Sidney Eugene Cooley

A funeral service for Sidney Eugene Cooley, 75, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Pataskala, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Kauber-Miller Funeral Home, Pataskala, with the Rev. Alan Sprenger officiating. Burial will follow in Pataskala Cemetery.
Mr. Cooley, who served in the Army from 1944 to 1948, died Aug. 21, 2003, at his residence. He was born Oct. 26, 1927, in Clendenin, W.Va., to the late Sidney B. and Thelmer L. Cooley.
Mr. Cooley was an electronic technician, electric installer and janitor for North American Rockwell from 1952 to 1986.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Patricia (Rice) Cooley; daughter, Susan (Bill) Bible; grandson, Brian R. Francis; brothers, Ronald (Cora Sue) Cooley and Kenneth (Janice) Cooley; sisters, Marcelene Smith, Dolores "Tiny" (Joseph) Gessell and Joann (Max) Gibson; brother-in-law, Roland Plant; sister-in-law, Marsha Cooley.
He will be greatly missed by his family, especially Brian, and friends, Nancy and Bill McCarthy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Plant, and brother, Arlen Cooley.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 289 S. Main St. Pataskala.
James V. Huffman
May 21, 1938-Aug. 23, 2003
A funeral service for James V. Huffman, 65, formerly of Columbus, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bob Knox officiating.
Mr. Huffman died Aug. 23, 2003, at his residence in Somerset.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service at the funeral home, 179 Granville St., Newark.
Ann Oakes
Jan. 19, 1918-Aug. 20, 2003
A memorial service for Ann "Anniegram" (Lantz) Oakes, 85, formerly of Granville, will be held when she is inurned with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
Mrs. Oakes died Aug. 20, 2003, in Seattle. She was born Jan. 19, 1918, in Wooster, to the late Minnie Smucker and P.R. Lantz.
Mrs. Oakes was a graduate of the College of Swedish Massage in New York City, Gemological Institute of New York, Ohio Association of Realtors and The Learn to Read Tutoring Program.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Columbus and served in all capacities as a member of the Scioto County Women's Medical Auxiliary. While living in Columbus, she worked at Hawk's Jewelry and was a docent for the Columbus Museum of Fine Arts. She was also involved with the International Host Family Program at Ohio State and continued the program at Denison.
Moving to Granville in 1986, she was a member of the Land Conservancy and organized the River Roundup of the Little Raccoon Creek. She served as president of the Licking County Medical Auxiliary, was a board member of Family Services and a volunteer at the hospital Twig gift shop. She tutored elementary students in reading and students at the Licking County Joint Vocational School. She was also a house mother for the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at Denison University for much of her time in Granville.
She was a well-known story teller and a member of the Central Ohio Story Telling Association Inc. She was best known for her tape of the Diamond Necklace story and lectures and slides of famous gems of the world. She was a gemologist lecturer on the Princess Cunnard.
She was an avid traveler, dedicated activist for the protection of abused elderly and was appointed to the Governor's Senior Protective Initiative Task Force.
She is survived by her sons, and daughters-in-law, John C. (Maria) Oakes of Ironton, Jeffrey (Deborah) Oakes of Columbus, Ind., and Elizabeth Oakes of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, Suzann L. (Douglas) Anderson of Seattle; grandchildren, Clea M. (Noel) Fisher of Australia, Melina L. (Shawn) Tackitt of Phoenix, John C. Oakes and Laura S. Oakes of Ironton, Annaleise M. (Kelly) Kuhns, Jeffrey L. Oakes II and Alden C. Oakes of Columbus, Ind., and Jarrod M. Roberts and Benjamin Roberts of Seattle; two great-grandchildren, Riley A. Fisher and Aaron A. Tackitt; and brother-in-law, Alfred (Linda) Oakes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Alden B. Oakes, the first orthopedic surgeon in Portsmouth, where the couple lived for many years. She was also preceded in death by her oldest son, Alden B. Oakes Jr.; and grandson, Leon A. Oakes.

Geraldine M. Reed

A funeral service for Geraldine M. Reed, 79, of Johnstown, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Crouse-Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Drew Walther officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Columbus.
Mrs. Reed died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Crestview Manor Nursing Home, Lancaster. She was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Columbus, to the late Dayton D. and Ida Hansel Clark.
She was a lifetime member of Reynoldsburg American Legion.
She is survived by a son, Larry E. (Linda) Mattes of Johnstown; a daughter, Elsie M. (Harry) Lisk of Lancaster; adopted son, George Gaumer II of Wheeling, W.Va.; three stepchildren; Kay, Eddie and Fred Reed; six grandchildren, James, Thomas and Timothy Tucker, Toni Lynn (Paul) Grice, Larry Eugene Mattes II and Kimberly Ann Dick; 10 stepgrandchildren, Merrilee Shumaucher, Todd Lisk, Wendy D'Angelo, Brian Lisk, Rhonda L. Caudill, Mary S. Micheals, Amy Kane, Lisa Taylor, Kathy Amerine and Cindy Hammel; 36 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband, Ed Reed; three grandchildren, Daniel G. Tucker, Joe Caudill III and Brian Lee Caudill.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the funeral home, 225 N. Main St., Johnstown.

John E. Ward

A funeral service for John E. Ward, 13, of Newark, will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Bladensburg Church of Christ, with Major Ronald DeMichael, Major Diana DeMichael and Father Ronald Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Bladensburg Cemetery.
John died Aug. 23, 2003, at Children's Hospital in Columbus. He was born June 6, 1990, in Mount Vernon, to Craig and Lisa (McIlvoy) Ward of Newark.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandmother, Lodema Ward of Bladensburg; grandparents, Larry and Vivian Bush of Mount Vernon; grandparents, Neil and Debbie McIlvoy of Mount Vernon; aunt and uncle, Linda and Tony Mickley of Danville; and foster parents, Marlene and Jerry Powers.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Arthur C. Ward; grandmother, Betsy Bush; and uncles, Sam Ward, Robert McIlvoy and Troy McIlvoy.

Stella 'Ted' Moreland

A funeral service for Stella "Ted" Moreland, 87, of Pataskala, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Kauber-Miller Funeral Home, with the Dr. Rev. Walter Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow in Pataskala Cemetery.
Stella passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003.
Stella was an avid euchre player, member of Summit Seniors and Bowling Group. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved gardening, her flowers, and everyone enjoyed her delicious pies and Thanksgiving dinners for 87 years. She retired from Sears Eastland after 20 years.
Stella was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon C. "Jake" Moreland.
She is survived by her three children, daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Jerry Schmidt, son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Judy Moreland, son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Brenda Moreland; six grandchildren, David (Bert) Schmidt, Martha (Justin) Hammond, Lisa Moore, Tim Moreland, Anne (Ron) Moreland and Patricia (Bill) Hibbert; nieces, Marjorie Moreland and Ida Ruth Faust; 11 great-grandchildren, Tyler and Brett Hammond, Jacob Moore, Jake and Adam Schmidt, Branden, Clayten and Masen Hibbert, Emily, Grace and Nathan Moreland; four stepgrandchildren, Greg Ratliff, Lisa (Rich) Frey, Becky (Chris) Spangler and Julie Ratliff; six stepgreat-grandchildren, Savannah and Austin Spangler, Jordan and Ricky Frey, Jacqueline Ratliff and Haiden Ratliff.

Henrietta E. Robertson Good
Nov. 11,1926-Aug. 25, 2003
A memorial service for Henrietta E. Robertson Good, 76, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Chapel.
Henrietta was born Nov. 11, 1926, to the late Benjamin F. and Ruth Green Robertson in Newark. She was a lifelong member of Trinity AME Church, where she served as superintendent of Sunday School for four years.
Henrietta graduated from Newark Senior High School with the class of 1944. She was formerly employed as a medical assistant in the office of A.S. Burton, M.D. While working there, she joined the Licking County Medical Assistants Association, where she served as president, secretary and treasurer. She also was employed at Kline's Dept. Store in Newark before moving to Los Angeles, Calif. In California she worked for First Interstate Services Company for eight years.
Upon returning to Newark in 1989, she was employed for 11 years at the Newark Public Library, where she retired in October, 2000.
Some of Henrietta's favorite things included: a love of books, sports, word puzzles, bird watching, ABC soap operas, poker with friends at Sharon Glen, Paris, lemon pie, jelly beans, the daily three 2-8-4 and times spent with family and friends. So anytime any of the above is included in your life, think of Henrietta.
She is survived by daughters, Sheila Berry of Culver City, Calif., daughter and son-in-law, Gloria Berry and Edward Henson of Los Angeles, Calif., and Jeri Good of Los Angeles, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and James McMullens of Newark; sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Bob Bayless of Canton, Ga.; brother, Carl D. Robertson of Newark, Calif.; grandson, Travis R. Berry of Culver City, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Benjamin G. and Franklin Blair Robertson; and sister Mamie H. Robertson.
Her daughters would like to thank all the family, friends and caregivers who were always there for their mother.
There will be no visitation. A family and friends gathering will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at Sharon Glyn Village, 914 Sharon Valley Road.
William B. Shumate
Aug. 11, 1930-Aug. 27, 2003
A funeral service for William B. Shumate, 73, of Medway, Ohio, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, with Pastor Paul Hansen officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery.
Mr. Shumate, a retired truck driver, died Aug. 27, 2003, at his son's residence. He was born Aug. 11, 1930, in Oakhill, Ohio, to the late Frank and Verna Shumate.
William is survived by his sons, David Lee Shumate of Columbus, John (Jamie) Shumate of Newark, Michael A. Shumate of Columbus and Steven (Pam) Shumate of Cartersville, Ga., as well as, John and Francella Ratliff of Bryant, Ark.; brother, John Roger (Carolyn) Shumate of Kettlersville; sisters, Betty Kelly of Pamona, Calif., and Leatha (Charles) McCoy of Kentucky; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shumate is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis Shumate, who passed away in 1999, along with a brother, Dan from Oregon.
Mr. Shumate grew up in Jackson, Ohio and moved to Luray, Ohio where he lived with his wife and four children. He was a mason and enjoyed airplanes. He worked for B & L Motorfreight, before moving on to Dayton where he worked for the General Motors Plant out of Morraine. After his retirement, William and his wife Phyllis spent the winters out west in California and Arizona.
