Paul G. Prior

A graveside service for Paul G. Prior, 77, of Pismo Beach, Calif., formerly of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville, with the Rev. Deborah Trimpe officiating.
Mr. Prior, a retired engineer for the Chevrolet Division of General Motors in Warren, Mich., died March 9, 2003, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was born July 21, 1925, in Columbus to the late Graham and Marie (Rogers) Prior.
Mr. Prior was a graduate of Columbus West High School and attended The Ohio State University. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a flight engineer on a Lockheed Loadstar.
Surviving are his wife, Gail C. Prior; daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Patrick McCusker of Waterford, Mich.; son, Herb Kolodsick of Bakersfield, Calif.; daughter, Kristin Kolodsick of Pismo Beach, Calif.; and brother and sister-in-law, Stanton and Charlotte Prior of Columbus.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jo Ann (White) Prior, and son, David Prior.

Mary A. Esworthy
April 27, 1923-Sept. 8, 2003
A funeral service for Mary A. Esworthy, 80, of Newark, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Newark Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service, with Pastor Bob Callender and Pastor Jim Young officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Esworthy, a graduate of Jacksontown High School, died Sept. 8, 2003, at the Selma Markowitz Care Center of Hospice of Central Ohio. She was born April 27, 1923, in Newark, to the late Clarence and Ida (Main) Adamson.
Mrs. Esworthy was a member of Central Christian Church, where she had been a member of the church choir for several years. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and at one time had been a member of the Licking County Genealogical Society. She bowled for 25 years with the North Newark Women's League.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Willard Wheeler of Nashport, and Sandy and Bill Rissler of Newark; granddaughter, Kelly (Michael) Pethtel of Newark; great-granddaughter, Jenna Pethtel of Newark; sister, Lucille Hoskinson of Hanover; four nephews; one niece; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne M. Esworthy, on Dec. 12, 1998; and by a brother, Ray Adamson.

David W. Smith
Nov. 7, 1947-Sept. 8, 2003
A funeral service for David W. Smith, 55, of Columbus, formerly of Newark, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Clyde Brooks Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Arndt officiating. A committal service and interment will follow in the Mount Nebo Cemetery, Saltlick Township, Pa.
Mr. Smith died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at his home. He was born Nov. 7, 1947, in Connellsville, Pa., son of William and Meredith (Blackburn) Smith of Ligonier.
David had been a resident of Ohio for the last 28 years. He spent 20 years in Newark, and Columbus for the last eight years. He was a graduate of the Ligonier Valley Senior High School with the class of 1965, and the Control Data Institute in 1973.
David worked as a computer technician for the Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of the Natinal Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was a member of the Heath Lions Club in Heath.
David is survived by his two loving daughters, Susan Sparks and her husband Rodney of Galion, and Kristine Maier and her husband James of Newark; his grandchildren, Daniel, Matthew and Andrew Sparks, and Jacob Maier; three sisters, Nancy Cerkebile and her husband Terry, Kathy Lukatch and her husband Jim, and Karen Smith, all of Ligonier; and a brother, Allen Smith of Ligonier.
David was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria A. (Horner) Smith, on Aug. 29, 2003.

Betty Marie Snider
March 30, 1930-Sept. 8, 2003
A funeral service for Betty Marie Snider, 73, of Somerset, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bope-Thomas Funeral Home, with Pastor Brian Priest officiating. Burial will follow in Hanover Cemetery.
Betty, a graduate of The Ohio State University, died Monday morning, Sept. 8, 2003, at her residence. She was born March 30, 1930, in Licking County, the daughter of the late Irwin C. and Mabel A. (Crawmer) Priest.
Betty was a Title One school teacher at Somerset Elementary. She was a volunteer docent at Dawes Arboretum and was a former council woman. She was co-founder and owner/operator of the Clay Haus Restaurant in Somerset.
Surviving are three daughters, Brenda and Eric Riffle of Somerset, Carla and Richard Liss of Columbus, and Michal and Alan Schultice of Thornville; three sons, Doug Snider of Junction City, Scott Snider of Somerset, and Bret Snider of the home; seven grandchildren, Greg and Chris Riffle, Jason Snider, Amanda and Michael Hill, Elizabeth Liss and Katlin Schultice; and one sister, Mrs. George (Kathleen) Morgan of Newark.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Carl G. Snider (Jan. 13. 1992); two brothers, Kenneth and Earl Priest; a granddaughter, Angela Snider (1984); and a daughter-in-law, Debra Snider (2000).

Marie Simmons
July 28, 1936-Aug. 23, 2003
A funeral service for Marie Simmons was held on Aug. 29 at her home on the island of Bermuda.
Marie Simmons was the wife of the Rev. Erskine Simmons; they came to Newark as Pastor of Trinity A.M.E. Church, 64 E. Church St., Newark, in 1996. They returned to Bermuda in 1998.
While in Newark, Marie was active in Church Women United and foster child care. She was a member of Nimble Thimble federated women's club, and also taught at the Par Excellence School for at-risk children.
In 1998, after major surgery for breast cancer, the Rev. and Marie Simmons returned to their home in St. George Bermuda until her passing.
Carolyn L. Allen
Feb. 27, 1928-Sept. 9, 2003
A funeral service for Carolyn L. Allen, 75, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Chester Sidle officiating. Burial will be held at Brushy Fork Cemetery.
Mrs. Allen died Tuesday, Sept 9, 2003, at her residence. She was born on Feb. 27, 1928, in Chillicothe, to the late William Harold and Dora Emma (Chalfant) Pinkerton.
She retired from Licking Memorial Hospital in 1980 as an LPN with 22 years of service.
Mrs. Allen was a member of the Owens-Corning Campers Club. She was a wonderful, loving mother and grandmother.
She is survived by four daughters, Emma M. (Jim) Smith of Newark, Cindy S. (Jim) Butler of Newark, Diane (Ken) Shumaker of Newark, and Paula D. (Jim) Grant of St. Louisville; two sons, Robert E. (Theresa ) Allen of Granville, and Bill (Mel) Allen of St. Lousiville; one sister, Phyllis (Wayne) Troyer of Indiana; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald R. "Dick" Allen, whom she married Sept. 19, 1947; and one brother, Charles William Pinkerton

Florence E. Caldwell
June 30, 1941-Sept. 13, 2003
A funeral service for Florence E. Caldwell, 62, will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Kauber-Miller Funeral Home in Pataskala. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Glen Rest Memorial Estate.
Florence was born in London, Ohio, on June 30, 1941, to Thomas and Anna Mae Howard Hall. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Peyton Almond Sr., in the Blanche Addition section of Pataskala. She married Nathan Caldwell in 1969, and they raised four children. Florence is a former employee of the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services.
Florence Caldwell fell asleep in Jesus on Sept. 13, 2003, in Columbus, after a short battle with cancer.
She is survived by her husband, Nathan Caldwell; two daughters, Cynthia Goddard of Columbus, and Rhonda Ann Kirtley of Lexington, Ky.; two sons, David Person and Raymond Jones Jr., both of Columbus; niece, Toni Almond of the home, whom she was raising; sister, Ola (Willie) Hector of Malta; brothers, Peyton (Pam) Almond Jr. of Pataskala, Alfred Almond Sr. of Reynoldsburg, and Tony Almond of Gahanna; nine grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
