and Maxine Buckingham of Newark; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, James Bradford Buckingham.

James W. Wright

A funeral service for James W. Wright, 92, of Newark, will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Newark Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service with Rev. William Rauch officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Wright, who was born Feb. 26, 1911, in Licking County, to the late James Raymond and Effel (Benner) Wright, died Aug. 7, 2003, at home.
Mr. Wright was a graduate of Newark High School and Denison University, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from the Heath Refinery, where he worked as a chemist and supervisor.
He was a member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, the Newark Elks and enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golf.
Mr. Wright is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Carol Lee and Ron Stephan of Shorewood, Ill.; sons and daughters-in-law, James F. and Mary Wright of Glenford, Allen and Sandy Wright of California; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, Robert and Nancy Wright of Newark, Harold Wright of Newark; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Ann and David Dane of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wright was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Frances Slanker, Martha Grace Miller and Jean Porzack.

John Thomas Hupp

A funeral service for John Thomas Hupp, 58, of Newark, will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Robert L. Knox officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Chapel Cemetery
Mr. Hupp, who was born March 6, 1945, in Newark, to the late John Otis Hupp and Mary Agnes Henzey and died Aug. 8, 2003, at the Selma Markowitz Hospice Care Center.
Mr. Hupp served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, was a member of American Legion Post No. 85, Newark Eagles and Newark Druids. He was a laborer with Tectum Inc.
Mr. Hupp is survived by sister, Mary Jane Hollar of Newark; grandson, J.P. Sellars of Newark; adopted daughter, Julie Show of Newark; stepdaughter, Patty Anderson of Newark; and special friend, Ruth E. Hupp of Heath.
Calling hours are from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 179 Granville St. Licking County Veteran's Alliance will provide military honors at the committal service.

Verla Swain Harris

A funeral service for Verla Swain Harris, 79, of Zanesville, will be held 1 p.m. Monday at The Snouffer Funeral Home with Rev. Joy French officiating. Burial will follow in Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.
Verla Swain Harris, who was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Cannelville, to the late Lester and Mamie Cartwright Carr, died Aug. 9, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Harris, who retired from Essex Wire (United Technologies) as a supervisor, was a member of South Zanesville United Methodist Church and an avid golfer, belonging to the Jaycee's Thursday evening women's league.
Mrs. Harris is survived by husband, Gene Harris; son, Michael (Karole) Swain of Elyria; daughter, Jo Lynn (Richard) Torbert of Hanover; stepson, Larry Harris of Dayton; brothers, Chalmer (Nancy) Carr of Plymouth, and Russell (Nancy) Carr of Roseville; sisters, Pearl (Howard) Anders of Roseville, Edna Maxwell of Zanesville, Mildred Sidwell of McConnelsville, and Mary (Bill) Rider of Zanesville; grandchildren, Todd (Michelle) Torbert of Hanover, Rodd (Krisi) Torbert of Avon; Bart (Maureen) Swain of Rocky River, and Deborah (Bill) Weaver of Pittsburgh, Pa.; stepgrandchildren, Doug Harris of Ashville, N.C., and Debbie Harris of Dayton; great-grandchildren, Callie and Cade Torbert of Hanover, Zackary, Max and Ashley Torbert of Avon, Lain Weaver of Pittsburgh, Pa; and special friend, Bo Coconis of Zanesville.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Swain, who died in 1974, and a sister, Elsie Fisher.

A funeral service for Gerald W. Humphreys, 65, of Pataskala, will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Kauber-Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Lloyd Markley officiating. Burial will follow in Pataskala Cemetery.
Gerald W. Humphreys died Aug. 8, 2003, at Riverside Hospital.
An Air Force veteran having served in Korea, Mr. Humphreys was a lifetime member of the DAV, a member of the Christian Bible Fellowship in Alexandria and had retired from DCSC.
Mr. Humphreys is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sheila C. Humphreys; children, Brian (Sharon) Humphreys of Dryden, N.Y.; Amy Humphreys of Reynoldsburg; father, Clarence E. Humphreys of Hillsboro; brother, Larry (Marilyn) Humphreys of Avon Lake; grandchildren, Brittany and Nicholas Humphreys.
Mr. Humphreys is preceded in death by his mother, Mabel L. Davis.
