James O. Dever
Dec. 25, 1920-July 10, 2002

A Mass of Christian Burial for James O. Dever, 81, of Johnstown, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Church of the Ascension, 276 S. Main St., Johnstown, with Father Richard Metzger officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Dever, who retired after 43 years with Curtis-Wright, North American Aviation and Rockwell International in Columbus, died July 10, 2002, at Flint Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Newark. He was born Dec. 25, 1920, in Columbus, to the late Oria and Clara Theado Dever.

Mr. Dever served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Dever of Johnstown; sons, James M. Dever of Newark and David (Monica) Dever of Johnstown; sisters Evelyn Gassman and Marion Barnhill, both of Columbus; grandchildren, Nicole, Courtney and Caitlyn Dever; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Delores Whitaker.

Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Crouse-Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home, 225 N. Main St., Johnstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Ascension.

Frances C. Shupe
Aug. 7, 1923-July 11, 2002

A funeral service for Frances C. Shupe, 78, of Heath, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Newark Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service with the Rev. Ron Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery.

Mrs. Shupe, who was a 1941 graduate of Newark High School, died July 11, 2002, at Heath Nursing Care Center. She was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Newark, to the late Ben E. and Elsie Pearl (Anderson) Swan.

Mrs. Shupe was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ.

She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Beth and Jeff Sheets of Heath and Christine Shupe of Newark; and grandsons, Ethan and Evan Sheets.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert J. Shupe, on Feb. 8, 2001; brother, Emerson Ward Swan; and sister, Mary Alverda (Swan) Alexander.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, 59 N. 5th St.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, 1984-A Coffman Road, Newark.

Donald S. Elliot
July 4, 2002

Funeral arrangements are incomplete for Donald S. Elliot, 69, of Detroit, who died July 4, 2002.

Richard O. Kruger
Nov. 14, 1946-July 12, 2002

A graveside service for Richard O. Kruger, 55, of Newark, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Knox officiating.

Mr. Kruger, who delivered furniture, died July 12, 2002, at Licking Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 14, 1946, in Newark, to the late Roy R. and Peggy B. (Keim) Kruger.

Mr. Kruger had a love of wrestling, bowling and working on cars.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Linda S. (McClain) Kruger; son, Richard A. (Christine) Kruger; three daughters, Peggy S. Kruger, Donna J. (Paul) James and Melissa K. Kruger; brother, Roy H. (Michele) Kruger; sister, Lois F. (Daniel) Swonger; and three grandchildren, Ricky, Tiffany and Brandon.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Chapel, 179 Granville St., Newark.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Timothy Ratchen
Nov. 17, 1922-July 14, 2002

A Mass of Christian burial for Timothy Ratchen, 79, of Newark, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with the Rev. Dean Mathewson officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Mr. Ratchen, a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, died July 14, 2002, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center of Hospice of Central Ohio. He was born Nov. 17, 1922, in Newark, to the late Harry P. and Miriam (Fitzpatrick) Ratchen.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Rita Ratchen of Tiffin, Ohio; three nieces; one nephew; and special family friends, Patty and David Gaul, and A.J. Gaul and Patrick Gaul.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Patrick Ratchen.

Reed-Egan Funeral Home, Newark, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials can be made to Hospice of Central Ohio.

Adelaide Holl Wesson
Dec. 9, 1910-June 26, 2002

A memorial service for Adelaide Holl Wesson, 91, of Granville, formerly of Worthington, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Granville.

Mrs. Wesson, a retired editor for the Western Publishing Company in New York City and author of 61 children's books, died June 26, 2002, at Licking Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Bev Holl of Oroville, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Joe Veffer of Amanda; grandsons, Steve and Randy Veffer; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Donald and Pat Hinkle; nephew, Scott Hinkle; and nieces, Lynne Goodman and Kiera Hinkle.

The McPeek Funeral Home, Granville, is in charge of arrangements.

Wilma M. Alrutz
Nov. 15, 1920-July 14, 2002

A memorial service for Wilma M. Alrutz, 81, of Centerville, formerly of Granville, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Swasey Chapel at Denison University in Granville with the Rev. William D. Merrell, former minister of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Granville, officiating. A private graveside service will be held at the College Cemetery at Denison University.

Mrs. Alrutz, a retired secretary in the Office of Financial Aid at Denison University and a typist for numerous professors, died July 14, 2002, at the Bethany Lutheran Village in Centerville, where she had resided following a serious River Road/Ohio 16 automobile accident in April of 2000. She was born Nov. 15, 1920, in Rockford, Ill., to the late Frank and Olga (Braun) Schmoock.

Mrs. Alrutz enthusiastically served others throughout her life, as her life was centered on God and was a mission to glorify Him. The true legacy of this unique and talented woman endures in the lives of all of us whom she touched.

As a charter member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church, she served as its secretary for more than 40 years, as well as in positions of Sunday school teacher, Deaconess of Education, and choir member.

Mrs. Alrutz was also a charter member and former secretary of the Granville Fellowship, Inc., and a member of the League of Women Voters, Licking Memorial Hospital TWIG 6 (Thrift Shop), and the Village Voices.

She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Calhoun; son-in-law, Dean Kocian; grandchildren, Mark, Brian and Sara; brother-in-law, Walter Weiss; and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Robert W. Alrutz, who died Oct. 14, 1997; and her younger sister, Ramona Weiss.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the McPeek Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville.

Daniel C. McGinnis Jr.
May 20, 1917-July 14, 2002

A funeral service for Daniel C. McGinnis Jr., 85, of Newark, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Knox officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens.

Mr. McGinnis, a postal clerk for 30 years at the U.S. Post Office, died July 14, 2002, at his residence. He was born May 20, 1917, in Central City, Ohio, to the late Daniel and Harriet (Moose) McGinnis.

Mr. McGinnis served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine McGinnis; sons, Daniel (Priscilla) McGinnis III of Prescott, Ariz., and Craig McGinnis of Newark; daughter, Rita (Kerry) Illes of Medina; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Myers of Shelby; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Frank; and sister, Mary.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete for Guy V. Crist, 73, of Somerset Healthcare Center, formerly of Glenford, who died July 15, 2002, at the care center.
